Aigner Chocolates Introduce
When New Yorkers are searching for a taste of tradition, craftsmanship, and community spirit all rolled into one delectable treat, a trip to Forest Hills, Queens, often leads to one legendary spot: Aigner Chocolates. A true neighborhood staple, this beloved business is much more than just a place to satisfy your sweet tooth; it's a piece of New York City history and a vibrant, modern small business that continues to pour heart and soul into every confection.
For over 90 years, Aigner Chocolates has been crafting artisanal sweets right here in Queens. Originally established as Krause's Candy Kitchen in 1930, the business was taken over by the Aigner family in the 1960s, who preserved its legacy of quality for three generations. Today, under the ownership of Rachel Kellner and Mark Libertini, the shop honors its deep roots, using antique equipment and time-honored recipes, while bringing a fresh, community-focused vision to the Metropolitan Avenue storefront. This blend of traditional techniques with a contemporary commitment to excellence is what makes Aigner Chocolates a standout destination for locals and visitors alike.
As a proud, certified women-owned small business, Aigner Chocolates exemplifies the entrepreneurial spirit that fuels New York City's diverse local economy. The current ownership, led by Rachel Kellner—a former licensed clinical social worker—has embedded a mission of spreading joy and hope through chocolate, viewing their products not just as treats but as a source of community connection. This commitment extends beyond the counter, with the business actively supporting local organizations, schools, and nonprofits, truly making it a cornerstone of the Forest Hills neighborhood. Whether you’re looking for a special gift, a daily indulgence, or simply to support a business with deep local ties, Aigner Chocolates offers a wonderfully warm and professional experience.
The selection here is impressive, featuring everything from classic, old-world Austrian/German confections to more contemporary chocolate-covered delights. Chocolate lovers can find a full spectrum of options, including 60% and 76% extra dark chocolate, milk chocolate, and white chocolate selections. The classic assortment boxes, which include a variety of the shop's most popular showcase pieces like caramels, marzipan, truffles, clusters, nonpareils, jellies, and creams, are consistently among the top-selling items and make for a perfect New York City gift. From simple chocolate bars to elaborate, seasonal foil-wrapped novelties, the artistry and quality of the handmade pieces are evident.
Beyond the vast array of exquisite chocolates, Aigner Chocolates is a true all-in-one destination for dessert and refreshment. It functions as a complete sweet shop, coffee house, and ice cream parlor, all under one roof. This expanded offering makes it a perfect stop for a quick dessert visit, a coffee break, or an extended hang-out with friends or family. It's a place where you can easily find something for everyone, regardless of the time of day or the season.
The atmosphere itself is often described as warm and welcoming, providing a charming and comfortable setting for customers to browse the tempting displays. Despite an isolated negative customer review regarding a service interaction near closing time—which the owners and community seem dedicated to preventing from overshadowing the shop’s long-standing reputation as a loving local business—the overwhelming sentiment from the neighborhood is one of loyalty and appreciation for the friendly staff and hands-on, amazing owner.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1So disappointing. I have lived here in the neighborhood for over a decade and gone here throughout the years. I have never received service like this. I understand that I entered 10 minutes before closing time but that really is not an excuse for damaging the reputation of a forest hills and queens staple. We were immediately met by a rude employee who told us they were closing, she also promptly let us know they could not make us drinks because they needed to start cleaning the machine. OK, although I have been in the service industry in NYC for 10+ years, I understand it can be frustrating to make drinks at the end of the shift. She again told us that they are closing in a few minutes. We asked about the price of the chocolates with rum and she told us "if you can read, the price is on top".She told us then that we can keep looking but that they were going to lock the door behind us. We asked to pay as quickly as possible. As the door was closing behind us we could feel the grate lowering on the storefront. This coupled with the audacity of the standardized tip menu was an outrage. I hope this woman does not work here long enough to tarnish or cause bad association with this loving small business. I will try to push this out of my mind and focus on good memories when kids trick or treat, go for some sweets after school or Aigner participates in Community Day.
March 14 · Rosemarie AmeliaAbsolutely love this place. Outside of them having an amazing selection of chocolate they also have coffee and ice cream. Their Iced mocha lattes are so delicious I am addicted to them. The staff is wonderful, and the owner is amazing and hands on. They even have a bulk chocolate selection for those of you who like to create your own treats. If you haven’t been here you definitely must try.
July 23 · Jennifer DI had an incredible experience at Aigner Chocolates. From the moment we walked in, the front desk lady warmly greeted us and took the time to explain the history of the store. She even offered us a free sample, which was a pleasant surprise. I’ve never received such exceptional customer service in New York City—it was so genuine and kind that I actually turned to my friend and said, “She must not be from New York!”The chocolates themselves were absolutely amazing—rich, smooth, and clearly made with care. This place is a hidden gem, and I’ll definitely be coming back. It's rare to find both outstanding products and service under one roof. Highly recommend
May 27 · Jaskomal PhagooraIf you're a chocolate lover in Queens, Aigner Chocolates is a must-visit. Nestled in the heart of Forest Hills, this charming shop is a delight from the moment you walk in. Their assorted dark chocolate is rich, smooth, and deeply satisfying—every piece feels like a small celebration. The chocolate box selection is equally impressive, perfect for gifts… or just treating yourself (no judgment). The staff is incredibly friendly, and it's clear they love what they do. Even the manager is out on the floor, welcoming customers and making sure everyone feels right at home. It’s that kind of warm, personal touch that makes this place stand out.Aigner is more than just a chocolate shop—it's a delicious addition to the neighborhood, and one you’ll find yourself returning to again and again.
May 13 · M Ortiz (Epicurean Explorer Rater)Someone wrote " It's great to shop here on special occasions.' I had to chuckle because the chocoholic that I am thought "Chocolate a day keeps the therapist away." Every bite makes you smile. I'm a frequent customer of Aigner and I love their chocolates. No relation, but I wish I was! Maybe I would get a discount. You're welcome for the chuckle! But seriously, they make the best chocolate. Possibly in the entire world! Blessings on your business Aigner Chocolates.
