### Features / Highlights
Kandahar Grill’s distinct features lie in its authentic Afghan specialties and its versatile menu structure, although a balanced view requires acknowledging varied customer feedback on execution.
- **Authentic Afghan Specialties (Manto & Bolani):** The most unique highlight is the presence of traditional Afghan appetizers. **Manto** are flavorful, steamed, seasoned-beef dumplings topped with yogurt and a rich chickpea/lentil sauce. **Bolani** are described as crispy, flaky, pan-fried pastries filled with savory leeks or potatoes, served with a creamy sauce. These items offer a genuine taste of Afghanistan.
- **Signature Kabab and Rice Dishes:** The core menu revolves around **KABAB PLATTERS** served with fresh salad, rice, and a choice of three homemade sauces. Favorites include the classic **Chicken Tikka Kabab**, the premium **Lamb Chops**, and the complex flavor of the **Lamb Shank Pulao** (often served with a $3.00 upgrade to the traditional Qabuli Pulao rice).
- **Halal and Health-Conscious Offerings:** The restaurant’s Halal status is a major feature. Additionally, the focus on grilled kababs, fresh salads, and rice (rather than fried food) means the menu is naturally rich in **Healthy options**.
- **Value-Driven Family Platters:** The structured **Family Platters** (feeding 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, or 15) are a phenomenal value highlight, providing a massive assortment of kababs and sides that are lauded by customers for being "more than enough" for a group.
- **Hybrid Menu for Mass Appeal:** To cater to the diverse Long Island market, the menu skillfully includes contemporary favorites like **Shawarmas**, **Gyros**, and a variety of **Sauced-Up Wings** (including Mango Habanero and Nashville Hot flavors), ensuring there is an option for everyone.

### What is Worth Choosing
Kandahar Grill is worth choosing for New York diners primarily for its commitment to **authentic, specialized cuisine** and its function as a **dependable Halal source** on Long Island, provided visitors approach the dine-in experience with awareness.
The **culinary authenticity** is the strongest draw. For those seeking flavors beyond the typical South Asian or Middle Eastern options, Kandahar Grill offers a rare opportunity to explore the refined cuisine of Afghanistan. The recommendation for the **Chicken Kebab** (described as tender and moderately seasoned) and the unique, complex appetizers like **Manto** and **Bolani** are essential menu choices that represent the restaurant at its best. The optional upgrade to **Qabuli Pulao** for rice platters introduces a deeply traditional, festive Afghan rice preparation that is a highlight for true food enthusiasts.
Furthermore, the **Halal designation** and the incredible **value of the Family Platters** make it an outstanding choice for large families and groups. Patrons seeking a guaranteed high volume of food for a fair price will find the Family Platter options to be an extremely economical and satisfying solution for feeding a crowd.
A note for local users: Be aware that the restaurant has received mixed reviews concerning dine-in service and a mandatory **18% service charge** for small tables. While some patrons felt the "hospitality deserve it," others found the service slow and inattentive given the automatic charge. The most prudent approach is to visit for the highly recommended items, especially the kababs and unique appetizers, and inquire about the gratuity policy upon being seated. Ultimately, for the specific, delicious flavors of Afghanistan and the convenience of a Halal kitchen on Long Island, Kandahar Grill offers a culturally rich and worthwhile culinary experience.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Kandahar Grill is a great halal spot in Hicksville! We ordered the family platter, and the serving was more than enough for all of us. The food was delicious, and the staff were very nice and helpful throughout our visit. If you’re dining in, they automatically add an 18% tip to the total—but honestly, the service and hospitality deserve it. Definitely worth a visit for generous portions and friendly service.
August 29 · Aleli NaAfter repeatedly seeing Kandahar Grill featured across Instagram with glowing praise and beautifully staged food photos, I felt compelled to visit and experience it for myself. Unfortunately, my visit with my wife (and our toddler, who did not eat) left me thoroughly underwhelmed.Atmosphere & Wait Time:Upon entering, we noticed only a single family waiting for their food — not exactly a bustling dining scene. Despite the calm setting, it took 35 minutes for our food to arrive after ordering, which felt unnecessarily excessive given the low foot traffic. The ambiance was plain, and nothing about the environment enhanced the dining experience.Food Presentation vs. Flavor:Visually, the dishes earned a respectable 4 out of 5 — they were plated nicely and initially gave us hope for a flavorful experience. However, the flavor profile was deeply lacking. The food was bland and uninspired, as though the kitchen skipped over seasoning altogether. It filled our stomachs, but it left our palates completely unsatisfied.• The chicken kebab was the lone highlight — tender, moderately seasoned, and the only item that stood out.• The rice was passable, but far from memorable.• Every other dish was shockingly flavorless, with a flat, one-dimensional taste that made it hard to distinguish between items.Service & Automatic Charges:To make matters worse, an automatic 18% service charge was tacked onto our bill. This would be understandable for large groups — but it was just two adults and a toddler who didn’t eat. When asked, the staff gave no justification for this charge. And for a restaurant forcing a mandatory gratuity, the service was abysmal — inattentive, slow, and devoid of warmth or hospitality. We were essentially ignored throughout the meal, with no check-ins, no water refills, and no follow-up on our satisfaction.Final Verdict:Kandahar Grill is a classic example of style over substance — heavily promoted on social media, but failing to deliver on even the basics of good food and service. It’s a place where presentation masks mediocrity, and hospitality seems to be an afterthought. There are countless other eateries on Long Island that offer richer flavors, more honest service, and better value for money. Unless significant improvements are made, I wouldn’t consider returning.Overall Rating: 2.5 out of 5Only Recommendation: Chicken Kebab
June 16 · Good CitizenI visited Kandahar Grill on Long Island the other day, and I’m still thinking about the food. This Afghan halal spot is such a gem.The chicken shawarmas were so juicy and flavorful — perfectly seasoned and wrapped just right. Every bite had that smoky, grilled flavor I love. And the lamb shank with rice? Easily one of the most tender dishes I’ve ever had. The meat literally fell off the bone, and the rice was packed with flavor. You can tell everything is made fresh and with care. The staff were super friendly and made me feel right at home. It had that comforting, welcoming vibe — like a hidden spot you’re glad you discovered. If you’re into Afghan food or just want to try something new and halal, Kandahar Grill is 100% worth checking out. I’ll definitely be back soon.
June 30 · Pierre ReviewsRestaurant Review: Kandahar Grill – Long IslandI recently visited Kandahar Grill on Long Island after seeing a lot of hype about it on Instagram. The posts made it seem like a must-try Afghan/Persian-style restaurant, so I decided to check it out with my wife and our 3-year-old.Ambiance & Wait Time:When we walked in, there was only one family waiting for their food. We placed our order and waited approximately 35 minutes before our food arrived. For a restaurant that wasn’t too busy, that wait time was longer than expected.Food Presentation & Taste:When the food arrived, I have to say it looked great – a solid 4 out of 5 for presentation. However, once we started eating, we were pretty disappointed. The flavor just wasn’t there. The food filled us up, but it didn’t satisfy. It lacked seasoning and depth.• Chicken kebab was the one standout item – tender and fairly well-seasoned.• Rice was okay, nothing special.• Everything else was flavorless, bland, and underwhelming given how much the restaurant was hyped online.Service & Hidden Charges:Here’s where things got more frustrating. Despite being just my wife and me (our 3-year-old didn’t eat), the restaurant still charged us an automatic 18% service charge, which is supposedly for parties of two or more. That might be acceptable if the service was excellent, but it was far from it. We didn’t receive any notable attention or courtesy, and the service was quite slow and inattentive.Final Thoughts:Kandahar Grill might look good on social media, but the reality didn’t live up to the hype. The atmosphere was okay, the presentation of the food was decent, but the taste and service left much to be desired.Would I return? Probably not. There are plenty of other places on Long Island that offer better flavor, more transparent pricing, and stronger customer service.Overall Rating: 2.5 out of 5Recommended Dish: Chicken Kebab (only)
June 16 · Mahade HassanSaw Kandahar Grill from Devour Power on TikTok as they rated this restaurant pretty highly, so thought I’d check it out.The Mantu was really flavorful, especially with the addition of the daal (lentils) that brought out the diversity in flavors. The Bolani was also good, but wished there was an even balance between the crispness of the flatbread and the potato filling. The chicken kofta was probably the better of the assortment of meat we got in the mixed grill platter, very tender and flavorful! The beef kofta was a little bit dry, wished it was more tender and seasoned. The chicken tikka was also really tender, but not as flavorful as the chicken kofta. The lamb tikka was seasoned well, but was a little dry. The bed of and vegetables were really delicious, recommend it with white sauce. As for the sauces, the hot and green sauces were really watery, wished it was more viscous.Overall, impressed with what I had and it was good food nonetheless.
