Filthy Flats Introduce
Introduction / Overview
In the heart of Astoria, a vibrant and dynamic neighborhood in Queens, a unique culinary concept has arrived to reinvent the New York sandwich scene. Filthy Flats, located prominently on 30th Avenue, is not just another sandwich shop; it's the home of the signature ‘Flat’—a truly innovative take on a classic meal. Moving beyond the traditional two-slice bread construction, Filthy Flats presents an open-faced sandwich served on a specially crafted, flattened bagel. This inventive approach has quickly made the establishment a favorite among New Yorkers seeking quick, high-quality, and extraordinarily flavorful food options that cater to the fast pace of city life, from a fulfilling morning bite to a satisfying dinner.
The core philosophy behind Filthy Flats, encapsulated in its motto "All Day, the Filthy Way!", revolves around providing a memorable meal experience that is both affordable and endlessly customizable. The 'flat' concept allows for an impressive variety of toppings and flavor combinations, making it an ideal choice for the adventurous eater or anyone in a rush who demands value without sacrificing taste. Whether you're craving a robust breakfast to fuel your commute, a globally-inspired lunch, a pizza-style snack, or even a decadent dessert, Filthy Flats offers its unique 'flat' for every part of the day. The commitment to fresh, quality ingredients paired with a family-recipe flatbread ensures that this Astoria spot delivers a standout experience in a crowded NYC market, distinguishing itself with its creativity and value proposition. It’s a welcome and much-appreciated addition to the local culinary landscape, celebrated by neighborhood patrons who appreciate its fresh perspective on an everyday staple.
Location and Accessibility
Filthy Flats is perfectly situated at a highly accessible location in one of Queens' most desirable neighborhoods, making it a convenient stop for locals and those passing through. The shop is found at 31-01 30th Ave., placing it directly in the center of Astoria’s bustling commercial and residential hub. This part of 30th Avenue is renowned for its eclectic mix of shops, cafes, and eateries, creating a lively atmosphere that reflects the true energy of New York City.
For those relying on public transit, the location is exceptionally convenient. Filthy Flats is positioned just a very short walk from the N/W subway line's 30th Avenue station. This proximity to a major transit link ensures that getting to the shop is simple for commuters traveling from Manhattan or other parts of Queens. While the 30th Avenue station offers easy access via stairs, prospective customers should note that this particular subway stop, typical of many older New York stations, is not ADA-accessible with elevators. However, for the vast majority of foot traffic from the train, it’s a matter of minutes from platform to flat sandwich. The central location also makes it an easy pit stop for drivers, although street parking, as with any dense NYC area, can be competitive. Beyond the convenience of location, the comprehensive service options—including delivery and takeout—further extend accessibility to those within the wider Astoria and surrounding New York City area, ensuring that a craving for a unique 'Flat' is never too far from being satisfied.

Features / Highlights
The true appeal of Filthy Flats lies in the creativity and quality woven into its unique open-faced sandwich concept. These features are what make the shop a true standout in the competitive New York food scene, appealing directly to discerning local tastes.
- The Signature 'Flat' Concept: The centerpiece of the menu is the flat—an open-faced sandwich served on a unique, flattened bagel. This is a family recipe, with the dough hand-rolled, boiled, and then flattened before baking. This process results in a crispy, delicious bread foundation that is truly the star of the show and a novel twist on the traditional bagel or sandwich bread, setting it apart from any other sandwich shop in the city.
- Incredible Affordability and Value: The shop is widely noted for offering exceptional value, particularly for New York City. Customers rave about the affordability, noting that a filling meal of two ‘single’ flats can be purchased for a price point that is significantly lower than comparable specialty or gluten-free items at nearby establishments, providing significant budget relief for the everyday consumer.
- Inclusive Gluten-Free Options: Addressing a major dietary need, Filthy Flats offers savory options on a dedicated gluten-free cauliflower flatbread. This is a major win for customers with gluten sensitivities, allowing them to fully partake in the 'Flat' experience without compromising on flavor or the unique structure of the meal.
- Extensive Mix-and-Match Customization: The single 'Flat' serving size and diverse menu categories (Breakfast, Signature, Pizza, Dessert) encourages a highly customizable experience. Patrons can easily mix and match different flavors for one meal, such as pairing a savory Korean BBQ Flat with a classic Buffalo Chicken Flat, or finishing with a Dessert Flat like the Naughty S'more or The Cannoli. This feature maximizes variety and choice.
- Diverse and Global Flavor Profiles: The Signature Flats menu is not limited to deli classics. It features ambitious and bold options like the savory Korean BBQ Short Rib, the satisfying Filthy Cheesesteak, the crave-able Buffalo Chicken, and the classic Cubano, ensuring there is a flat to satisfy nearly any culinary preference, from comfort food to global fusion.
- All-Day Menu for Every Craving: From the morning rush to a late-night dessert, the menu is available all day. Patrons can indulge in the full range of options at any time, including specialty Dessert Flats served on a rainbow bagel base, offering Strawberry Cheesecake, The Cannoli, and Naughty S’more flavors.
- Sides and Accoutrements: Beyond the flats, the menu includes popular comfort sides, such as Filthy Tots, available plain or loaded with cheese and bacon, adding another layer of indulgent options to the order.

What is Worth Choosing
For a first-time visitor or a seasoned local looking for a surefire winner, the true appeal of Filthy Flats comes down to two key areas: the innovative format and the exceptional value. It is highly recommended to take advantage of the ability to mix and match. Opting for two 'single' flats allows for a culinary adventure without committing to a single flavor. The Buffalo Chicken Flat comes highly praised as an excellent choice, noted for its authentic and satisfying flavor profile. The Korean BBQ Flat is a must-try for a unique savory experience, showcasing the kitchen’s creative spirit. Additionally, anyone managing dietary restrictions should absolutely try the gluten-free cauliflower flatbread option—it's a major highlight and a rarity for a sandwich concept in this price bracket. ★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1What I love about this concept is that you can mix and match the flats, if you’re in the mood for more than one flavor. I got two “singles” for $16 total, & I was full. If you’re with friends you could all get diff flavors and mix / match. Buff chicken was excellent. Happy about the new addition to the neighborhood!
April 05 · NWI love this place!! I’ve been here a handful of times so far. So far, I’ve had the turkey sausage, egg & cheese flat, the pizza flat, the Korean bbq flat and the buffalo chicken flat. And the cheese tots! The flats have been really good so far, and I’m allergic to gluten and they have gluten free flats. I don’t have Celiac, so I can’t speak for cross contamination, but due to medical issues I can’t eat gluten, and this place hasn’t made me feel sick. This is a huge win IMO.The pizza is a TREAAAAT. I’ve never had a pizza bagel before. 10/10 :)I also think it’s super affordable. For reference, I just had two gluten free pizza flats which filled me up just fine for dinner for less than $7. If I wanted pizza at the best pizza place in Astoria for gluten free, I would have to buy a tiny pie which is about the same size of the flats and it’s $18. This is less than half the price! And for anyone thinking “$7 for that????” They charge extra for gluten free bagels, and those of us with allergies are used to paying an arm and a leg just to have a taste of normalcy.I think this place is very affordable.
May 14 · Alex SiderosYou know a place is good! When you go there twice in one day, I tried the original pizza and now the tuna salad, their food is to die for it’s so delicious and comforting food. I thank this place for amazing service and xcellentt food, thank you so much!
April 01 · Arielle JoThis place is a great addition to the neighborhood. The food was tasty and a really good value. The bright orange lighting was a bit much, but everyone who worked there was really friendly and I can imagine it being a great spot to grab a quick bite and start the party vibes before hitting the bars on the avenue. The bagels themselves are a little softer than regular bagels and this is really what makes them perfect for open faced sandwiches.
April 09 · Chiara D'Amore-KlaimanThe food is good but quality is similar to Subway shops. The service was fantastic! The owner or manager even came out to ask how it was. The tots are great, the Cuban was better than expected but the price....1/2 a bagel with an ok portion of toppings for $11 is a bit insane, even in these times. I wonder why the Brooklyn location closed... Need to make it more affordable and everyone will be going on their way off the train more often. Supply is huge in the area, so you have to create more of a demand with proper pricing.
