Famous Fish Market Introduce
Introduction / Overview: A True Harlem Seafood Institution
For decades, the Famous Fish Market has been far more than just a place to grab a quick meal in New York City; it is a genuine Harlem institution. Operating since 1974, this beloved seafood restaurant is a staple for locals, college students, and in-the-know tourists alike, all drawn to its reputation for delivering fresh, perfectly cooked, and satisfying fried seafood. Located on St Nicholas Avenue, this establishment has earned its “Famous” moniker through nearly fifty years of consistent quality, generous portions, and truly accessible pricing—qualities that are highly valued in the competitive NYC dining scene.
The core philosophy of the Famous Fish Market is simple: focus on doing a few things exceptionally well. The menu centers almost exclusively on expertly fried fish, shrimp, and clams, served with classic sides like fries (or chips). This dedication to simple, delicious comfort food has resulted in a loyal following and a vibrant atmosphere. Patrons often describe the experience as a true "grab & go" gem, a place where you know exactly what you’re getting: hot food, great taste, and service that’s on point. Its atmosphere is notably casual, but with a historic and even trendy feel, a testament to its long-standing presence and continued popularity in the ever-evolving landscape of Harlem dining. When New Yorkers crave that deep, comforting crunch of a perfectly fried piece of fish, this is the destination.
While the establishment may be small and often features a line snaking around the corner—a clear indicator of its popularity and worth—the experience of tasting their fresh, crispy seafood makes the wait a quintessential New York moment and entirely worthwhile. The emphasis here is on speed and quality takeout, catering perfectly to the busy rhythms of the city.

August 14 · Rebecca PSometimes you just want a place that takes your order (a grab & go).. well if you are in Harlem, this should be your go to place. The price is right, the service is on point and your meal is soooo good. It’s a 2 step down to enter, no seating, order, pay and wait outside for your number to be called. It’s been around since 1974. Trust me, you will be fine… It’s fish, shrimp & fries (the combo) get the ice tea, you won’t be disappointed. 😎
May 30 · Marian BoullonThe food was phenomenal. Everything was cooked to order and cooked perfectly. I hadn’t eaten all day today, so I couldn’t until I got home. I devoured it on the bus. LolI ordered fish, shrimp, and chips combo. Everything was delicious. I don’t know what kind of fish that was, but it was fresh and flaky. The shrimps were perfect. The batter was thin and crispy. The chips were nice, some were a bit moist and cold. It even came with 2 slices of breads, and I made a nice fish sandwich with their tartar sauce. The sauce was also nice, and the flavor was very balanced. A little sweet, and a little sour. It was a good meal. The only thing was that the service could be nicer. The restaurant was clean, but watch out those stairs.
July 03 · Bradley CLiterally the best fried whiting period. And I’ve been eating fried fish my whole life, even better than my grandma or Auntie back down in the country in North Carolina back in the 70’s. I’ve been coming here for 20 years and it’s been consistently delicious every time.
August 12 · Craig McDowellIt's small but clean. Doesn't have the fishy awful smell outside either. The seafood is only seasoned with black pepper. But, that's expected. You season to your liking. This place is a Harlem stable. Very friendly. And, one of the last original spots in Harlem.
