DO NOT ORDER ANY OF THEIR MEAT PRODUCTS. 2 weeks go I went to get one of their items, the Orleans Chicken, (Chicken leg with bread surrounding it) and it was pretty disappointing, it looked good but the bread was stale and had no flavor to it, but I did not mind it since I had yet to try the chicken. As soon as I took a bite of the chicken, I tasted blood. I thought I had cut my mouth or something and quickly looked at myself on my phones camera and I wasn't, so I took a look at the chicken, and I saw the chicken was pink and raw and still had chicken BLOOD in it. I thought I may have been a bad day for them and decided it was a one time occurrence. I came back a week later and the same thing happened. Another week later, same thing. It was only this time that I finally took pictures and wrote a review, I know it was kinda of dumb of me to have bought it again but I decided to give them chances, I guess I was wrong every single time. So, I tried their other products, not only the meat products, and every single other bread item was stale, literally biting into plastic. You may think, oh it was probably because you left it out for too long, but I had it in the store and I ate it roughly 2 minutes after I picked it off the shelf. But that shouldn't happen considering that they have heated lights, right? Nope, the "heated lights" did not do a single thing, I even tested it and it wasn't even warm, it was room temperature, causing all the products to go stale around 2pm. None of this should be happening if they are a recognized bakery. Also, the item they advertise the most, the boba, is horrid, the boba tasted as if they cooked it for 2 minutes max and then couldn't wait any longer for cooked boba and put it in your drink.Below I added pictures of the raw chicken, I wrapped it in plastic wrap since the blood got on my table. This place is insane, I can not believe they are serving RAW CHICKEN. I am surprised the local food department has not been to this store yet. - Rihana Lin

Barley Time Introduce

Barley Time presents itself as a dynamic, multi-faceted establishment in the heart of Sunset Park, Brooklyn, catering to a wide range of culinary needs for the local New York community. More than just a traditional bakery, it functions as a comprehensive food and beverage hub, combining the offerings of a bakery, cake shop, coffee shop, and a bubble tea store all under one roof. This combination makes it a highly convenient stop for busy New Yorkers, whether you are seeking a quick breakfast, a unique celebratory cake, or a refreshing specialty drink.

The venue is recognized for offering a broad array of items, featuring an extensive menu that highlights Asian-style baked goods, often with unique flavor profiles like matcha, red bean, taro, and sesame. Customers have noted the spacious, clean store layout and the visual appeal of the well-stocked glass displays, which hold a multitude of interesting pastries and cakes. Specific products like the taro crisp bread and lemon cream bread have been praised for their quality, freshness, and balanced sweetness, suggesting that the core pastry and bread offerings hold strong value. The wide selection of sweet and savory breads and pastries, along with a significant drink menu, firmly positions Barley Time as a comprehensive option in Brooklyn’s diverse food landscape.

However, potential visitors should be aware of significant past customer feedback regarding certain items and service aspects. Specifically, there have been serious and repeated warnings against ordering any meat products due to safety concerns, including reports of raw chicken. Furthermore, other reviews indicate a potential inconsistency in the freshness of non-meat baked goods later in the day, with items reportedly becoming stale. Staff demeanor and a lack of fresh, warm bread service have also been noted as areas of disappointment. Prospective patrons are strongly advised to exercise caution with prepared savory items and prioritize the highly praised sweet breads and cakes, which appear to be the most consistent and recommended products.

What is Worth Choosing

For New Yorkers in the Sunset Park area, choosing Barley Time is primarily worthwhile for its specialty baked goods and extensive drink menu, provided the customer sticks to sweet, non-meat items.

If you are seeking quality Asian-style breads and pastries, particularly those with popular flavors like taro or lemon cream, this bakery offers products that have been described as fresh, fluffy, and perfectly balanced in sweetness. Their taro crisp bread is a strong standout recommendation. Furthermore, for celebrations, their cakes are a reliable choice for a fresh, non-dry option that avoids the excessive sweetness of many American counterparts, although they can be considered pricey for simpler flavors.

The store's second major draw is its function as a comprehensive cafe and bubble tea shop. The ability to grab an authentic piece of bread, a fresh cup of coffee, and a specialty drink like an osmanthus oolong or brown sugar bubble milk tea all in one convenient stop is a significant advantage in a busy urban setting. The extensive menu, variety of service options (including delivery and dine-in with Wi-Fi), and modern payment methods make it highly adaptable to a quick visit or a relaxed stay.

A Strong Cautionary Note: Given the severe and repeated negative feedback regarding the safety of meat products (specifically the raw chicken incidents) and the reported staleness of some items by early afternoon, patrons must approach their visit with awareness. It is strongly recommended to avoid all meat-filled items to ensure a safe experience and to plan a visit earlier in the day if possible to ensure the freshest selection of bread and pastries. By focusing on the celebrated sweet baked goods and specialty drinks, Barley Time can be a valuable and delicious local resource.
