Kossar's Bagels & Bialys Introduce
Kossar's Bagels & Bialys holds a place in the rich history of New York City’s legendary bagel and bialy scene. Located in a bustling part of the city, this establishment has been a destination for those seeking traditional baked goods for decades. It's a place that evokes a sense of nostalgia for many long-time residents, standing as a testament to the city’s enduring culinary traditions. The reputation of New York bagels is a global phenomenon, and places like Kossar's are part of the reason why. A genuine New York bagel is a dense, chewy delight, with a distinctive crust that is the result of a specific boiling and baking process. The bialy, a cousin to the bagel, offers a different experience—a soft, chewy roll with a depression in the center, often filled with onions or other savory toppings. For many New Yorkers, a visit to a bagel shop is a ritual, a morning habit that sets the tone for the day. It’s an integral part of the local culture, and exploring different bagel shops is a hobby for many. Kossar's, with its storied history, is certainly a spot on that list of places to try. The atmosphere of a classic bagel shop is often no-frills, focusing on the quality of the product itself. It's about efficiency and a no-nonsense approach to getting a delicious, fresh baked good into the hands of a hungry customer. While opinions on any establishment can vary, the foundational product at Kossar's, the bagel itself, is often the subject of positive commentary from those who appreciate a well-made baked item.
Navigating New York City can be an adventure, and finding a local gem like Kossar's Bagels & Bialys adds to the excitement. The shop is conveniently located at 37 W End Ave, New York, NY 10023. This address places it in the vibrant Upper West Side, an area known for its residential charm, cultural institutions, and proximity to Central Park. The accessibility of this location is a major plus for anyone living or working in the area, as well as for those visiting from other parts of the city. The New York City subway system is the most efficient way to get around, and several lines have stations within a reasonable walking distance of the shop. This makes it an easy stop for a quick breakfast or a grab-and-go lunch. Bus routes also service the West End Avenue area, providing additional options for public transit. While driving in Manhattan is always a challenge, the location is situated on a major street, and for those who choose to drive, it is best to be prepared for the typical urban parking difficulties. However, the convenience of the public transportation network makes a personal vehicle unnecessary for a visit. The neighborhood itself is worth a stroll, with its beautiful brownstones and tree-lined streets, making a trip to Kossar's part of a pleasant urban walk.
Kossar's Bagels & Bialys offers a straightforward selection of services focused on providing fresh baked goods to its customers.
Bagel and Bialy Sales: The core of their business is the sale of a wide variety of bagels and bialys, available plain or with various toppings. This includes everything from classic plain bagels to more specialty flavors.
Cream Cheese and Spreads: To complement their bagels, they offer a selection of cream cheeses and other spreads. This is a crucial component of the traditional bagel experience, and customers can choose from different flavors.
Sandwiches: The shop prepares bagel sandwiches, allowing customers to choose from a variety of fillings to create a quick and satisfying meal. These can be made to order with eggs, lox, or other common sandwich ingredients.
Takeout Service: As is common for a New York City bagel shop, the primary service model is takeout. Customers can place their order at the counter and receive it quickly to enjoy on the go.
Coffee and Beverages: To accompany the baked goods, the shop offers a selection of hot and cold beverages, including coffee, a staple pairing with a bagel breakfast.
The features and highlights of any local establishment are what give it its character. For Kossar's, these points are particularly important for understanding the full customer experience.
Historic Name: Kossar's is a name with a long history in the New York bagel scene. This legacy is a significant part of its identity and appeals to those who appreciate a place with roots in the city's past.
Bialy Specialization: While bagels are a staple, the shop is known for its bialys. This is a key differentiator, as not all bagel shops offer this traditional Jewish baked good. For those who enjoy a bialy, this is a significant feature.
Quality of Baked Goods: Based on customer feedback, the bagels themselves are often considered to be of good quality. This is the foundation of any good bagel shop, and the taste of the bagels is a highlight for many patrons.
No-Frills Experience: The shop provides a very traditional, no-frills service model. This can be seen as a highlight for those who prefer a quick, transactional experience focused purely on the product, without the added complexity of a sit-down cafe.

Kossar's Bagels & Bialys Reviews
I live nearby and have gotten many bagels here over 4 years but it’s been getting progressively worse - and after today, I’m done! They’re stingy AF with the cream cheese - barely a smear on the bagels, which feels cheap, especially when their prices are already above what you’ll find at better spots. The staff more often than not is either rude or completely fed up, which makes the experience even less worth it. Sad to say it, but there are plenty of other places that are friendlier, better priced, and actually give you a PROPER cream cheesed up bagel. The only reason this isn’t a 1 is because the bagels themselves are actually tasty.
June 01 · Ari TStopped for some bagel and to try the bialy. The baked goods are cold and not warmed up for you and they were basically rock hard it was really difficult to finish. Went in at breakfast time and there wasn’t a crowd or a line.
May 25 · Dawn ChristonStopped here for breakfast, everyone was really nice and service was quick! Lox bagel was good but a little light on cream cheese (although packed with all other toppings!)
August 16 · Liza PetersonArrived at 6:49pm, Google says closes at 7pm. Door was locked and shutdown procedure had started. Fresh goods remained and weren't available for sale.
September 03 · Joey CeraThe ladies of Kossars are STELLAR. How nice to be greeted with such smiling and friendly faces everyday. Truly a pleasure walking in here unlike some other places you dread since you seem like a burden. Even when they are slammed still greeted with the same kindness. Only reason for one less star are the prices. So steep. Thank you for the amazing service always.
