Prohibition Introduce
Welcome to a spotlight on one of Bergen County’s captivating dining destinations: Prohibition, an American restaurant nestled right in the heart of Westwood, New Jersey. This establishment has quickly become a local favorite by expertly blending the comfort of classic American bistro fare with an ultra-modern, slightly speakeasy-inspired vibe. For those in North Jersey looking for a spot that offers great food, a lively atmosphere, and a truly welcoming community feel, Prohibition is a must-visit.
The restaurant's operator, Maria Sausa, has been noted for her dedication to understanding and embodying the true culture of Westwood—a family-owned, regular community. This commitment shines through in the service and the overall experience, aiming to create something special for the town. The overall concept brings an old-world charm, hinting at the Prohibition era, but delivers it with a contemporary flourish, ensuring a fresh and engaging experience for every guest.
Prohibition successfully carves out its niche in the competitive New Jersey dining scene by focusing on quality and a diverse menu that caters to a wide array of tastes. Whether you’re stopping by for a quick lunch, a family dinner, or cocktails with friends, the American bistro theme is executed with flair, ensuring that the food is both familiar and excitingly new. The ambiance complements the menu, offering a comfortable yet chic backdrop for any occasion.
An interesting development for this local gem is the plan for expansion. The operator, Maria Sausa, has mentioned plans for a significant expansion, which, according to one customer's account, includes adding a second floor. This signals not only the restaurant's success but also its dedication to growing with the Westwood community and offering even more space and amenities for its patrons. This planned growth will further solidify Prohibition’s role as a key community fixture.
The menu at Prohibition is an exploration of contemporary American favorites, perfectly suited for the New Jersey palate. Diners can move from inventive small plates and "Al Fresco Bites" to satisfying main courses. Starters like the Parmesan Truffle Fries, with their decadent black truffle aioli, are a popular choice, as are the Crispy Chicken Wings featuring a delicious honey hat sauce and gorgonzola buttermilk dip.
The "Robust & Savory" section features hearty classics, including the highly recommended Steak Frites—a chargrilled skirt steak served with shoestring fries and horseradish creme—and the comforting Chicken & Waffles, which combines buttermilk fried chicken with a malted waffle, spicy honey, and pickled red onions. Even the "Bun Stuff" category elevates simple handhelds: the Prohibition Burger is an 8 oz Pat LaFrieda blend patty with red wine onion jam and white aged cheddar, and the Boo Boo Cheesesteak features chopped prime ribeye.
Prohibition also caters to lighter fare with the "Tangled Leaves" section, offering fresh, thoughtful salads like the Fennel & Orange Salad with avocado and citrus shallot vinaigrette, and the Roasted Beets salad paired with local goat cheese and candied pecans. The inclusion of dishes like the Garlic Lime Chicken Taco and Red Chili Steak Tips Taco under "Main Street Tacos" showcases the menu's ability to incorporate global flavors within its American framework.
Finally, no meal is complete without dessert. Prohibition offers delightful sweet endings such as the classic Vanilla Creme Brulee and the indulgent Cinnamon-Sugar Churros served with dulce de leche and chocolate ganache, making for a perfect final note to your dining experience.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I went to Prohibition for the first time for drinks. After being seated, the server, Tommy, came to the table quite quickly. He is very personable and fun.I ordered a Perfect Martini, which is a somewhat unknown drink in many bars, so I them what is in it. He brought back my drink soon thereafter and said that bartender knew what it was immediately. It was a "perfect" Perfect Martini, which most bars somehow do not make quite as well!Later on, I stopped by the bar and spoke with the bartender "Maria" to tell her that she made my Perfect Martini perfectly. It ends up that Maria is the owner and is very pleasant and good with her customers! She was talking to a customer at the bar who was drinking a Dirty Martini, and said it was made so well. Her name is also Maria, and she is a commercial banker, dressed so well all in black (Oooo La La).I look forward to going back next Thursday or Friday for another Perfect Martini ... hopefully Maria is there again!Maria mentioned they will be doing a big expansion in December to add a second floor! I look forward to seeing that.
December 03 · Tom R. GarlickGood--Food: chicken sandwich and burger were delicious, fries were cooked perfectly, Coleslaw was great.- Atmosphere: very neat, good themingBad-Credit card fee: come on!! Don’t pass that fee on to your customers. Honestly ruined the vibe as soon as we see that on the menu.Price: should not cost $80 for a beer and a burger for 2 peopleService: very slowoverall, probably won’t come back- as I was penalized for using a credit card on an already over priced meal. It’s a shame bc the food and atmosphere are good.
November 14 · Brendan BegnocheWent in this place for an interview, (which never happened) and the owner wasn’t there but some other lady was. Ok fine, she asked if I can wait for the owner and I said sure no problem. Then all of a sudden this lady has me setting up the restaurant!!!! I was like Um, ok?????? So, the owner finally comes in (now mind you, I had an appt with her) and the lady that had me setting up tells the owner I was there for an interview. So they start talking in front of me and the owner is like “I don’t know who she is” and yadda yadda. So that gets straightened out and she starts asking me questions while setting up the bar and making herself drinks! Meanwhile we keep getting interrupted by the other lady and they just keep having me “work” as they go back and forth with stuff about the restaurant and it’s like they have no idea what is going on. I ended up leaving and telling her I’ll call her ( I never did). That place is the most unorganized, understaffed( which I know why) and unprofessional place I have ever went to. The two women that own the place I think are married, because that’s the kind of bickering they were doing lol!!! If you are looking to work there, or even dine, stay away!!!!! There are much better places in Westwood. Oh and during my “interview” the owner says to me, Westwood is such a boring town. I am here to turn this town into Hoboken!!! Yeah , not going to happen considering the cops have been called numerous times on the loud music outside until midnight! That got shut down real quick!!! It is residential neighborhood!!EDIT TO MY ORIGINAL REVIEWThe place closed down!!!!
