The Old '76 House Introduce
Welcome to The Old '76 House, an extraordinary American restaurant and historical landmark nestled in Tappan, New York. Far more than just a place to enjoy a delicious meal, The Old '76 House is proudly touted as America’s Oldest Tavern, with its origins dating back to the mid-17th century. This historic gem offers New York residents and visitors a unique opportunity to dine amidst centuries of American history, all while savoring contemporary American cuisine in an atmosphere that is both cozy and profoundly historic. For those in the New York region seeking a restaurant experience that transcends the ordinary, a visit to this Rockland County treasure is an absolute must.
The history of The Old '76 House is inextricably linked to the American Revolutionary War, earning it the enduring nickname of "André's Prison." Its most famous historical event occurred in 1780 when it served as the makeshift detention site for Major John André, the British spy who conspired with Benedict Arnold to surrender the crucial American fort at West Point. The trial of Major André took place nearby, and his execution occurred on a hill just behind the tavern, marking a pivotal and dramatic moment in the war. The building was also a significant gathering spot for local patriots and, on occasion, even hosted Commander-in-Chief General George Washington. Today, the tavern has been beautifully restored, inviting patrons to literally walk the same floorboards as the nation’s founders and historical figures, making every visit a step back in time.
The cuisine at The Old '76 House is a masterful blend of American tradition and modern refinement. The menu features hearty, well-loved dishes alongside more sophisticated plates, ensuring there is something to satisfy every palate. Start your culinary journey with a classic like the Famous Onion Soup Lafayette or perhaps a regionally-inspired appetizer such as the Top Neck Baked Stuffed Clams or the Maine Mussels Meuniere.
For the main course, you can indulge in comfort food favorites like the highly recommended ’76 House Yankee Pot Roast with sweet cabbage and mashed potato, or the Traditional American Meatloaf. More refined options include the Faroe Island Salmon Terrine, Duckling Hamilton with an orange and Grand Marnier glaze, or a succulent Roast Prime Rib Of Beef. The tavern is also attentive to diverse dietary needs, offering delicious Vegan Moussaka and healthy options throughout the menu. The brunch menu is equally inviting, with specialty items such as the Traitorous Eggs Benedict and the sweet Nutella Stuffed French Toast.
No visit is complete without exploring the extensive beverage selection, which perfectly complements the menu. The bar features a great selection of local and international craft beers, including the house’s own 76 House Tavernkeeper Ale, alongside a superb list of wines, and an array of fine bourbons and single malts. Unique offerings like the '76 Washington's Coffee—made with Laird's Applejack, Washington's alleged favorite—add a spirited historical touch to your evening.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1What a charming and historic tavern! The Old 76 House was definitely a highlight of our time in the Hudson Valley. The atmosphere is rich with history, and you can really feel it the moment you walk in. The food was delicious, and the live jazz music by Judy Marie & Friends made the evening feel extra special. A perfect blend of great food, music, and ambiance—highly recommended!
August 21 · Philena SpenceThis place has so much history. The food was delicious. Had the chicken pot pie & shepherds pie. Both were incredible. Tom the mgr came over and introduced himself & intrigue us on the history of the place. They also had live jazz music playing which was enjoyable during dinner. Can’t wait to go back to try other menu items
September 22 · Ralph DuvalMy sister in law recommended this place while we were in NY! I wish it was closer to where we lived! The atmosphere was rustic. The ambiance inviting.. there was even a live band playing. The food was off the charts amazing. My husband, daughter and I shared the Faroe Isaland Salmon Terrine and the Cordon Bleu and loved every bite!Everything about this place is what we love. Plus it's the oldest restaurant in America, so of course, it's a must for us! Looking forward to when we can go back!
August 12 · Tara HolsmanLovely and cozy, lots of history within these walls. I really enjoyed the old photos on the wall (Rumor has it that Washington even turned one of them upside down himself) and a live-in ghost. The thanksgiving Spring rolls were life-changing. They sound weird, I know, but TRUST me- ah-mazing. Staff was attentive and pleasant.
July 04 · Regina HThis restaurant is an absolute gem! The history behind the place is incredible—truly a fascinating slice of the past that adds a unique charm to the overall experience. The food is delicious, the drinks are fantastic, and the desserts are simply outstanding. I visited during Christmastime, and the holiday decorations were stunning, creating a magical and cozy atmosphere. While the service is great for a standard restaurant, I feel there’s so much untapped potential to make the dining experience even more memorable. It would be wonderful if the staff shared more about the history of the location and interacted with guests to highlight the unique nuances and stories behind the place. It’s such a great opportunity to make diners feel like a part of the history!
