When visiting CJ Cafe Utica Ave, the most worthwhile choices are undoubtedly the classics that have earned the restaurant its loyal following. The menu is robust, but certain items are repeatedly highlighted by customers as exceptional and worth braving the typical wait for.
The Oxtail is often cited as a must-try dish. It is a rich, flavorful, and incredibly tender staple of Jamaican cuisine. Pair it with the traditional Rice & Peas—rice cooked with coconut milk and kidney beans—for an authentic and satisfying meal. For those looking for a spicy kick, the Jerk Chicken and Jerk Pork are prepared with a signature spice blend that delivers a genuine taste of the islands. Another fan favorite is the Curry Goat, known for its deep, savory curry flavor and tender meat.
Customers also rave about the side dishes. The Macaroni Salad is consistently mentioned as a delicious companion to any main course, and the option to get the signature oxtail gravy poured over the rice and peas is a highly recommended personalization that enhances the entire meal.
In the bakery department, while the savory patties (Beef Patty, Chicken Patty) are excellent quick bites, the sweet treats are essential. The Red Velvet Cake is noted for its amazing quality, and traditional Caribbean pastries like the Gizzada Pastry (a tart with a spicy-sweet coconut filling) and Rock Cake are perfect for a snack or dessert. The Bun & Cheese Pastry offers a unique Jamaican classic for a slightly sweeter option.
While a few reviews note occasional inconsistencies in food quality or organization—a common challenge for a popular, high-volume establishment—the majority of feedback focuses on the deliciousness, generous portions, and authentic preparation of the Jamaican cuisine. The consensus among satisfied patrons is that the food quality, particularly the meat dishes, is high, and the experience is a valuable taste of Brooklyn’s rich Caribbean culture. Whether you are craving the deeply savory richness of Oxtail, the spicy heat of Jerk Chicken, or a piece of perfectly baked Red Velvet Cake, CJ Cafe Utica Ave offers a piece of New York’s diverse food landscape that is truly worth exploring.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1This place brings me back to my days of high school. Food is always on point. The lines always long. My first dish was the oxtail rice and peas and macaroni salad. It's was so delicious. I ordered that a lot. Then I wanted to try something else, so I tried their curry goat with white rice and macaroni salad. It was pretty good. Also tried the fried chicken with rice and peas oxtail gravy and macaroni salad, and it too was delicious. Their food is always on point. One time, I tried their red velvet cake, and it was amazing. Food 10 out of 10. Wait time 8 out of 10. Customer service 9 out of 10.
January 13 · Angel PI was feeling sick. So i ask my husband to purchase two large soups from this place. I ask for just broth with vegetables and meat(chicken) i didn'twant the ground provisionand dumplins because I'm diabetic. Firstly, there was only one tiny piece of chicken in each soup, (a large soup). And barely any vegetables. The soup itself was disgusting, taste like peppered water. No flavor, no body. The texture was that of chicken stock I will never purchase here again. This is not the first time I've had a bad experience with the quality of food from this place. C&J need to do better. Jamaican food is pricey and the quality is not worth the price from this place.
September 28 · Olivia PeartGAS 10/10 the jerk took me back to runaway bay 🚀😍💜 I was in the area to get my locs done and I found this place and the food brought me straight joy!! The pineapple ginger juice OMG, best I've had it just needs a little rum! I can't wait until my next retwist!
September 06 · Ariel MaloneI placed an online order at CJ Cafe and waited for over an hour, only to be told by the staff that they would not even start preparing my order until all in-person customers were served first. This is completely unacceptable. Online orders should be treated with the same priority and respect as dine-in customers. Very unprofessional service and a terrible experience.
August 22 · Sandro KobaladzeStore is hot and cashier is busy holding conversation instead of taking orders, then you would think after you wait for 20 minutes the food would be good! rice tasted like ginger and had chunks of ginger in it…then the oxtail and mac and cheese taste like it was used from the day before! 0/10!
