Banzarbar Introduce
In a city where finding a truly unique bar can feel like a quest, Banzarbar offers an experience that is both a discovery and a delight. This isn't your average neighborhood pub; it is a true speakeasy, a hidden gem tucked away in Freeman Alley in the Lower East Side. The sense of adventure begins from the moment you seek it out, as you must first navigate a "winded path" through the alley and enter Freemans Restaurant. A host then guides you to the "hidden bar" on the second floor, a journey that sets a tone of intimacy and exclusivity. This "speakeasy" vibe, as noted by numerous reviewers, is what makes Banzarbar an incredibly special destination in New York City.
The atmosphere inside Banzarbar is as unique as its entrance. The bar is described as a "ship-themed" space, with decor that creates an elegant yet cozy ambiance reminiscent of an 18th-century seaside tavern. The space is small, with limited seating, which contributes to its intimate and "not noisy" vibe. This makes it a perfect setting for a date night, where you can have a private conversation and truly connect without the overwhelming noise of a typical bar. The nautical theme, from the menu to the décor, adds a playful and memorable element to the experience, transporting you away from the bustling streets of Manhattan to a cozy and secluded haven.
The drinks at Banzarbar are, by all accounts, nothing short of "excellent." Patrons rave about the quality of the cocktails, with one reviewer stating they "couldn't choose a favorite because they were all amazing." The menu is creative and thematic, centered around the historic "Banzar voyage," and the bartender is praised for not only serving the drinks promptly but also for explaining the history behind the bar and its thematic menu. This educational aspect adds a layer of depth to the experience, showing a genuine passion for their craft. In addition to a fantastic cocktail list, the bar offers a selection of other beverages, including beer, wine, and hard liquor, catering to all preferences. The expertise and creativity of the staff are key highlights, ensuring that every drink is a masterpiece.
Beyond the drinks, Banzarbar also offers a selection of food to complement the libations. The menu includes small plates like Oysters on the Half Shell, Lamb Skewers, and the "incredible" Blistered Shishito Peppers. This food-at-the-bar option is perfect for those who want a light bite to go with their cocktails. A unique and noteworthy menu item is "The Kraken," a dish for the truly adventurous. The combination of an incredible drinks menu with carefully selected food options makes Banzarbar a complete dining and drinking experience, rather than just a place for cocktails. The fast and attentive service is another highlight, with the staff being praised for their kindness and knowledge, ensuring that every visit is a pleasant one.
Banzarbar has successfully created a niche for itself as a high-end, intimate speakeasy that delivers on all fronts: atmosphere, drinks, service, and food. Its unique location and entrance add an element of fun and adventure, while the cozy, trendy, and upscale interior provides a perfect escape from the city. The bar’s reputation as a "hidden gem" is well-deserved, attracting a crowd that appreciates quality over quantity and a curated experience over a generic one. For New Yorkers in search of a special spot for a date, a celebration, or just a quiet night out with fantastic drinks, Banzarbar is a must-visit destination that lives up to its hype and then some.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1A true speakeasy! I forgot the name of the restaurant it’s in, but once you ask for Banzarbar the host will show you down a winded path to the hidden bar. The bar is ship-themed, from the deco to the menu, which was fun; the space is quite small and can’t fit very many parties, so it has an intimate vibe too. The drinks also tasted surprisingly good. All in all, a hidden gem of a speakeasy!
June 13 · L.Vibes: 9/10, Drinks: 10/10, Service: 10/10Honestly this place was amazing! We booked a reservation for Friday on the same day for 2. It’s a speakeasy and the host of the Freeman’s restaurant will take you the Banzarbar located on the 2nd floor. It’s a very cozy, dark, intimate vibe. Perfect for a date night. Not noisy either. The bartender promptly served us with water and the welcome drink, while also explaining the history of the bar and the thematic menu around the Banzar voyage. The drinks themselves were excellent. We ordered 3 each between me and my partner and we couldn’t choose a favorite because they were all amazing. We also ordered the Shisito peppers with a chipotle dip, which were incredible!

September 11 · Damahni JacksonWe were a party of 6. To start with, one of us booked a table for 4 and another one booked a table for 2. We thought that when we get to the bar we could ask to either be seated together, or at least be able to hand out with each other. The bartender was reluctant to accommodate, stating it is the bar's policy is not to allow more than 4ppl parties. When we told him that wasn't mentioned on the reservation details, he said: well - you should have figured it out given that you couldn't book a table for more than 4 ppl. He was extremely rude, seated the couple on the bar a bit distant from the 4ppl table (though the table was large enough to have 2 joining on a bench + one chair, plus there were couple's seats closer to the 4ppl party) and scolded us when we tried to hang out near each other to chat. Scolded, as in saying out loud: "Everyone should stick to their seats. No standing allowed". It was such a turnoff. despite our initial excitement and anticipation, we decided to stick to the one round of beverages and we left the bar after only one hour only (reservation was for 2 hours). That was a pity, as the place is pretty cool, and the vibe of the non-human elements was very appealing, despite the overpriced cocktails. I am convinced that there's a better way to communicate the bar's policy, and make the people feel welcome. Our party will probably not go to this place again, even if we are less than 4 ppl...
March 24 · Nitzan LevyThe bartenders and staff were so kind. They even customized our drinks for us according to our tastes! The quality of the drinks alone made the $$$ worth it but the personalized service was an added bonus. Will definitely be coming back soon to Banzarbar!
