Rice & Miso Introduce
In the vibrant and diverse food scene of Brooklyn, Rice & Miso stands out as a true culinary gem, offering a unique take on Japanese comfort food. This isn't your typical sushi or ramen spot. Instead, it’s a health-oriented restaurant that specializes in "onigiri," or rice balls made with organic brown rice, and nutritious bento boxes. Founded by a native Japanese entrepreneur and mother, Mika Hatsushima, the restaurant's mission is rooted in a passion for wholesome, pure ingredients and a desire to support the community with healthy and happy eating habits. This focus on quality, authenticity, and nourishment makes Rice & Miso a go-to destination for locals who care about what they eat.
The philosophy behind Rice & Miso is simple but powerful: using mostly organic, non-GMO, and antibiotic/hormone-free ingredients to create meals that are both delicious and well-balanced. The menu incorporates traditional Japanese fermentation techniques to enhance flavor, a nod to time-honored practices that also contribute to a stronger immune system. The result is food that feels good to eat, leaving you feeling energized and satisfied rather than heavy. Despite its small size, the restaurant's atmosphere is casual, cozy, and trendy, making it a perfect spot for a quick, solo meal or a relaxed hangout with friends. It has quickly earned a reputation among locals for delivering on its promise of healthy, high-quality Japanese food.
## Location and Accessibility
Rice & Miso is located at 134 Nevins Street in Brooklyn, NY 11217. Situated in a convenient part of the borough, it is easily accessible for those living and working in the area. While a small space, the restaurant's location is a great option for a quick takeout order or delivery. For those planning to dine in, it’s worth noting that the space is intimate, so having a backup plan to eat at a nearby park or other location might be a good idea, as one reviewer suggested. The restaurant also has another location in Boerum Hill and previously had one in Dumbo, showing its local appeal and growth. The business offers various service options, including dine-in, takeout, and no-contact delivery, catering to the needs of its bustling urban clientele.
## Services and Offerings: A Menu of Healthy Japanese Delights
The menu at Rice & Miso is thoughtfully designed to provide balanced, flavorful, and healthy meals. The star of the show is the onigiri, which is made from organic brown rice and comes with a variety of unique and satisfying fillings. Beyond the rice balls, the bento boxes and a selection of other items provide a complete and nourishing meal.
Here’s a breakdown of the key offerings:
Bento Boxes: The bento boxes are a popular choice, providing a well-rounded meal with a choice of protein and two "osozai" (sides), and two rice balls. The proteins include "Sweet Miso Koji Marinated Salmon," "Grilled Chicken," and "Atsuage Tofu," all prepared with care and high-quality ingredients.
Onigiri (Rice Balls): The specialty of the house, these rice balls are made with organic brown rice and come in a variety of delicious fillings. Popular options include "Tuna Mayo," "Salmon," "Beef," "Original" (scallion miso paste), and "Ume" (sour plum paste). Customers praise the texture of the rice—chewy with a perfect bite—and the subtle yet flavorful seasoning.
Sides and Soups: The menu offers a range of healthy and tasty sides ("osozai") that complement the main dishes, such as "Hijiki," "Daikon Slaw," "Gomaae," and "Edamame." A variety of soups, including a comforting "Miso Soup" and a seasonal "Kenchin Soup," are also available, with the miso soup even winning over people who don't typically like it.
Beverages: In addition to the food, the drink menu is equally focused on quality, featuring a variety of hot and iced teas, lattes, and sparkling Japanese beverages like "Yuzu Sparkling," and "Mikan Sparkling."
Groceries: For those who want to take a piece of Rice & Miso home with them, the restaurant also sells a small selection of curated groceries like "Organic Natto," "Yuzu Kosho," and "Miso Almond Dark Chocolate."
## Features and Highlights: A Local Business with a Big Heart

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Such a gem! I’m vegetarian, so I’m always looking for spots that feel nourishing AND delicious — & Rice & Miso totally delivers. Their scallion miso rice ball is my go-to, the tofu is unreal, & even the miso soup (which I don’t usually love) is starting to win me over 👀You get a full bento + miso soup for around $20, & I always leave feeling so good. Only thing to note is the space is pretty small, so I’d have a backup spot nearby (like the park!) if you’re planning to eat in 🧡
June 08 · Pooja Hanagandithe brown rice ball was chewy with just the right amount of bite! While the seasoning was spot-on—subtle yet flavorful. It was the perfect combination of healthy and delicious. Filling was not too heavy, great for a quick snack.🍣 🍙 salmon and tuna mayo was by far the favebeef and scallion miso was okay.
November 12 · Hailey LCute little place! Hours aren’t always the most convenient, but check them out if you come across them. Fresh and delicious grilled rice balls. Very chic decor. Good quality and reasonable price.
May 02 · Aris S.The bento box portions are fantastic for the price. The quality of the ingredients is perfect, the flavor is on point, and I feel quite joyful having been here. Perfect for a satisfying lunch and quick tea.Note: they only have oat milk for the lattes so if that’s not your speed be aware; however, the iced barley tea is refreshing as is so if you are here during the summer months it’s worth it!!!Love this place, highly recommend
July 06 · Chelsea WinfreeFinally got a chance to get lunch here this afternoon. I got the chicken bento box, which comes in a small takeaway container and has a protein, two rice balls, and two sides. It is deceiving because it is definitely very filling, comes with more chicken than shown in the picture (was under the sides and balls)I was a little worried because some of the reviews said the flavors were lacking, however, as someone who loves overly flavored food, I can say the food delivered! Did not seem under seasoned at all. I got the Ume plum paste and the scallion rice balls, both were delicious and had flavor throughout. The chicken was so delicious, can tell they have it marinating in the sauce for a while. I got the Gomaae and Hijiki for sides, both were great. Overall highly recommend! Cute quaint neighborhood spot!
