What is Worth Choosing
For the local New York user, choosing **Barra Payan** is primarily about embracing a culinary institution known globally for two exceptional things: the **Sandwiches** and the **Natural Juices**. Unlike many other dining options in Upper Manhattan, this establishment provides a genuine and time-tested Dominican experience. The sheer variety and quality of the sandwiches, particularly those built around tender **Pierna (Pork)** and multiple types of melted cheese, deliver a rich, comforting experience that is hard to replicate. When ordered, they arrive hot-pressed and satisfyingly greasy, the epitome of high-quality street food.
Equally important is the impressive smoothie and juice program. In a city where fresh, authentic fruit drinks can be hit or miss, the **Jugos Naturales/Batidas** at Barra Payan—featuring exotic, authentic options like **Guanabana**, **Chinola**, and **Zapote**—provide a vital and delicious counterpoint to the savory food. These beverages are an essential part of the Dominican experience and a true highlight of the restaurant. Whether you opt for a frothy batida or a simple fruit juice, this is a must-try feature.
While the experience is very much a **Casual** and high-energy environment, which includes the typical New York hustle and bustle of its Washington Heights location, this is part of its charm. Despite isolated negative reviews focusing on specific food quality issues—which any high-volume restaurant can face—the overwhelming reputation and decades of tradition for items like the **Pica Pollo** and the **Payan Club** make this a definitive choice for authentic, convenient, and flavorful Dominican **Comfort food** in the **New York region of United States**. It is a reliable spot for a hearty **Breakfast**, a satisfying **Lunch**, or a quick, late-day **Small plate** pick-me-up.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I stopped by this latest addition to the strip of newer businesses going up around St. Nicholas Avenue, just to see what was available inside and why? For one, it has a very good straightforward menu catering to a very popular Dominican style fried chicken which for this part of Washington Heights is completely complementary. Of course who doesn’t love fried chicken! The restaurant itself, is located on an extremely busy intersection nestled on a corner between the towering high-rise apartment buildings overlooking the George Washington freeway to and from New Jersey. However the traffic and drive-in lined lanes never ceases here. Weekends are increasingly popular especially with drivers constantly laying on their horns blaring whenever double-parked at all hours of the day and all night long [relentlessly] for whatever reason they do it ... so odd nonetheless. Since it seems pretty lame for foreign born locals with cars up the block to drive up the noise-making pollution while double-parking their cars. Yet never fails to impress us with those innocuous blares aimlessly to the other general Hispanic residents who do patronize this place for faster food service along with the long wait times (seen oftentimes from being parked inside their vehicles outside on the street), also parked waiting for food to arrive from someone with them. Hungry for fried chicken! Strange and just weird!Nevertheless the locals generally always love crowded places like this, but then again, no liquor served or anything more delightful than what’s served. Just another local fast food chicken joint, not much else. Primarily for anyone working round-the-clock for that after-work pick me up temptation. Very convenient and easy!
May 24 · Sir Bernard Mendes FranceLast night 9/13/25 I bought a club chicken sandwich , and 2 piece of chicken and tostones . I would never come back there, the chicken club sandwich was nasty . The color of the chicken black and the taste was nasty . I spend 22 dollars for the garbage I keep it to take the picture . I think they seasoned the chicken with soy sauce . Nasty never comback to this place. I want clarify the address it was at 207 street .
September 14 · aleida lopezMaybe for locals, Barra Payan is just another spot. But for us, visiting from out of state, it was a true Dominican community experience on St. Nicholas Ave. We tried “pica pollo” for the first time, and it was honestly some of the best fried chicken we’ve had in a long time—super flavorful and perfectly cooked. The service was friendly and fast, and the food came out hot. The place isn’t the cleanest, and there’s no restroom to wash your hands before eating. Also, the fries were a bit too greasy. Still, the overall flavor made it worth the visit, and we’d come back for more next time we’re in New York.
May 18 · Heysel RequenaThe Name is confused. I pass by to get a picapollo but the name said Barra Payan. For those like me looking for fast food and authentic Dominican flavors this place brings the essence of Dominican cuisine to the heart of The Heights, offering a menu that delights both locals and visitors. The food was nice, the pollo was crispy, the waiting time was ok.
March 12 · Svalen FajasI was very disappointed with the customer service. This tostada looked nothing like the Payan I used to enjoy in the Dominican Republic. The bread was cold, and the cheese wasn’t even melted.
