## What is Worth Choosing
For New York diners visiting Joyful Cantonese Restaurant, the best choices come from the unique categories that showcase authentic Guangdong cooking. Steer towards the menu sections that truly distinguish this spot from a typical Chinese takeout place:
Claypot Rice (煲仔飯): This is arguably the most essential item to try, a Cantonese specialty where the rice is cooked in an earthenware pot until a crispy layer forms at the bottom. It is a true comfort dish. Highly recommended options include the Spare Ribs With Black Bean Sauce ($13.23) and the authentic Salted Fish With Minced Meat ($14.38). For the adventurous, the Yellow Eel ($18.39) option is a genuine delicacy.
Fusion Kitchens Roast (燒味): The Cantonese are masters of roasted meats, and the roast counter is often the heart of the restaurant. The menu offers options like Roast Pork (LB) ($14.38) and Crispy Roast Pig (LB) ($14.38), which are the benchmark for quality Cantonese cooking. The combinations, such as the Three Choice Of BBQ Meat Over Rice, are an excellent way to sample the kitchen’s best.
Chef Recommendations: This section features signature, heartier entrees. The Salt And Pepper Shrimps ($29.84) and the Walnut Shrimp Balls ($29.84) are classic Cantonese banquet dishes known for their balance of flavor and texture. For meat lovers, the Honey Beef Ribs ($34.44) offers a rich, sweet, and savory profile.
Claypot Food (瓦煲菜): Distinct from the rice, these are stews and braises cooked and served in a casserole, maximizing depth of flavor. The Beef Brisket In Bamboo Casserole ($31.04) or the intensely flavored Salted Fish With Egg Plant In Casserole ($24.14) are perfect choices for a deeply satisfying, warming meal.
Finally, for a budget-friendly and quick option, the Lunch Special menu is robust, featuring items like Beef Brisket Wth Bean Curd Rice ($12.59) or Curry Chicken Rice ($11.44)—perfect for a satisfying midday break.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1This newly opened Cantonese-style restaurant offers great-tasting food overall. However, the space is a bit limited, and the wait time can be a little longer due to the small kitchen. Despite that, it’s still worth a visit.
July 29 · Constance LAfter back from my vacation, this restaurant had been switch to other owners. The foods were definitely delicious! Love it!
August 10 · Kary PengFood is delicious and fresh! Nice size portions and the duck was perfect. 100% recommended it’s nice not having to go over the bridge to get fresh duck. The staff is super sweet and friendly as well.
February 27 · alexis elenaThey just opened today so it is a bit chaotic but overall the food is pretty good, on par with what you would get in Brooklyn, Flushing, and Manhattan chinatowns. Their Fried Dough “you tiao” is one of the best I’ve had outside of Taiwan though. I hope they can continue to improve their food and service and not go downhill as many new places tend to do.My two complaints were:My rice rolls did not come with any sauce. Thankfully I can make sauce myself at home. The lady who took our order said 10-15 minutes so we paid first, I took my mom home before returning, 20 min or so endeavor and when I got back, I still had to wait and they forgot I paid already. (They need a system or stamp to show order is paid).Edit: day 2, I called ahead for order, was told 10-15 minutes and now it has been 45 minutes…still no food. I only ordered 3 rice rolls, 2 fried dough sticks, 1lb roast park, and congee….I witnessed a guy take 15 minutes to get the bill, a whole table sat and waited 10 minutes before walking out without ordering due to the wait. This is not good… despite how good the food is, this is abysmal service.2nd update. 70 minutes later I have no food. They never even made it. This is stupid. I sat in their store waiting for 60+ minutes watching other foods being made. I could’ve gone to brooklyn and back, finished eating, done my dishes in all this time. I took a seat as instructed and apparently the same guy who told me to sit and wait… ended up voiding my order sometime during the 70 minutes of waiting in their store. Why? They thought I left. I was sitting in front of them the whole time. Never moved. Had even checked 30 minutes in and they said almost done. 🤯🤬 when I finally left, the guy who waited 15 minutes to get his bill… his table was never cleaned by the time I left… so it was left dirty for over 45 minutes. 🤦🏻♀️2025 update:It may be under new ownership now because all the staff are different, seems like a really seasoned restaurant crew who are competent, friendly, and very efficient. The food is also super delicious, on par with brooklyn chinatowns. True Cantonese flavors and styles.
February 15 · Eugenia TsuiThis was my third time dining here, and honestly, the service really needs improvement. Each visit, the staff seems inattentive and there isn’t much effort in providing good service. The food has potential, but the flavors are very inconsistent — sometimes the dishes taste great, other times they feel off and lack balance. It’s disappointing because you can tell the menu is strong, but the execution just isn’t stable.Overall, I want to like this place, but without better service and more consistent quality in the food, it’s hard to fully recommend.
