Au Jus Introduce
Introduction / Overview
In the vibrant and diverse culinary landscape of New York City, finding a truly authentic and satisfying barbecue experience can feel like a quest. For residents and visitors alike on the Upper West Side, there is one spot that promises a taste of the heartland: Au Jus Barbecue Restaurant. Specializing in what they proudly call Oklahoma-style barbecue and roasted meats, Au Jus brings a distinctive flavor profile to the city's food scene. The French term "Au Jus" literally means "with its own juice," which speaks to the restaurant’s core commitment to tender, flavorful meats, served with rich, natural drippings. They aim to deliver an experience that feels both cozy and authentic, reminiscent of classic barbecue joints.
The restaurant emphasizes slow-cooked excellence, dry-rubbed meats, and a dedicated smoking process—often using hickory wood for up to 14 hours for their signature beef brisket—to achieve deeply flavored, tender results. Their menu extends beyond classic BBQ, featuring items like slow-roasted leg of lamb and their namesake French-inspired, juice-moistened beef. This blend of regional American barbecue tradition and thoughtful preparation is what sets Au Jus apart for many New Yorkers looking for comforting, well-crafted food.
While the general atmosphere is described as casual and cozy, making it a perfect spot for an informal lunch or dinner, customer feedback also highlights the dedication to certain menu items, creating a loyal following for specific dishes. The restaurant caters to various dining needs, establishing itself as a reliable choice for everything from a quick weekday meal to a more leisurely weekend dinner.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I was starving yesterday and decided to get take-out from this place for the first time.Got the "lunch special" of one choice of meat and one side with a drink for $12.50. When I received my order, it was noticeably light, and I really should have checked it before it left, but I was carrying a lot of other things and just wanted to get home and eat.Imagine my disappointment and pure disdain for this joke of a "lunch special" when I got home and saw the two to three ounces of chicken and small container of stuffing I was given.See photo. I mixed the chicken and stuffing together here just to have some semblance of a decent-sized meal. BBQ sauce container included for scale. Chicken was fine and the stuffing was pretty average. Lemonade was very artificial in taste. Need to reiterate the minuscule portions. Will never eat here again. It's pretty telling too that this place is empty most of the time. I probably would never have eaten here if I weren't so hungry. This happened yesterday and I am still mad about it. I spent the same amount at Chiptole and got three times the amount of food, if not more.
August 05 · Andrea LeeI cannot avoid starting by the end: the banana pudding is a winner! Fresh ingredients, scrumptious texture, flavors that meld into a perfect dessert. The sandwiches and burgers are excellent, and the array of sauces, lovely. We tried the chicken bbq and leg of lamb sandwiches, satisfying and well made. Will be back!
June 09 · Maria BarreraI want to love this spot. Bad. Because I live in this hood & the food choices around here are average to poor. This is the second worst BBQ I’ve had in Manhattan. The only thing I’d consider eating again was the corn beef. Maybe their burger.Everything was a miss. Everything is overpriced. Everything was under or not seasoned at all. Everything was flavorless. I haven’t been this disappointed since Trump and Biden won. No cap.Service was good though. They’re really nice. It’s clean. So there’s that.
December 09 · Yür MůmzŶBrisket was kinda flavorless and a bit too hard. The cornbread had corn flour in it? But didn't really taste like anything.Mac and cheese was good, as well as the beans. The place was empty and I understand why.
December 21 · mendel levertovThe real flavors shine in every dish. Everything they serve is fresh and presented with care. Employees show remarkable attention. The cost of dining here is quite reasonable. This spot maintains steady quality.
