Cecilia Introduce
In the iconic, history-rich landscape of St. Marks Place in New York's East Village, Cecilia emerges as a fresh and inviting destination for those seeking an elevated yet comfortable dining experience. This American restaurant, bistro, and wine bar, named after the owner's daughter, is designed to be a love letter to the city itself. It aims to capture the classic, old-world charm of the neighborhood while adding a modern, trendy flair. Cecilia isn't just a place to eat; it's a place to linger, a space for communal dining, and a hub for enjoying great food and drinks with a relaxed vibe.
The restaurant’s menu is a celebration of American bistro fare, often described as "zhuzhed-up comfort food." While a comprehensive menu is not provided, the information we do have suggests a variety of small plates, hearty main courses, and tempting desserts. Guests can start with something classic like Disco Tots or Calamari before moving on to a main dish like the Burger or Steak Au Poivre. The food has received rave reviews from some patrons, with one claiming it has "the best burger in NYC." However, other experiences have been mixed, with some finding certain dishes to be bland or cold, suggesting a variability that is worth noting.
Beyond the food, Cecilia is also a bar and wine destination. It is praised for its great cocktails and an extensive, carefully curated wine list that offers a variety of options by the glass and bottle. This makes it an ideal spot for a quick drink, a full meal, or a cozy evening out. The atmosphere is casual, cozy, and trendy, attracting a diverse crowd of locals and visitors. It's an establishment that caters to a wide range of tastes and dining occasions, from a solo lunch to a lively dinner with friends.

When considering a restaurant in the bustling East Village, Cecilia is a compelling choice for several key reasons. Its identity as a modern American bistro and wine bar fills a unique niche, offering a more refined dining experience without sacrificing the casual and cozy atmosphere that makes the neighborhood so special. The commitment to a great wine list and a creative cocktail program sets it apart from more traditional eateries, making it an excellent spot for a date night or a sophisticated social gathering.
While experiences with the food and service may vary, the high praise for certain dishes like the burger and banana split, as well as the positive overall "vibes," indicate that when Cecilia is at its best, it is truly exceptional. The restaurant's dedication to inclusivity and creating a safe space for all guests, including the LGBTQ+ community, is a strong reason to support this business. In a city where tight seating is common, the one review highlights a valid point, but it's important to remember that such challenges are part of the urban dining experience in a busy location like St. Marks Place.
Overall, Cecilia is worth choosing for its ambitious menu, great drinks, and a welcoming environment. The ability to grab a quick bite or settle in for a long meal, along with the convenience of reservations and outdoor seating, makes it a versatile and appealing option. ★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1New favorite restaurant. Food is insanely good. Vibes are even better. I want to keep going back just so I can try everything on the menu. 10/10 recommend the stuffed squid and ratatouille. Also has best burger in NYC. You gotta split the split - the banana split.
August 25 · Antonia SteinbergHad a terrible experience here. When we first arrived, the seating is so tight the staff expects you to squeeze in between two tables that is barely 2 inches apart. I understand it’s nyc and we are used to tight seating but eating shoulder to shoulder with strangers to the point your arms are touching is not a pleasant experience. And diners should not have to physically move heavy tables multiple times to try to get in and out of their seat. At least one table can be taken out so diners don’t feel like the spit from the people next to them is flying into their food. Second, we came as a group of all POC and felt the all-white staff was very brash. Clearly they are new or there are serious communication issues. Multiple things were forgotten and one of the female staff members was extremely unpleasant. Her face looked as if she would rather be anywhere but there. This is disappointing as I feel in the last few years the East Village is catering more and more to a certain demographic and this is not my first unpleasant experience recently in the neighborhood. Lastly, the food is extremely overpriced for the quality. Certain dishes were bland and cold, even the fries could’ve been better at the McDonald’s a few blocks down.
September 11 · Michael YI went because I used to go to Yaffa Cafe in the 80s. (Cecelia is in that old space.) I was surprised to find it recaptures the vibe of that time perfectly. A wide variety of interesting people, comfortably chatting and laughing and enjoying great food. I can vouch for the burger and the risotto and the hot fudge sundae. Oh and the calamari. And the fries! But the "scene" is just so right, the staff is cool as can be, but also so nice and either actually happy to work there or excellent at pretending. The owner even strolled through glad handing with each of the tables and making people laugh. My friends and I felt like we were in the old East Village, the one we so adored and milked for all it was worth.Cecelia is time travel with great food in a perfect space.Thank you.
June 22 · David HorowitzThe hash browns are perhaps the best I’ve ever had. Creative and tasty. Also good beer selection. Enjoyed the chicken sandwich but the “Cajun gravy” was red(?) and a little bland so I’m doubting it’s authenticity 😅. A couple tweaks need to be made so it doesn’t feel like it’s a fleece like a tomato on the egg sandwich, larger portions on the sides. or just smaller plates!! Service was incredibly friendly and welcoming, would definitely try again :)
October 05 · Harry KaufmanLove this spot, great vibe and excellent service! Highly recommend the chickpea fries, the grilled squid, and the chicken. Great drink menu too.
