Patent Pending Introduce
New York City's bar scene is a world unto itself, but even in a city full of options, some places stand out for their creativity and unique character. Patent Pending is one such establishment, a true hidden gem that offers an experience unlike any other. It’s a speakeasy-style cocktail bar that perfectly blends historical charm with modern, inventive mixology. The name and theme are a tribute to the building's history, which was once the location of a patent office where the legendary inventor Nikola Tesla conducted his work. This unique backstory infuses the bar with a sense of wonder and intellectual curiosity that’s reflected in every detail, from the decor to the cocktail menu.
The atmosphere is what makes Patent Pending so special. Tucked away behind a seemingly ordinary coffee shop, the entrance feels like a secret, a discovery you get to make for yourself. Once inside, you’re greeted by a dark, cozy, and romantic space that’s perfect for intimate conversations and special occasions. It’s the kind of place you take a date to impress them or visit with a close friend for a memorable, high-quality drink. While it's a popular spot and can get busy, the intimate setting ensures it never feels overcrowded or overwhelming. Patent Pending is a must-visit for anyone looking for a bar with a story and cocktails that are works of art.
Finding Patent Pending is part of the adventure. It's located at 49 W 27th St, New York, NY 10001, right in the heart of the NoMad neighborhood. The entrance is cleverly disguised, hidden behind a coffee shop, which adds to the allure of its speakeasy vibe. While it may take a moment to find the discreet entrance, the journey is well worth it. Once you step inside, you leave the bustling streets of Manhattan behind and enter a world of sophisticated calm.
The location is easily accessible by public transportation, with numerous subway lines and bus routes serving the area. For those who choose to drive, paid street parking is available, though as with any part of Manhattan, it’s often easiest to rely on public transit or rideshare services. Given the bar's popularity and intimate size, it’s worth noting that there can sometimes be a wait, so planning ahead or making a reservation is a good idea to ensure a spot.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Loved this spot! It’s hidden behind a coffee shop and feels like a secret—dark, cozy, and perfect for date night. The drinks were super creative and seriously good. There’s a cool vibe with a nod to Nikola Tesla, who actually lived in the building. The bar was quite empty when we reached, but filled up pretty quickly. Definitely a must-go bar in the City!
May 09 · Madhumita SawantWhat a hidden gem! The cocktails at Patent Pending are truly spectacular. I especially loved the “Light Me Up” — a bourbon sour-style drink with a sweet peppercorn rim that was absolute perfection. The “Currents & Coils” was another standout — a tropical delight. Can’t wait to return!
July 11 · Stephanie MThis is one of the few bars in NYC you take to impress someone. Patent Pending is an awesome speakeasy bar serving very creative cocktails in a dimly lit discreet setting behind a cafe. The experience is like no other bar in NYC where the service goes above and beyond and the drinks are carefully crafted for taste and visual appeal. Prices are higher than your usual speakeasy and a lot more than your casual bar but expect to pay for quality and the unique and memorable experience this bar delivers. During the holiday and summer season, expect wait times to be seated, as the bar is quite small so arrive a few minutes before opening time. I definitely recommend you visit if you're passionate about mixology or interested in immersing yourself in the fine NYC nightlife.
March 28 · Billy RodriguezPatent Pending is an intimate and vibrant speakeasy located in Nikolas Tesla's previous living quarters. The Radio Wave Building is also where he experimented on.... you guessed it. Radio Waves.Creative and unique cocktail offerings. We enjoyed "Into the Realm" and "Radio Wave".Pricey. Not really worth the $32 each price tag!
April 13 · Virginia HuffmanIf you go a little early (before 7pm) there’s no wait to get in. There’s a separate back bar around the corner that I didn’t know of, so quite a few people can be seated actually. Drinks live up to the reputation; all great blends of liquor in the way they should be, not a mix of syrup.
