Takahachi Introduce
For more than three decades, Takahachi has been an unwavering staple in New York City's East Village, earning its reputation as a go-to spot for high-quality, authentic, and reasonably priced Japanese cuisine. This is not a trendy, high-concept omakase counter; it's a true neighborhood gem, the kind of place you can visit on a Tuesday night for a reliable and satisfying meal. The atmosphere is casual, cozy, and often bustling with a mix of regulars, college students, and families. It’s a place that feels like a piece of the neighborhood's history, a "home away from home" for many who live in the area. Chef Jack Hlaing, who has been with the restaurant for many years, is a key reason for its longevity and success, with customers praising his dedication to quality and his friendly demeanor. He and his team are known for creating a welcoming environment that makes every guest feel like a regular.
What sets Takahachi apart is its commitment to fresh ingredients and classic Japanese dishes. While the sushi is a major draw, the menu also offers a wide array of cooked items, from appetizers to noodle soups and teriyaki dinner sets. This variety ensures there is something for everyone, whether you're a sushi connoisseur or a fan of Japanese home-style cooking. The restaurant's appeal is also its unpretentious nature. While the food is well-crafted and fresh, the prices remain approachable, a rarity in a city where good sushi can often come with a triple-digit price tag. This balance of quality, value, and a genuinely warm atmosphere is what keeps the tables full and the community coming back time and time again.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I don’t think I’ve had such beautiful take out *ever* before. Photo of the skateboarder roll and the lobster roll. I enjoyed them both but probably the lobster roll the best - I just really love the presentation. I was so pleasantly surprised when I opened my to-go box! Well done, very well done ❤️I stumbled upon this restaurant looking for a different sushi place and since it was almost packed, decided there must be something good going on inside. I had a tough time deciding which of their special rolls to get - both of these are part of the regular menu. I will DEFINITELY return for sushi (and had a little sake too) the atmosphere was great, good food, full of neighborhood friends and solo diners. All around a great sushi experience 🍣❤️
July 31 · Solange HansenWe appreciated Chef Jack’s friendliness and enthusiasm. He genuinely cares about every detail, from the freshness of the Faroe Island salmon to the quality of the rice imported from Japan. This is a cozy restaurant with great service and delicious food. We will be back!
April 12 · Starla SampacoA coworker of mine recommended this place and I’m very sensitive to sushi since getting food poisoning at another restaurant about a year ago. The food here tasted fresh, I sat at the bar and saw where they made the sushi. I had the sushi for two and it was a lot of food plus some lovely miso soup. The green tea tempura ice cream was spectacular.I think the tables, counters, and glasses could have been a bit cleaner, but that just might be my hypersensitive reaction to sushi
February 14 · Steve ThomasSolid Japanese food. Good rolls, good karaage. Very casual spot and the pricing is very fair for EV!
August 20 · Michellethe perfect neighborhood sushi place. well priced, good service, cute interior. definitely will be coming back!!
