Rutt's Hut Introduce
Introduction / Overview
For nearly a century, Rutt's Hut has stood as one of New Jersey’s most treasured culinary landmarks. Established as a humble roadside stand in 1928 by Royal "Abe" Rutt and his wife, Anna, this Clifton institution has evolved into a fortress-like restaurant that is legendary not just in the Garden State, but across the nation. While it is classified as a fast food restaurant and hot dog joint, Rutt's Hut offers a dining experience that is far more expansive and unique than the typical quick-service spot.
Rutt's Hut is best known, and globally celebrated, for its signature creation: the Ripper hot dog. This isn't your average frank; it’s a specially made hot dog that is deep-fried in hot oil until the casing cracks and splits open, resulting in a unique texture that is simultaneously crispy and snappy. This deep-frying process, which gives the dog its famous name, creates a flavor that has been nationally recognized, with several publications naming Rutt's Hut dogs as the best in the USA.
The success of the Ripper is only half the story. The other half lies in the homemade, proprietary relish. This famous topping, made from a secret blend of mustard, spices, chopped cabbage, carrots, and onions, gives it a light, tangy, sauerkraut-like flavor that perfectly complements the deep-fried dog.
Despite its fame and frequent appearances on the Food Network and Travel Channel, Rutt's Hut remains a casual, cozy, and historic place where locals and tourists alike feel at home. The establishment prides itself on consistency and tradition, with core menu items remaining virtually unchanged since 1928, a testament to its enduring appeal within the North Jersey food scene. Whether you are seeking a quick bite, a satisfying lunch, or a full dinner, Rutt's Hut provides a genuine taste of New Jersey culinary history.

What is Worth Choosing
When you visit Rutt's Hut, you are visiting a piece of New Jersey history, and the choice of food should reflect that legendary status. While the menu is extensive, the true, authentic Rutt's Hut experience centers on its deep-fried specialties and homemade sides.
The absolute essential item to order is the Classic Ripper. For the authentic New Jersey experience, order it with the two recommended toppings: a line of mustard and a generous dollop of the famous Homemade Relish. If you enjoy a crispier, more charred dog, try the Weller.
To complete the meal, local tradition suggests pairing the Ripper with the shop’s equally outstanding sides. The French Fried Onion Rings are highly recommended by regulars, described as perfectly crispy. The French Fries are also a great choice, noted for being crispy on the outside and fluffy inside. For a full, traditional comfort meal, consider ordering the Hot Dog Platter with Potato Salad and Cole Slaw for a comprehensive classic spread.
Finally, don't overlook the full diner menu, which offers surprisingly complex and hearty meals beyond the fast food fare. The Roast Long Island Duckling or the Broiled Sizzling Steak a la Romano demonstrates the restaurant's wide culinary range. For dessert, the Homemade Rice Pudding offers a comforting and satisfying end to a truly Jersey meal. Stick to the signature items for an outstanding experience that showcases the best of this iconic Clifton establishment.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I just love the nostalgia of this place. Hot dogs are great, so are the prices. Tonight I tried something different, just to see hey maybe it’s good. I had the duck, wasn’t bad but I wouldn’t get it again. Dry in most of the parts and not a lot of meat, more bones than anything. Looked amazing though, the presentation was good. Came with a side of mashed potatoes that was delicious and definitely made in house. But next time I’m sticking to the hot dogs and onion rings.
May 26 · Jenna GervasioWe sat in the bar area. No frills but our server was sweet and sat us at a bigger table so we could have some more space to spread out.I got a plain ripper and added the relish and mustard, amazing. I then went for a weller with their cooked onions, amazing but I preferred the plain with relish and mustard so I got another weller. I also got onion rings which were perfectly crispy and fries which were crispy and fluffy inside. The only thing I didn’t like was the pork sandwich with gravy. It tasted one note and kinda bland. I put the relish on it but it didn’t save it all too much. The rice pudding was homey and comfortingEverything else was outstanding!! Will definitely be back next time I’m in the area
April 16 · Traci AbbottThis is a local hole-in-the-wall spot. Old school. The hot dogs were good, not mind blowing, but great for the price and the vibe. Onion rings were whack, batter barely stayed on the onions! Would definitely not go out of my way to come here, but if I was driving by and feeling in the mood for a dirty dawg and fun atmosphere I’d come again. Warning: CASH ONLY.
August 15 · Alec RamirezA definite must stop if you are on the quest for a good hot dog! Their unique deep fried dogs rip open when cooked which is why they're called "rippers!" This cooking method gives them a unique outer texture and adds a layer of flavor as well. If you're bear Clifton, NJ it's worth the stop! The atmosphere of the building is also the sames as it was in the 1920's. Pretty cool vibe!
August 13 · Kevin HastingsStopped by for lunch and grabbed 2 rippers with chili and cheese. I was told to try the homemade relish and the spicy brown mustard. The hot dogs are on point and would have been perfect with a beer but I was on the clock . The staff seemed to be friendly and told me they had been here for 97 years. Seems like the place has a good tradition of patrons.
