68 Jay Street Bar Introduce
Introduction / Overview
In the highly polished, post-industrial chic landscape of DUMBO, Brooklyn—a neighborhood teeming with tech firms, art galleries, and stunning waterfront views—68 Jay Street Bar stands out as a genuine, unpretentious anchor. Known to locals as 'The OG' or simply '68,' this establishment is much more than just a place to grab a drink; it is a vital community hub and a celebrated cornerstone of DUMBO’s nightlife, famously established as the neighborhood’s first art bar back in 2002. For New Yorkers in the know, this bar offers a unique, mellow, and essential counterpoint to the city’s often overwhelming pace. It embodies the relaxed, artistic spirit that initially defined Brooklyn’s waterfront. Since its founding, it has successfully blended the old DUMBO charm with the new, catering to a diverse crowd of long-time residents, creative types, and new arrivals.
The atmosphere is a central element of its appeal. It strikes a rare balance: casual enough to feel like a true neighborhood dive, yet cozy and trendy enough to be an ideal setting for an intimate date or a focused conversation with a group of friends. Patrons frequently highlight the bar's ability to offer a "serene escape from the city's hustle and bustle," providing a quiet, inviting space for unwinding. With soft lighting and a deliberately relaxed vibe, the intimate ambiance makes it a perfect setting for quiet nights. This combination of a genuinely welcoming spirit and an appreciation for the arts—stemming from its artist-owner origins—solidifies its status as a local treasure, a far cry from the more transient, high-turnover venues often found in Manhattan.
Beyond the ambiance, 68 Jay Street Bar earns high marks for its core offerings. It boasts a reputation for excellent drinks, specifically highlighting a "great cocktails" program and an impressive "great beer selection." The talented bartenders are not just servers; they are crafters of delightful cocktails who, as one customer noted, often display "amazing energy," making guests feel instantly at home and even dispensing useful local tips with passion. For those seeking quality drinks at an accessible price point, the renowned happy hour specials provide an affordable destination without sacrificing quality. Furthermore, the inclusion of live performances ensures that the bar remains a dynamic, cultural space, offering both entertainment and relaxation.
In short, 68 Jay Street Bar is the quintessential Brooklyn local's bar. It’s a genuine spot that maintains its roots and integrity amidst a rapidly evolving neighborhood, making it an indispensable part of the New York City experience for those who value authenticity, great drinks, and a laid-back, community-focused environment.

July 30 · Colt RothBy chance we stumbled upon this hidden gem of a bar. (It was hot that day and all the main street big places were packed.) Here we could sample some local beers served by Jessy, a barman with amazing energy. Made us feel at home, dispencing tips about NYC with passion.
May 04 · Dennis VdhPlace looks beautiful but the experience was completely ruined by the bartender the minute my wife and I walked in here. Despite there only being 1 customer at the bar, we did not even get greeted with a smile or frieblndly glance. We awkwardly stood by the bar without our presence being acknowledged until we called her over to ask what there was to drink on tap or about happy hour specials. We tipped anyway but I have to say I have never felt so unwelcome at a bar in this part of town. We were prepared to kill 2-3 hours here before catching a later train, instead we just closed out our tab at the end of the first round and couldn't wait to finish up just so we can go somewhere more welcoming.
March 15 · Amaury BaezI was hoping we would happen across a hidden gem, and this was it for us. After nearly pissing ourselves crossing the Manhattan Bridge in the rain, we were desperately looking for a bathroom. Heading towards DUMBO already, we stopped into this bar. When we finished going to the bathroom and I shared with the bartender that we were grateful to have a place to pee he replied with "Well you don't have to order a drink if you just needed to pee". Major points earned with that comment. 1 drink turned into several hours there and he even charged our phones for us! Locals at the bar were friendly. Overall a fun experience.
April 11 · David J KanwisherGreat deals, beautiful location, hard working bar tender, but not a diverse crowd at all.
