Lloyd's Carrot Cake Introduce
Welcome to a true New York institution that has been delighting local sweet-tooths and drawing dessert aficionados from across the city and beyond for decades: Lloyd's Carrot Cake. Located in the quiet Riverdale section of the Bronx, this boutique bakery has earned a legendary status, not just in its home borough, but throughout the tri-state area and even across the nation. What started as a small, family-driven venture based on a beloved mother's recipe has blossomed into a recognized brand synonymous with one of the most celebrated carrot cakes in the United States. For New Yorkers looking for a classic, homemade, and satisfying dessert experience, Lloyd's is a pilgrimage worth making.
The bakery was founded by the late Lloyd Adams, who fine-tuned his mother's original recipe in his Harlem apartment before opening the first storefront in the Bronx in 1986. This dedication to craft and a focus on high-quality, made-from-scratch goods quickly established a loyal following. Despite the passing of both the founder and his wife, Betty Campbell-Adams, the legacy is being proudly carried on by their children, Lilka and Brandon Adams. This multi-generational commitment ensures that the classic recipe, which many consider to be "arguably THE BEST carrot cake ever made," continues to deliver its signature taste and texture. The love and family dedication poured into this small operation are a palpable part of the local community fabric in the Bronx.
While the name clearly highlights their specialty, Lloyd's Carrot Cake offers more than just the iconic confection. They are a full-service bakery and a wholesale partner, supplying a variety of delicious cakes, pies, and muffins to numerous patrons and businesses. They have been recognized by major New York publications like New York Magazine, which named their carrot cake one of their critic’s favorites, and Time Out New York, which selected it as one of the top six desserts in New York City. The Daily News famously labeled it "24 Carrot Good," and it has even been featured on The Food Network’s "The Best Thing I Ever Ate." These accolades affirm its status as a must-try local landmark for anyone craving a truly exceptional dessert.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I discovered this bakery on Instagram and made a mental note to visit the next time I was nearby. A few weeks later, I finally had the opportunity to stop by and picked up a few slices of the various flavors they offered.First, I want to mention that this is not a large bakery at all; it appears to be a family-oriented establishment. I specifically went there for the carrot cake, which they offer with or without nuts, available either as a whole cake or by the slice.I purchased one slice of each flavor, and although I don’t remember the exact prices, they were reasonable. As for the carrot cake, it was just okay. I wasn't particularly impressed; I've had better. While it was tasty, it was a bit dry. My mom, who is the "carrot cake queen," agreed with me without me prompting her, so I knew my opinion was confirmed. On a positive note, I really enjoyed the coconut scone—it was moist and not overly sweet. I didn't taste the chocolate slice, and the strawberry slice was just okay. Overall, I believe the visit was worth it, but I might choose to pass on this bakery in the future. I do want to commend them for being a small, Black-owned business that has made a name for itself, so kudos to them!
May 25 · Nonna StarrI have to say that this place has THE BEST carrot cake ever. I’ve traveled to almost 42 states and have moved over 40 times in my life, including multiple countries. This is the best place for cake HANDS DOWN! They’re very accommodating through Instagram messaging, so if you have any questions, reach out to them through there! The BEST!!!!!!
May 01 · Mike SwitzerI would like to start off by staying what happened to this place, me being supportive local native of this bakery for my years I can fairly distinguish the level of care and love that used to go into they cake to what I received yesterday. The craftsmanship really prompted this review paying $50 to have your cake look like third grader baking project is insane. So it’s a hit and missed for me presentation sucks , cake tasting amazing.
June 20 · Roland TurnerI had a wonderful experience with this bakery. From the moment you walk in, the heavenly smell of fresh baked goods greets you, it’s absolutely mouthwatering. The staff is incredibly helpful and attentive, and they serve you promptly when you come in to pick up your order. Their cakes can be nut and raisin free. They’re automatically decorated with a warm and delicious cream cheese frosting. Messages can also be added upon request, their ordering system works so great.I have a grape allergy and was unaware that the cakes typically came with them. As soon as I brought it up, they didn’t hesitate to help me and went above and beyond to rectify the issue. Their communication throughout was consistent, respectful, and reassuring. You can tell they take great pride in their work and truly care about their customers. Parking can be a bit tricky, but if you arrive early, you might snag a spot. Either way, it’s worth the effort just be patient; these folks work incredibly hard.I’m so impressed with their service and quality that I’ll be a forever customer. Highly recommend!
