Happen to see it the last time we came here and decided today to give it a try.Place is a comfortable setting with music not to loud so you can hold a conversation. Very clean and well laid out with 6 small tables for two and 2 larger tables for four on the left as you enter. 2 smaller tables on the, two small table set together for four and a large table for four on the right. Well lit and modern.I’ll have to come back to this review to write a more detailed review of the food when I get home but suffice to say the food was great. One note if you order $30plus you get a free bubble tea or a side order of popcorn chicken. We had the chicken and it was light and crispy along with flavorful and moist.Being Taiwanese I have to say that the food was on par with going back home and eating out in Taiwan. This place unfortunately doesn’t really have as much space to accommodate larger groups but if you go there early on a Wednesday I can say that around 7pm it’s possible. Wait staff here are good, though I did experience a need to ask for water. Beyond that they were helpful and courteous.Okay, here’s the detailed food review.Dish 1, Black Fungus in Vinegar Sauce - definitely an unexpected delight. Tender and had a nice texture with just the right amount of sauce for flavor.Dish 2, Taiwanese Popcorn Chicken - this was the free choice we made since our order was $30plus. Lightly crispy but not oily and the chicken was tender. The sauce made it delicious and there were what I think was fried mint leaves that added to the dish.Dish 3, Taiwanese Fired Pork Chop Over Rice - the batter was crispy and crunchy and not oily. The pork was moist as expected but be aware the thinner portion may be drier. Pickle veggie and a 1/2 a Tea Egg accompanied this dish. I’ve had other versions but I particularly liked this places style as the crispiness of the batter was an enjoyable texture with the pork.Dish 4, Braised Beef, Tendon & Tripe Rice. The overall flavor of each was delicious. I wish there was more beef though. The Tendon was scrumptious and meaty. If you were wanting tendon I would say this is the one to be compared with. It was solid enough to bite into but still tender enough to be savory and enjoyed as there were in my dish 3-4 chunky pieces. The Tripe was well done and didn’t have the scent that some places might have because it was not prepared or cook just right. If you’ve experienced that you understand what I mean. Pickle veggie and a 1/2 a Tea Egg accompanied this dish. This was my personal main dish and I was tempted to lick the plate but being with my significant other I restrained myself.

Initially hesitant to try Four Four because we really wanted a mom and pop shop with some down dirty good food and not necessarily in a modern take restaurant - after reading about their Beef Noodle Soup being pretty popular - we went.Service was average. Waiter dropped off menus and came back to take our orders. Not particularly welcoming or warm, especially given that it’s a fairly new spot - we’d expect extra care in the first-impression department. Anyways - the complimentary hot tea hit the spot and was refilled timely.Beef Noodle Soup with Tendon 7/10The soup base is the deeper red style. It was definitely a tad too sweet but it’s better than being too salty I guess. The meat and tendon portions were a bit on the smaller side. The beef was ok, not super tender. The tendon was as expected - gelatinous and yummy. The star of the dish, was infact the noodles themselves. The noodles were cooked perfectly, chewy and wheaty. I don’t believe they are handmade but in any case, great noodles. For the price of near $17 - we’d like to see better portions especially in the meat, and more broth. Not enough broth ratio.Noodles with Spicy Sauce & Beef 8/10The noodles were the same as the soup dish - chewy and very nice. The beef on this dish is the thinly sliced shank variety and it was very good. Better than the chunks in the noodle soup. The spicy sauce is a mix of some chilies and oil and scallions and what I believe tastes like sacha sauce (a chinese barbecue sauce of sorts). Again, the overall dish was a tad too sweet and not very spicy at all. Given its name - we did expect a better spice profile. Portion on this dish was seemingly better for value.Lu Wei 6/10Ala Carte or via an Assorted Mix Plate, these are various ingredients, braised in sauces and served cold. Very traditional to see Lu Wei as an everyday part of life in Taiwan, Four Four offers a limited selection such as hard boiled egg, braised tofu, kelp knots, pigs ears etc. The sauce was a mild soy sauce and overall - it was pretty standard. It’s akin to the culture of having ‘banchan’ or side dishes to accompany rice. For those who haven’t tried it - the Assorted Mix is a good intro though our favorite were the bouncy, chewy pig ears.Would we go back? Maybe, yes. For thew great noodles despite the soup broth, meat and sauces being a bit underwhelming. We’d love to see some improvements here!
April 30 · SPStumbled upon this restaurant for a weekday dinner it was fantastic! Good atmosphere, quick and attentive service, and delicious food! We got the pork baos, Dan Dan noodles, and of course the beef noodle soup that were all deliciously seasoned with very tender meat. Large portions for a great price, highly recommend and love having a piece of home right in Bayside!
