With an extensive menu that honors traditional Greek cooking, deciding what to order can be a delightful challenge. Based on customer favorites and the restaurant’s core offerings, here are some of the dishes most worth choosing for a first-timer or a loyal patron:
For appetizers, the Krya Pikilia (an assortment of traditional Mediterranean spreads served with pita) and the Saganaki (sauteed kefalograviera cheese, often pan-fried with a fiery presentation) are excellent ways to start. Another highly recommended choice is the Spanakopita, a perfectly prepared spinach and feta cheese pastry baked in phyllo dough. Reviews often call it "the best ever had." For seafood lovers, the Oktapodi Scharas (marinated grilled octopus) and Kalamarakia Tiganita (fried calamari) are consistently praised for being tender, flavorful, and incredibly fresh.
The salads are a highlight, particularly the Elliniki Salata, featuring fresh romaine lettuce, stuffed grape leaves, feta cheese, and a medley of olives, tomatoes, cucumbers, and onions. The Horiatiki Salata, a more rustic Greek village salad with tomato, cucumber, onion, and a generous slice of feta, is also a staple.
When it comes to main courses, the Souvlaki Platter (available with marinated pork, chicken, or gyro meat) is a top-liked item, served over rice pilaf with a Greek salad. The Gyro Sandwich is another popular choice for a quick, satisfying bite. For those seeking classic entrees, the menu features dishes like Pastichio and Moussaka (both available in regular or vegetarian versions), ensuring a taste of home-style Greek comfort food. Finally, don't miss the famed Avgolemono Soup, a traditional Greek soup with egg, lemon, rice, and shredded chicken, which is a warm, comforting favorite.
The commitment to authentic flavor, fresh ingredients, and truly hospitable service makes Athena Mediterranean Cuisine a must-visit dining destination in Park Slope. ★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1We showed up 4:45 after seeing a show at The Gallery Players down the street. Admittedly there were 8 of us and we didn’t have a reservation, but we were hungry and ready to eat. The guy who greeted us had an attitude almost immediately, told us we could only eat outside (which was what we wanted in the first place) and then proceeded to chastise us for not making a reservation. Honestly, that one interaction changed the tone of our whole group and no one felt welcomed after that, so we quickly decided that another restaurant in the neighborhood would probably be more welcoming and appreciative of our business.
September 27 · Eric BondAthena Mediterranean Cuisine in Park Slope is an absolute gem. From the moment we walked in, the staff made us feel completely at home—warm, welcoming, and genuinely happy to have us there. The service was above and beyond. Not only was everything served with a smile, but the staff even offered to prepare off-menu dishes just to make sure we were happy—without us even asking! The food was spot on. The octopus was tender and full of flavor, and the fried calamari hit all the right notes—crispy, not greasy, and really fresh. The place itself is spotless and comfortably air-conditioned, which was perfect for escaping the heat outside. One of the nicest touches: the chef personally greets the tables, which just adds to the family-style vibe of the place. And after we paid, he brought over a surprise shot of what he called "Windex"—a bright blue drink made with Curaçao, Greek anise, and who knows what else. Sounds odd, but it was actually delicious, and by then we trusted them with anything.Highly recommend—100%. If you're in the neighborhood, this is the kind of place that makes you want to come back, not just for the food, but for the people too.
May 03 · Nicolas RosselotSo delicious I plan special trips just to eat here. The food maintains standards, portions exceed expectations, and prices make sense. The people at Athena Mediterranean Cuisine are consistently friendly. This spot speaks to those who appreciate good meals. The cost here is justified.
September 20 · Lloyd HolmesAthena, with it's already great name, has the food and the service to match. We had a lovely time and everything was delicious. I cannot recommend this place enough!
August 23 · Rachel VardemanIncredible service! Homey, intimate atmosphere. The food was excellent! Had the Krya Pikilia, Elliniki Salata, and Spanakopita - my husband and I agreed the spanakopita was the best we’ve ever had! Lots of vegetarian options in the menu. We came in just after 8pm on a Tuesday and were in and out in 45 min feeling full and satisfied.
