Kenkey Hut Introduce
---
For New Yorkers eager to explore the rich, diverse flavors of West African cuisine, **Kenkey Hut** on Webster Avenue in The Bronx offers a truly specialized and authentic experience. This establishment operates as both an **African restaurant** and a **Grocery store**, cementing its role as a vital hub for the local Ghanaian community and a must-visit for curious foodies across the city.
The name says it all: Kenkey Hut specializes in *Kenkey*, the famous Ghanaian delicacy. Kenkey is a staple food made from fermented maize dough, typically wrapped in corn husks or banana leaves and steamed. It is beloved for its **soft yet firm texture** and a distinctive, **slightly sour (tangy) flavor** resulting from the fermentation process. This unique taste is compared to the subtle acidity and pungency found in Ethiopian *injera* or described as an "overstuffed tamale" by those new to the dish.
What truly sets Kenkey Hut apart is its commitment to freshness. Customer reviews emphasize that the Kenkey is **"literally being made in front of you"** and is served **"HOT from the steamer,"** guaranteeing the optimal quality of this labor-intensive traditional food. Kenkey, as a carbohydrate staple, is meant to accompany robust, flavorful dishes. While specific meal pairings at Kenkey Hut may vary, traditionally, it is served alongside rich accompaniments like **fried fish** (available in various sizes), **spicy pepper sauce** (*shito*), or various stews and soups, creating a **wonderful textural accompaniment** to any main protein or vegetable dish. This dedication to authentic preparation makes Kenkey Hut a cornerstone of Ghanaian cuisine in the New York metropolitan area.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1It's a shame that trying to order from here is such a pain. The kenkey is freshly made and nice but their phone number only goes through maybe once a year and on those 2 occasions in a span of 2 years, when I spoke to the lady abt delivery, she said she was traveling and couldn't mail it. She asked that I check in with her after a month, it's been more than 2 months and I still haven't gotten hold of her yet. I can only imagine how much more this business would grow if they had a good and stable mailing system. This is such a shame
July 13 · Richlove AsabeaKenkey Hut specializes in its name sake Ghanaian delicacy, Kenkey, which consists of fermented maize pudding wrapped in banana leaves. While an acquired taste, the flavor and textures of Kenkey are unique- think overstuffed tamale with the acidity and subtle pungency of injera. Much like injera, Kenkey is meant to accompany other dishes as a carb stable, rather than being consumed by itself. The Kenkey here is literally being made in front of you and comes out HOT from the steamer and provides a wonderful textural accompaniment to fish, stews, veggies, whatever you desire
November 15 · Kevin XuGHANA 🇬🇭Eat the World NYC review:For the better part of a decade, the fermented corn flour staple kenkey has had its home here at Kenkey Hut in Fordham Heights. A typical meal with it consists of fried fish and spicy pepper sauce, which just about rounds out the list of available items here. Grab all three and take it home or across the street to sit down in the park.
September 24 · Jared CoheeA lifesaver! As a Black American married to a Ga man, there’s no way I can make kenkey myself, lol! While I am able to make various stews, I didn’t believe my husband could feel fully himself in America without his kenkey, haha. We came across this establishment via word of mouth on the east river ferry from fellow Ghanaians a few years ago. My husband says their kenkey is good enough to rival Jamestown kenkey and that is saying a lot! I appreciate that the kenkey is always hot, soft and ready to eat! Her fish and shrimps are also nice. 😊
December 31 · Kesha MNCHave the best kenkey around but their communication with customers on happenings at the venue is terrible. Been closed for days now and no one knows when they will be opened for business. Phone number is useless as mailbox is full and no one responds when you call. Please update your times fo operations. Continue providing us the best kenkey in the bronx.
