Stopped in on a Saturday at around noon to pick up some rice rolls to try. I was trying to find out how many rolls come in a small vs. a large, but they don't speak English. They also don't cut it up, they just kind of plop a giant pile of rice roll into a box. I got the cilantro, beef, and shrimp (all large). I think if you order small, they have some pre-made but the large, they make it fresh. They were all meh. I think they grind their own rice there because I saw them transferring rice from buckets to plastic bags. The texture isn't as smooth as dim sum restaurants. I think I might even like the cart churng funs better. Don't think I'd order from here again. - Melanie Tam

What is Worth Choosing at Hong Kong Dim Sum

When choosing where to eat Chinese food in New York, the specialized nature of Hong Kong Dim Sum provides a compelling reason to visit. What makes this establishment particularly worth choosing is its focus on two classic Cantonese staples—Congee and Rice Rolls—which are often highlighted as being made with care and authenticity.

For those new to the restaurant, the rice rolls are a must-try. Despite some variations in texture that may be noted by seasoned dim sum experts, the fact that they are often made fresh, particularly the larger orders, speaks to a commitment to quality over mass production. The variety, from the traditional Beef and BBQ Pork options to the more unique Parsley and Watercress, offers a range of flavors for any palate. The generous portions and affordability, with most items priced under $3.00, make this a tremendous value proposition in the high-cost environment of New York City.

Equally compelling is the congee selection. This is not just thin rice soup; congee at its best is a comforting, silky rice porridge. With savory options like Pork, Beef, and Chicken, as well as a Vegetable option and the specialty Lai Wan Style, it’s an ideal choice for a light yet deeply satisfying breakfast or lunch. Customer feedback often specifically praises the deliciousness of dishes like the pork and egg rice rolls and the flavorful vegetable congee, reinforcing the quality of these core offerings.

If you are a New Yorker seeking an authentic, neighborhood-friendly Chinese restaurant that prioritizes traditional Cantonese breakfast and comfort foods with speed and value, Hong Kong Dim Sum is a reliably excellent choice. It’s a genuine slice of Hong Kong’s casual, everyday food culture, right here in Brooklyn.
