- Authentic New Jersey Sub Style: The subs are celebrated for embodying the classic Jersey style. This typically means thinly sliced, high-quality deli meats, fresh-cut vegetables like shredded lettuce, plump tomatoes, and perfectly shaved onions, all served on a soft, chewy roll and often finished with oil, vinegar, and a blend of spices. The meat is sliced super thin, a hallmark of traditional Jersey delis.

- Affordable Pricing: The pricing at Troops Subs is consistently described as "remarkably favorable" and among the cheapest for a high-quality sandwich in the area, appealing strongly to budget-conscious patrons, particularly college students.
- Fresh, High-Quality Ingredients: The dedication to using fresh, high-quality cold cuts, coupled with fresh vegetables and the perfect oil and vinegar dressing, is what gives the subs their legendary flavor and superior reputation.
- Comfort Food Focus: The menu, centered on delicious subs and a few hot items, falls squarely into the "comfort food" category, providing a quick, satisfying bite that hits the spot every time.
- No-Frills, Casual Vibe: The atmosphere is relaxed and casual, offering a classic American sandwich shop vibe. It's a place where the focus is strictly on the food, not on unnecessary decorative elements.
What is Worth Choosing
While the entire sub menu is popular, a few items stand out for their quality and reputation. The core selection of cold subs is where the shop truly shines, offering a variety of classic Italian combinations that are a rite of passage for any New Jersey sub enthusiast. The meats are layered expertly with provolone and fresh toppings, creating a perfect balance of flavor and texture.
When placing your order, here are some of the popular choices:
- Italian-Style Subs: The combinations featuring spiced ham, salami, provolone, capicola, and proscuittini are a strong choice, delivering that quintessential Jersey-Italian flavor. Options include Spiced Ham, Salami, And Provolone; Ham, Capicola, And Provolone; and the more elaborate Ham, Capicola, Proscuittini, Salami, And Provolone Cheese.
- Roast Beef: Highly praised by reviewers, the Roast Beef sub is an excellent option, often ordered with the add-on of savory gravy for an extra layer of richness.
- Turkey and Provolone: A fresh and popular choice for a lighter, but still generously portioned, sub.
- Hot Subs: Although the menu has streamlined over time, hot options like the classic Cheese Steak (with or without gravy) and Plain Steak are available for those craving a warm, hearty meal.
Regardless of what you choose, all cold subs are served 'Jersey style,' meaning they include lettuce, tomato, onions, oil, vinegar, and spices unless otherwise requested. This classic preparation is what locks in the fresh flavors and provides the satisfying bite that keeps customers coming back. The general consensus from long-time patrons is that the food has maintained its high quality over the years, securing Troops Subs’ status as a reliable local favorite for a great sub deal.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1This was my first time in there since it was known as Frills. Boy has it changed atmospherically. The quality of the food has not changed; it's still quite good, and the price comparative to other establishments is still remarkably favorable, but this place is just not the same. First of all, don't believe that outside sign. The sign depicted Troops as selling burgers, Texas Weiners, and a few other things. Disregard it! The menu apparently has diminished down to primarily just subs. They're still good, but the overall atmosphere inside has changed. It's pretty much a race to get your order in, prepare it, and get on to the next customer. The head counter man seemed to be a bit nervous and anxious, but he did take pains to make sure he was getting the customers' orders correct, which he did. It just felt like I was being rushed. I like the place, but without the burgers and dogs options, I just don't feel comfortable.
June 21 · Burt ShoobsTroops is phenomenal. You won't find a cheaper deal for a good sandwich. The place itself doesn't come with frills. It might look questionable from both the outside and once you're inside, but give it a shot! The owner was friendly and asked us many questions, as we were traveling. We were amazed by the size of the sandwiches. A half order is seriously plenty. It's a typical Jersey style sub for sure, with super thinly sliced meat. Troops is an experience in and of itself, and you'll get a great sandwich for a great deal! Oh, and free lollipops!
August 13 · Taylor LeBlancThe food and the people were both great. The place itself and the overall vibe/environment took away from the experience in my opinion.I ordered the tuna, as it came highly recommended, and it did not disappoint. It was fresh, delicious, and also cheap. Sandwiches these days will typically run you $12-15 but this was $6 and change I believe.I’d trust Troops to absolutely nail it on any simple sandwich.
July 02 · Eric HammerThe absolutely rudest person in business in clifton. If you want sweat dripping sandwiches go here and see how rude he is.Go across the street to Bagel Station insteadTHE BEST turkey BLT heroor next door to Henry’sWHERE THEY APPRECIATE YOUR BUSINESS.
June 21 · helene berriosThe sandwiches are pretty decent although the service was pretty terrible. The old man with the mask taking the order was rude and showed no interest in the customer. He hardly made eye contact at all and had a horrible attitude when taking my order. Show some better customer service.
