What is Worth Choosing
Surya’s extensive and tempting menu offers a remarkable culinary exploration, making the choice of what to order a delightful challenge. The restaurant is widely recognized for its incredible value and the authentic quality of its preparations. Based on customer favorites and the unique offerings, there are a few categories that should top your list.
The Chats and Snacks selection is the perfect entry point into Indian street food. Customers flock here for the traditional, savory, and spicy items like the Samosa Chat ($10.00), Pani Puri ($10.00), and the crunchy Bhel Puri ($10.00). The Aloo Tikki Chaat ($10.00) and the classic Samosa ($2.00) are quick bites that are highly recommended. These small plates are not only affordable but are packed with the complex layers of flavor that Indian street food is famous for.
Don't skip the South Indian Specials, which include a variety of expertly prepared Dosas and Uttapams. The Masala Special Dosa ($11.00) is a staple, but for those seeking something unique, the Mysore Special Dosa ($12.00) or the signature Surya Special Dosa ($13.00) offer a unique and flavorful experience. The Onion Uttapam Special ($11.00) and Mix Veg Uttapam ($12.00) are excellent, fluffy pancake alternatives.
For a truly satisfying, hearty meal, dive into Surya's Specialty section. The Choley Bhaturey Specialty ($11.00) and the Surya's Special Choley ($14.00) are classic, comforting North Indian dishes that showcase the restaurant’s strong suit in rich, well-spiced gravy and fluffy bread. Those who prefer stuffed bread should try the Amritsari Kulcha Specialty ($11.00) or one of the various Parathas (starting at $6.00 for Aloo or Gobi). These specialties are the definition of comfort food that keeps locals coming back.
Finally, no trip to Surya is complete without indulging in their sweets. As noted by customers, they have the best Indian sweets in the area. This highlight is a testament to the quality and tradition they uphold. Pair your sweet treat with a refreshing Mango Lassi ($5.00) or a cup of their celebrated Masala Tea ($2.50).
While the experience is generally overwhelmingly positive, a customer review did mention a concern regarding an order of burnt Parathas and the suggested resolution. It is important for potential patrons to note that while the place is generally highly rated for its amazing food and reasonable prices—as one review called it “one of the best Indian food place in the area”—the staff can be very busy, which can sometimes impact consistency or immediate issue resolution. The self-serve nature and high volume of customers are part of the value-focused model, but the consistent praise for the food quality, especially the vegetarian options and the sweets, solidifies Surya as a reliable choice for authentic and affordable Indian dining in New York. The sheer diversity from Paneer Subzis to Garlic Nan ensures there's something wonderful for every palate.

The place is not very fancy but the food is absolutely amazing, it’s a self serve restaurant and the prices are very reasonable in today’s day and age! They have plenty of menu options and everything is vegetarian! They have the best Indian sweets! They don’t have outdoor seating few indoor seating, the place is very busy, but they try to move as fast as they can! I am very satisfied and highly recommended this place!

August 10 · Jessica SinghQuality and service is extremely poor!I bought a full large trays of samosas, kachoris, 12 pounds Sweets . All items were horrible in taste. The cooking oil that they use is terrible and old you can taste and smell once you eat the food. The sweets were not fresh all hard stale .I called the owner to inform him of my experience and he didn’t acknowledge my concerns instead kept on defending his poor quality products! Terrible customer service, poor management!I would never go back or recommend Surya to anyone! Don’t waste your money and ruin your health by eating at Surya Restaurant. This complaint is going to the Better Business Bureau.
