(This is a review from this summer.) Quality of food went down. I typically stop here whenever I visit home but I think that I will not return. The person taking orders was not for me. She seemed to have a very nasty attitude and pretended not to know what I was asking for because I didn’t ask for it in creole. Then she laughed with the person back there with her. I don’t speak Creole but I understand it. And that was very rude and inconsiderate to be made fun of. It shouldn’t matter where you are from if your money can be spent that should be the only motivation. Some people should not be in the food industry if they refuse to have GOOD customer service. I visited on two separate occasions (a week apart) and still the same attitude and the food wasn’t as fresh and properly prepared (as I am used to). After that encounter I will look for a new “favorite Haitian restaurant” to experience the nostalgia that used to receive. - Liia London

What is Worth Choosing

For first-time visitors or seasoned patrons of Caribbean food in New York, the standout reason to choose Yo Yo Fritaille is its unwavering commitment to authentic Haitian "fritaille." This is a place that celebrates the fried foods that are essential to Haitian street food and homestyle cooking. The combination of well-prepared, savory fried meats and the classic side pairings is the restaurant's main attraction.

A must-try item is the Tasso Cabrit (fried goat) or Tossa Boeuf (fried beef), both classic forms of fried meat that are typically marinated for flavor and cooked until tender and slightly crispy. These are traditionally served with fried plantains (known as banan peze or patat), and often accompanied by pikliz (spicy pickled vegetable relish) to cut through the richness of the fried food. The menu highlights Tasso Cabrit and Tossa Boeuf as primary protein options, and the generous portions are well-known to satisfy a hearty appetite.

For a more substantial rice dish, the availability of Riz Djon Djon (Haitian black rice) on the weekends provides an opportunity to experience one of Haiti's most celebrated and unique dishes. This rice, cooked with a special indigenous mushroom, is known for its earthy flavor and distinct dark color, making it a sought-after cultural delicacy. Pairing this rice with a piece of Griot (fried pork) is a classic and highly recommended Haitian feast.

The traditional breakfast options also offer a great start to the day. Dishes like Mais With Morue (cornmeal with saltfish) or Avoine (oatmeal) are traditional Caribbean morning staples that are both filling and flavorful. Even simple items like a quick Patate Fried (fried sweet potato) or Marinade (fried flour dough) serve as excellent small plates or quick bites throughout the day.

While a few recent reviews have pointed to some inconsistencies in both service and food quality, suggesting a fluctuating experience in terms of customer interaction and meal preparation freshness, the fundamental attraction remains the wide selection of classic and popular Haitian dishes. For local patrons, this spot is a cultural landmark for quick access to the comfort foods of the Caribbean. When visiting, focusing on the well-known Fritaille and Tasso offerings, and being clear with your order, is generally the best approach to ensure a positive and flavorful experience. Yo Yo Fritaille remains a key spot on Nostrand Avenue for those wanting to explore the deep flavors of Haitian comfort cuisine.
