Liggett Terrace Food Court Introduce
Introduction / Overview
For New Yorkers seeking a culinary escape that offers variety, atmosphere, and a truly unique setting, the Liggett Terrace Food Court on Governors Island stands out as a must-visit destination. This is not your average indoor mall food court; rather, it is a bustling, open-air hub that functions as the gastronomic heart of Governors Island. It seamlessly blends the casual convenience of a food court with the high-quality, diverse offerings typically associated with New York's elite food truck and pop-up vendor scene. Located centrally on the island, the court serves as a major gathering point, providing visitors with an accumulation of most of the island's food options.
The Liggett Terrace Food Court experience is defined by its vibrant, rotating selection of vendors, which often includes local favorites and specialized culinary concepts. From fixed venues to seasonal food trucks, the variety ensures that every palate—from the pickiest eater to the most adventurous foodie—will find something appealing. It’s a dynamic mix that brings some of the best foods and drinks from across New York City right to the picturesque setting of Governors Island. This combination of culinary diversity and a relaxed, outdoor environment makes it the perfect complement to a day spent exploring the island’s parks, historic sites, and panoramic views of the Manhattan skyline and the Statue of Liberty.
As an outdoor dining area, its busiest season is typically the summer, when the greatest number of food options and seasonal trucks are available, providing a complete gastronomic experience. However, its operation aligns with the island’s increasing push for year-round accessibility, meaning core vendors and services aim to be consistently available. The food court is characterized by its grab-and-go model, encouraging patrons to enjoy their meals picnic-style on the plentiful surrounding green spaces, thus maximizing the idyllic island setting. For local New Yorkers, Liggett Terrace offers a refreshing alternative to typical city dining, providing great food in an open-air oasis just a short ferry ride from the hustle of Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn.
Location and Accessibility
The Liggett Terrace Food Court’s location is one of its biggest draws. It is centrally situated on Governors Island, a 172-acre island in New York Harbor. The official address provided is Liggett Terrace, 517 Clayton Rd, New York, NY 10004, USA, placing it near the gateway between the island's Historic District and its expansive new parklands.
Accessibility is unique and entirely reliant on ferry service, a quintessential New York experience. Governors Island is reachable by ferry daily, year-round, primarily from the Battery Maritime Building at 10 South Street in Lower Manhattan. Seasonal weekend service also typically runs from various Brooklyn locations, and the NYC Ferry system provides additional access points, often along the South Brooklyn route. Once visitors disembark, the food court is just a short, pleasant walk or bike ride away from the ferry landings, making it a convenient stop shortly after arrival or before departure. The island is entirely car-free, enhancing the peaceful, pedestrian-friendly atmosphere. Visitors are encouraged to walk or bring/rent bikes to navigate the island, and the food court is easily found by following the main pathways towards the center of the island.
The Liggett Terrace area itself is strategically positioned minutes from both the Manhattan and Brooklyn ferry landings. This proximity ensures it receives consistent foot traffic, functioning as the island's most traditional food court space, complete with multiple public seating options for both semi-permanent and mobile operations.

Contact Information
As the Liggett Terrace Food Court is a collective of multiple businesses operating under the jurisdiction of Governors Island, its primary point of contact is the physical location on the island itself.
- Address: Liggett Terrace, 517 Clayton Rd, New York, NY 10004, USA (Located on Governors Island)
- Phone: No single, direct phone number is provided for the food court itself, as it is a multi-vendor area. Individual vendor contact information may be available at the respective stands or online.
For operational hours, it is best to consult the official Governors Island website or major search engines for seasonal adjustments, as weekend hours often extend beyond weekday hours, and the vendor lineup frequently changes, especially between peak and off-peak seasons.
What is Worth Choosing
The Liggett Terrace Food Court is absolutely worth choosing because it represents an essential slice of the best of New York City’s culture: world-class food, incredible views, and a relaxed, outdoor atmosphere. For locals looking to escape the concrete jungle without leaving the city, this destination offers an incomparable day trip and dining experience. The sheer variety—from Neapolitan pizza and savory crepes to high-quality seafood and vegan options—guarantees that a family, a group of friends, or a solo visitor can all find a meal that satisfies their specific cravings.
What truly sets it apart is the setting. The act of enjoying a slice of authentic wood-fired pizza or a Cuban sandwich from a local vendor while sitting on a lawn overlooking the Statue of Liberty is a quintessential New York summer moment. You are not just paying for the food; you are investing in a memorable, picturesque dining experience. While prices may reflect the unique, captive environment of the island, the quality of the vendors—many of whom are established names in the NYC food scene—largely justifies the cost, as noted by positive reviews highlighting the great taste and generous portions of items like the teriyaki bowls and mac and cheese.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1The Liggett Terrace Food Court consists of various food trucks and carts, offering a decent array of popular NYC dining options from burgers and fries to Korean fusion to Peruvian hot dogs to teriyaki bowls. I purchased a teriyaki super food bowl with steak (Terry and Yaki, $14) and was pleasantly surprised by both the great taste and portions. The steak was moist and plentiful, and the flavors blended well. For a drink, I got a sparkling coffee float (Joe Coffee, $8) which didn't quite live up to its price, but was refreshing nonetheless. Prices are on par with most NYC food truck prices, but may induce sticker shock in tourists. Credit cards are widely accepted, but if you need cash there's an ATM nearby. There are more food options available on weekends than weekdays, but there are also more crowds on weekends so expect lines. Liggett Terrace has limited seating but there's plenty of green space to picnic throughout Governors Island.
August 30 · Emma Rivera3 stars because the mac and cheese was good. The food is ridiculously over priced. The pita salad was just a bunch of greens stuffed into pita bread like a damn sandwich. It was gross and dry. They could have at least put some chicken in that. I have never had a salad sandwich before and I never will again. I understand that when you go to places like this the prices are going to be up there, but all I ask is that you try to make the food match the price. They did a very lazy job with a salad for crying out loud. No sauce or dressing provided either. They have table service to bring you your food when it's ready but if you need napkins or condiments you have to come back to the cart. That makes no sense.
June 22 · LuzMarie RodriguezI went later in the afternoon so there was no line. You must be patient to get the food you want cooked fresh but its worth it. I went to the Jamaican Food Truck and get a vegan gyro. It was pretty quick considering and my goodness it was sooooo yummy. Highly recommended.
October 15 · T WheelwrightIt's expensive. One spot your bun is bigger than your hot dog and the charge is $3.00 and I don't recall seeing an area for snacks!! If your coming to the Governor's Island to visit, bring your own food and snacks! The drink were reasonable.
February 17 · Kai M.It looks like a good option because of their cute seating area they call a "beer and wine garden" and little hut window, but beware! This place is overpriced and not good.Got their mahi mahi tacos for $15 and got a huge tortilla with some black beans, mango, guac and a tiny piece of tasteless mahi. Everything was cold by the way. The only thing that was decent was the side of salad that was included. It was not much food for $15 and it was not a taco. More like a bunch of things thrown together and I had to use a fork.
