Jang-eo Jip (장어집) Introduce
For those living in or visiting New Jersey and seeking a truly unique and deeply authentic Korean dining experience, Jang-eo Jip (장어집) in Palisades Park is a must-visit destination. Unlike many of the bustling Korean barbecue spots, this restaurant offers a focused and specialized menu centered on a delicacy that is revered in both Korea and Japan: eel. The name "Jang-eo Jip" literally translates to "Eel House," and it is this singular focus that allows them to perfect their craft. The atmosphere is warm, intimate, and immediately makes you feel like you're a guest in someone's home, rather than a customer in a commercial establishment. This isn't just a place to eat; it's a place to be nourished, to feel the comfort of a home-cooked meal, and to discover a new favorite. The friendly and attentive staff add to this feeling of genuine hospitality, making every visit a pleasant one.
Jang-eo Jip has a reputation for its mastery of preparing eel, offering both freshwater (minmul jang-eo) and saltwater (seaeel) options. The quality of the ingredients is evident in every dish, and the simple preparation highlights the natural, fresh taste of the eel. As one customer raved, the eel here is "some of the best grilled eel I've ever had, including in Korea and Japan." The menu also extends beyond eel to include a selection of classic Korean comfort foods, ensuring there's something to satisfy every craving. From hearty stews to refreshing noodles, the additional offerings are just as meticulously prepared as the main attraction. The commitment to a home-style cooking approach, with "their own spin on things," as noted by a reviewer, truly sets this restaurant apart. It's a culinary experience that feels personal, traditional, and incredibly satisfying.
Jang-eo Jip is conveniently located at 118 Broad Ave N5, Palisades Park, NJ 07650. For a discerning diner, what is worth choosing at Jang-eo Jip is its unwavering commitment to specialty and quality. The fresh, lightly seasoned eel is a primary highlight, especially for those who appreciate the delicate flavor of the fish itself. One customer mentioned that the eel is "not heavily seasoned," which is a perfect point for those seeking a more authentic and unadulterated taste. Beyond the eel, the eel soup (Jang-eo Tang) is a surprisingly hearty and home-like dish that offers a deep, savory flavor. The seafood pancake (Haemul Pajeon) is also a standout, described as "very thick" and generously filled with squid. The variety of other comfort food options, such as Yukgaejang (Spicy Beef Soup) and Bibimbap, ensures that even those who aren't avid eel eaters can find a fantastic meal. ★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I would describe this place like a warm sweater on a cool day. We discovered this place by accident. There are only 3 tables inside, I think there are a few more in the back outside. This is some of the best grilled eel I've ever had, including in Korea and Japan, but at Palisades Park. The eel soup was surprisingly hearty and feels very home like. As I was eating everything, I felt like I was at someone's house. The side dishes are second to none. They have their own spin on things and they did a great job. This really feels like you're eating at someone's house. It's on my top Korean restaurants now
September 28 · Chu LinThe food is delicious. The lady is very nice. I love their seafood pancake. It’s very thick. It has a lot of squid. I think their eel is pretty fresh, not heavily seasoned. so if you like something heavily seasoned ,that might be not for you, I think generally people prefer the seasoned eel.
May 18 · Miaolai ZhouFirstly, the portion size was very small. The amount for two servings was just enough to fit on a plate around 15 cm in diameter, which was barely enough for the two of us to eat.Secondly, the price was expensive! From previous posts, one serving was about $27.50, and they required a minimum of two servings. But today, when we went, it had increased to nearly $33, so just for the two of us to eat eel cost over $70. Considering the portion size, it was really not worth it! Additionally, previous visitors mentioned that they were given eel soup and a scallion pancake, but today we were told that the scallion pancake costs $15. Also, the grilled fish didn't come with rice, which was really disappointing.Thirdly, the taste was poor! The key to eating grilled eel is the sauce, but the eel here had hardly any sauce at all.The sea eel itself was dry and tough from grilling, and since it was being cooked over a fire at the table, it just got drier and drier. The salt-grilled river eel tasted really fishy, which is probably why they put so much ginger on it. This is the only place l've seen add shredded ginger to their eel. By the end, all you could taste was the ginger.Fourthly, the service was terrible! There was only one older lady who didn't speak English serving. Throughout the meal, aside from giving us two small bottles of mineral water and a little bit of cold dishes, we hardly saw her. The side dishes she gave were extremely spicy and completely inedible. It was really disappointing.
July 01 · Tiffany FanThe food and side dishes were really great! The owner was really sweet and nice. The service was great as the owner provided more refills of side dishes if needed but even provided toddler friendly utensils for my son.The taste of the eel reminded me of when I had it in Korea. They did a really good job of cooking it. I couldn't take more pictures because of my son but here is one photo.
January 26 · Carol KimSo delicious Eel place. It’s authentic Korean Style. They only focus on EEL. I had salted and Grill, Seasoned thing. Both were so nice. They have a limited dinning place, but you can take out it. I will add my favorite place.
