Great Notch Inn Introduce
The Great Notch Inn is far more than just a bar; it is a legendary New Jersey institution, a true piece of local history, and one of the last standing classic roadhouses in the state. Nestled in Woodland Park, this establishment has captivated generations of patrons with its unique, old-school Jersey charm, a commitment to live music, and a genuinely welcoming atmosphere. For anyone in the Passaic County area, or those traveling along Route 46, the Great Notch Inn represents a beloved community hub where history, music, and camaraderie intersect.
The origins of the Great Notch Inn trace back much further than its current iteration, with a tavern on the site receiving a hotel license as early as 1798, serving as a vital stop for wagon drivers and stagecoach travelers. In its more modern history, the Inn was established in 1939 by the grandfather of the current owner, starting its life during the Prohibition era as a speakeasy known as the "Green Chateau." This colorful past—of secretly serving bootleg booze while outwardly selling milk and bread—is deeply woven into the fabric of the venue, contributing to its authentic and rugged mystique. Today, the wooden interior and rustic feel echo that bygone era, offering a cozy and casual setting that instantly feels like home.
While some may incorrectly stereotype the Great Notch Inn, its patrons are an eclectic mix. The vibrant crowds include local musicians, long-time regulars, Wall Street professionals, and tourists—all united by a shared appreciation for good music and a great vibe. This diversity is a testament to the Inn's enduring appeal and its transition from a local watering hole to a celebrated, all-inclusive live music venue. The friendly owners and bartenders contribute significantly to this community feel, ensuring that every guest feels engaged and welcome, fostering the kind of environment that is increasingly rare in the contemporary bar scene. This place embodies a lively atmosphere without relying on pretense, making it a favorite for those seeking an authentic night out in Northern New Jersey.
The heart of the Great Notch Inn’s reputation lies in its dedication to live music. It operates as a vibrant music venue, hosting performances most nights it is open. This constant stream of local talent, often featuring blues and Jersey rock bands, is what truly sets the Inn apart. The venue is known as a haven for musicians, offering a stage where they can perform and connect directly with an enthusiastic audience. Performances typically start in the early evening, creating an energetic focal point for the night. The dedication to this musical tradition ensures that every visit promises a lively, engaging experience.

August 12 · Ali Reza KhoshkjanHistoric place in NJ! The last standing type “Roadhouse” around! WFMU had a remote broadcast. Two awesome bands rocked the house. Lots of people showed up and had a blast. Glad it’s still standing and hope it will for many more construction projects around it! It’s nice they added a back way to get in and out without going on Rt. 46.
December 07 · PJ KZero stars- Female's watch out! This place is an absolute nightmare. Despite it being disgusting in general. There is something nefarious happening at this place. The owner is some creep who walks around yelling at young women, definitely putting something extra in drinks. I've contacted the appropriate authorities about my experience. Please be safe and extra aware of your surroundings if you go to this place. Do not leave your drinks unattended. Do not trust the bartender's. Just avoid-Literally a house of horrors. Hopefully they will be shut down soon.
