Barely Disfigured Introduce
Barely Disfigured is more than just a cocktail bar; it's a meticulously crafted experience that stands out as a unique destination in Brooklyn’s vibrant nightlife scene. Named after a surrealist poem by Paul Éluard, this establishment on Smith Street in Carroll Gardens has embraced a fascinating history, creating a sultry, secretive, and artistic atmosphere. The decor, a sophisticated blend of 1920s French bordello vibes and surrealist touches, transports patrons to a different world. From the moment you step through its unassuming storefront, you are greeted by an intimate corridor leading to a long, swerving marble bar. This attention to detail has not gone unnoticed, with the bar being named one of the "Top 10 Best New Bars" on the East Coast by Tale of the Cocktail. It’s a place where every element, from the dim, moody lighting to the curated vintage decor, works together to create a captivating ambiance. The bar’s rich history, which nods to its past as a former "house of ill-repute," adds to its alluring charm without being crass, and a portion of its proceeds are even donated to the Urban Justice Center’s Sex Workers Project. This combination of a compelling backstory, a visually stunning environment, and a commitment to quality has made Barely Disfigured a favorite among locals and cocktail enthusiasts alike.
The core of Barely Disfigured’s appeal lies in its ambitious and delicate cocktails. The bar's mixologists are widely regarded as "masters of their craft," known for creating drinks with perfectly balanced and unique flavors. The menu, which includes signature cocktails with intriguing names like "The Dirty Old Man" and "The Harlot's Progress," showcases a passion for innovation and high-quality ingredients. Customers consistently rave about the "fabulous and so creative" cocktails, and some have even praised the “spectacular” clarified cocktails, a true mark of a skilled bar. Beyond the exquisite drinks, Barely Disfigured offers a carefully curated selection of food options, including share plates, a charcuterie board, and a highly-praised raw bar. The fresh oysters, for example, have been called "the best in the city," and are a perfect accompaniment to the sophisticated drinks. The bar also features a stunning 1,800-square-foot backyard garden, a luxurious outdoor oasis that offers a different atmosphere from the intimate interior. Complete with its own outdoor drinks and raw bar, the space is perfect for enjoying a drink during warmer months. The staff contributes significantly to the overall experience, with reviews frequently highlighting their friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable service. This makes the bar a welcoming and safe space for all, including the LGBTQ+ and transgender communities.
The overall vibe at Barely Disfigured is a harmonious blend of upscale elegance and comfortable, casual charm. It's an ideal spot for a romantic date night, an intimate gathering with friends, or simply a place to relax and enjoy a meticulously crafted drink. The bar's reputation has grown, and it is now a sought-after location for private events, celebrations, and even film shoots, having been featured in the HBO series "High Maintenance." The fact that it maintains an intimate, "first-come, first-served" policy on most nights speaks to its dedication to providing a high-quality, personal experience for every patron. The music and general ambiance are carefully curated to match the sophisticated, low-key vibe, creating a perfect backdrop for conversation and connection. The bar’s owners have been praised for their charismatic presence and willingness to engage with patrons, making the experience feel even more personal and special. ★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1This is an incredible bar! Second visit was better than our previous time. We had some spectacular cocktails - specifically the clarified cocktails. The owners were there and made recommendations as well as great conversation. The vibe at this bar is second to none. I recommend this spot for those into cocktails and those who just want to have a great night out at a unique bar.
July 07 · Seth KleinglassTerrific cocktail bar, nice vibe, very friendly staff, and the bartenders know what they’re doing. Masters of their craft is not an exaggeration. Perfectly balanced flavors is the norm.
September 07 · Michael JLovely bar, fantastic, diverse cocktails, friendly staff. Wonderful atmosphere late on a Friday night.
September 20 · Bobby BatachariaA large group of us went post a wedding. We had the groom in his tux & the bride in her full 1950’s gown and veil. The owners and staff could not be more professional and accommodating. We originally sat in the back patio area in a private corner with a comfortable couch. It was well decorated. The patio area closed and we were moved inside. The great drinks and delicious food flowed. Great way to end the evening.Highly recommend.
September 02 · Tracy DemarestVery unique bar, it has an urban French theme that is very artsy. Drinks are unique and good. Music was great they were playing modern French rap but it’s a classy place. Not gonna throw that extra star in - I said good, not great.
