Being originally from Kolkata—the birthplace of the kati roll—my standards for this dish are understandably high. I stopped by this spot on a weekend night, and the place was packed, with a line spilling out the door. After waiting quite a while, I finally got to order. The restaurant seemed heavily understaffed, with one person juggling both orders and wrapping rolls, while a few others worked in the back.I ordered an anda chicken roll, which typically combines a paratha layered with fried egg, stuffed with chicken kebabs, onions, and seasonings. Unfortunately, this version fell short of the authentic Kolkata standard. The biggest letdown was the paratha—it seemed pre-made or frozen, thin, and lacking the signature flaky, layered crunch of a freshly rolled lachha paratha fried to crisp perfection. Since the paratha is the foundation of the roll, that missing texture made a big difference. The chicken filling itself was decent, though not outstanding. The onions added some freshness, but the heavy use of green chutney was overwhelming. In Kolkata, rolls are usually finished more simply—with lemon, salt, pepper, and sometimes a touch of tomato and chili sauce. The chutney here made the flavor too one-dimensional, dominated by mint, without balance. The portion size also felt smaller than what you’d typically get back home. That said, I do appreciate having the chance to enjoy a chicken roll in Manhattan, far from Kolkata. The concept is wonderful, and credit goes to the owner for bringing this comfort food here. But between the long wait, understaffing, and lack of care in preparation, the overall experience didn’t live up to its potential. With more attention to authenticity—especially the paratha—and a little more care in execution, this place could truly shine. - Debisree Ray

The Kati Roll Company Introduce

In a city known for its incredibly diverse culinary landscape, some of the most exciting finds are often the most specialized. The Kati Roll Company, located in the heart of Midtown Manhattan, is a prime example. This unique Indian restaurant focuses on one iconic dish: the kati roll. A quintessential street food from Kolkata, India, a kati roll is a savory filling, such as spiced chicken, paneer, or vegetables, wrapped in a flaky paratha or a lighter roti. The Kati Roll Company has brought this beloved tradition to New York City, offering a fast, flavorful, and convenient dining experience that has quickly become a local favorite. It’s a perfect spot for those seeking a quick and satisfying meal that feels both authentic and approachable.

The concept behind The Kati Roll Company is simple yet brilliant: take a classic, portable street food and serve it with care and attention to quality. The menu is intentionally focused, allowing the restaurant to perfect each item. While the rolls are the stars, the variety of fillings ensures there is something for everyone. Whether you prefer a meaty Chicken Tikka Roll, a vegetarian Aloo Masala Roll, or a combination like the Unda Paneer Roll, the choice is yours. The option to select between a traditional, layered paratha or a healthier, whole wheat roti also caters to different tastes and dietary preferences. This focus on a single, standout item helps maintain the authentic feel and ensures that each roll is made to order and served fresh, capturing the essence of a true street food experience.

The atmosphere at The Kati Roll Company is casual and trendy, reflecting the quick-service nature of the food. It's designed for a fast-paced urban crowd, with the added benefit of being a great spot for groups and even a quick, solo bite. It's not a place for a long, drawn-out dinner, but rather a hub of delicious activity where you can get a satisfying meal without a fuss. The restaurant's popularity means that at peak times, you might encounter a wait, a clear sign of its high demand and loyal customer base. The efficiency of the operation, however, helps keep the line moving, ensuring that you won't have to wait too long to get your hands on one of their famous rolls.

The Kati Roll Company is situated at 49 W 39th St, New York, NY 10018. This prime location places it squarely in the middle of a vibrant and bustling part of Midtown Manhattan, just a few blocks away from Bryant Park. Its proximity to major corporate offices, shopping areas, and tourist attractions makes it an incredibly convenient dining option. The neighborhood is well-connected by public transportation, with numerous subway lines (including the B, D, F, M, 7, N, Q, R, W, and S trains) and bus routes serving the area. This makes getting to The Kati Roll Company easy for both local commuters and tourists exploring the city.

While street parking is available, it can be scarce and is typically metered, so public transit is often the most convenient way to reach the restaurant. The wheelchair-accessible seating ensures that the space is welcoming to a wide range of customers. The location near Bryant Park is a significant advantage, allowing visitors to grab a delicious kati roll and enjoy it as a picnic in the park, especially on a nice day. This combination of a central location and easy accessibility makes The Kati Roll Company a smart choice for anyone looking for a quick and satisfying meal while on the go in Midtown.
