Salam, a Middle Eastern restaurant nestled in the heart of the West Village, offers just that. More than just a place to eat, Salam provides a cozy escape from the city's hustle and bustle, with a warm, "ottoman-style interior" that feels less like a commercial eatery and more like a cherished, family-run home kitchen. The name "Salam" itself translates to "peace," and this is an atmosphere the restaurant lives up to, creating a serene and welcoming environment for all who enter.
Salam’s menu is a testament to the rich and diverse flavors of Middle Eastern cuisine, particularly with Syrian and Lebanese influences. It's a place where you can find everything from classic favorites like creamy Hommos and flavorful Tabbuli to more unique and complex dishes like their signature Ouzi and a variety of curries and tagines. The focus is on comfort food and healthy options, with a wide range of vegetarian choices available, making it an excellent destination for a variety of palates and dietary needs. The restaurant is popular for both lunch and dinner, and is an ideal spot for solo dining or for intimate gatherings with groups. With its consistent fast service and the incredible longevity of its staff, Salam has cultivated a loyal following of patrons who return time and again for the food, the ambiance, and the sense of genuine hospitality.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Great Syrian food with cozy ottoman style interior. The pita was super fresh and good that we all ate one without the food and appetizers! The vegetable curry had a unique taste with a nice ginger kick and lots of veggies. The couscous was also great with flavorful gravy. The staff worked there for 28 years which was incredible!
June 29 · Mandy KuoThis is a seriously cute and delicious restaurant. Had the Maza for 2, 1 order of their lentil soup, and their homemade pomegranate ice tea - all of which was definitely enough food and had great variety. Sat in a beautiful area that transported me out of NYC. It really does feel like you are in someone's cozy apartment-turned-restaurant and someone is cooking in their home kitchen.. Waitress checked in a few times, but wasn't very warm. I think the food and ambience of this place still make it deserve 5 stars! Can't wait to bring a friend here.
August 15 · Celine LaheurteWhere to start, an amazing gem! We started with Egyptian beans, and then the chicken ouzi and the chicken kebab with roasted potatoes. The cumin in the beans was delicate and yet the dish evoked far away places in the east. The burst of sultanas in ouzi gave a slight sweetness that was a very special experience. The place was a little dusty and the decor had eccentricity, All up, a delightful evening with light, relaxing jazz music providing a gentle, inviting atmosphere. We'll be going back!!
May 30 · NirmaliExotically decorated townhouse ground floor with Moroccan wall hangings, cushions, cozy booths with low banquettes. Great visual style that the supposedly Mideastern food doesn't keep up with. Hummus had no garlic or lemon bite. We tried a good salmon curry, a large filet with a curried cream sauce. (curry, really?) The Salmon couscous (hoping for a tagine) was another fish filet with some plain couscous and steamed veggies on the side. The Lamb Kofte was a ground lamb patty with some rice and a few plain steamed veggies, but none of the dishes had the pizzazz or ethnic spice we were hoping for. No condiments to add either. So it has great ambience for a party but just so-so continental cuisine. Still, Salam is well priced for NYC, attractive and serves relatively large portions. Could not give it a 5 but a 4 will do for the right customer.
December 16 · Kyle McCarthyAccidentally stumbled into this place when I was craving curry. Such a delight! Hidden gem! Nearly walked past it, thinking it was just a house but once you walk inside it is so intricately decorated. Very pretty. The food was so good with fresh naan and tasty sauce. I thought the portion looked small but it was actually very filling! Perfect serving! I tried a few drinks and they were refreshing and strong.
