I was very disappointed with my experience at this restaurant. The drinks were the only good part, but the food was terrible. I ordered the dibi lamb, which was just okay, and my friend ordered the fish. The fish was soggy, loaded with ginger, and basically inedible—she didn’t even eat it. Despite that, we both ended up sick with severe stomach pain after the meal. To make things worse, the bill was wrong. The food was supposed to cost $50, but we were charged an extra $20. Getting sick, being overcharged, and being served such low-quality food is unacceptable. I do not recommend this place to anyone. - dija T

Keur Coumba Introduce

Introduction / Overview

Nestled in the bustling heart of Harlem's Little Senegal, Keur Coumba offers a culinary experience that aims to transport diners to the vibrant flavors and rich traditions of West Africa. This restaurant, specializing in Senegalese and West African cuisine, is a key part of the neighborhood's culinary landscape. With a menu that features a wide array of authentic dishes, from daily lunch specials to hearty dinner entrées, Keur Coumba aims to provide a genuine taste of the region for both local residents and curious tourists.

The restaurant's menu highlights traditional dishes that are staples in West African households. For lunch, patrons can explore a variety of offerings such as Thiebou Djeun, a classic rice and fish dish, or the popular Yassa Guinaar, a chicken dish marinated in lemon and onions. The dinner menu expands on these options, featuring grilled specialties like Dibi Guinar (grilled chicken) and Dibbie Senegal Dinner (lamb). The restaurant also serves a range of other dishes, including Mafe Peanut, a rich peanut butter stew. The inclusion of Halal food makes it an accessible option for a broader community, ensuring that its authentic flavors can be enjoyed by many.

Keur Coumba aims to provide a quick and convenient dining experience, catering to those on the go with its takeout and delivery services. The atmosphere is described as casual, cozy, and trendy, making it a suitable spot for a wide variety of customers, including college students, large groups, and tourists looking for an authentic and relaxing meal. It also offers a selection of beverages, including traditional juices like Bissap and Bouye, alongside more common soft drinks and bottled water.

However, it's worth noting that customer experiences can be inconsistent. Some reviews highlight significant dissatisfaction with food quality, service, and billing accuracy. For example, some customers have expressed disappointment with dishes being served reheated, overcooked, or with a lack of flavor, and there have been reports of incorrect charges on bills. This inconsistency is a recurring theme in some public feedback. While the menu promises a rich and authentic experience, it is important for prospective diners to be aware of the mixed reviews regarding the execution and consistency of the food.

What is Worth Choosing

When considering Keur Coumba, it is important to weigh the potential for an authentic West African culinary experience against some of the documented inconsistencies in food quality and service. For a New Yorker looking to explore the flavors of Senegal, the restaurant's menu provides a comprehensive look at the cuisine, with staples like Thiebou Djeun and Yassa Guinaar. The extensive menu, which includes everything from daily lunch specials to dinner entrées, offers a wide range of choices for those interested in trying new dishes.

The restaurant's offerings of Halal food and its flexible service options—including delivery, takeout, and dine-in—are definite points in its favor. These features make it a convenient and accessible option for a variety of occasions, whether you're planning a quick solo meal or a group dinner. The atmosphere, described as casual and cozy, can provide a comfortable setting for a relaxed meal.

However, it is crucial for a potential diner to be aware of the negative reviews that detail issues such as food quality, incorrect billing, and inconsistency. These experiences, which include food being described as inedible, soggy, or overly salty, are significant points of concern. The reports of customers getting sick after eating and being overcharged on their bills are serious issues that should not be overlooked. While it may have once been a highly-regarded establishment, the recent negative feedback suggests that the quality may have declined.

In conclusion, choosing Keur Coumba presents a risk-reward scenario. On one hand, you have the opportunity to taste traditional and authentic West African dishes that are not easily found everywhere. On the other hand, you face the possibility of a disappointing experience with inconsistent food quality and service issues. Given the conflicting reviews, it might be a place to visit with caution, perhaps starting with a quick and simple order to gauge the quality for yourself. For a New Yorker who prioritizes a consistently positive dining experience and a reliable outcome, it may be prudent to explore other well-regarded options in the area first.
