Ernesto's Introduce
Ernesto's is a true culinary gem in New York's vibrant Lower East Side, bringing the soulful and refined flavors of Basque Country directly to the heart of the city. Opened by Chef Ryan Bartlow, a New York native with extensive experience in Michelin-starred kitchens in Spain, Ernesto's is more than just a restaurant; it's a neighborhood canteen that celebrates a love for Basque food and culture. The atmosphere is a perfect blend of cozy, romantic, and upscale, creating an inviting space that feels both sophisticated and welcoming. With a design that pays homage to the Art Nouveau architecture of San Sebastian, from the custom lighting fixtures to the brass bar, the restaurant transports you to another place while still feeling like a quintessential New York dining experience. It's a place where you can pop in for a quick bite and a glass of wine, or settle in for a grand, celebratory dinner with friends, all while enjoying an atmosphere that is at once boisterous and warm.
The menu at Ernesto's is a thoughtful expression of Basque cuisine, focusing on seasonal ingredients and classic techniques. The "Para Picar" (small bites) section is an excellent starting point, with traditional options like Gildas, a perfect skewer of pickled peppers, olives, and anchovy, and various Croquetas. Diners consistently recommend these traditional starters over the mains, and they are perfect for pairing with a glass of wine from the restaurant's extensive list. The "Entradas" and "Platos Principales" sections offer a wide variety of dishes to explore, from the rich and hearty Arroz Meloso de Conejo (creamy rice with rabbit) to the expertly prepared Rape a la Parrilla (grilled monkfish). A unique and popular dish is the Paleta Iberico con Chips, which features slices of high-quality Iberico ham layered over house-made potato chips. The dessert menu is also a highlight, with the Tarta de Queso (Basque cheesecake) being a fan favorite.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Sat at the Chef’s counter in the smaller dining room. Very large and interesting wine menu with lots of Spanish wines! Love the smaller bites, I think the traditional options to start such as the tortilla, croquetas, and jamón are the best options over the mains. I would definitely come back to sit outside and enjoy some wine and smaller bites!
June 14 · Maria YuLong time fan but finally visited for the first time on my birthday. The staff was amazing and made for a really really fun dining experience, especially our server Matt and (please forgive me for not remembering) our beverage director who helped us pick out some lovely wine.I was cranky when I came in and left extremely happy.Delicious food, great vibe, and exceptional hospitality. I’ll be back for it all very soon.
February 23 · Matthew Roulan- Suckling pig meat is a little dry tbh.- Tapas is ok but overpriced compared to same level of Spanish restaurant in town.- Many bugs if you eat at the outdoor patio. I have to wave the whole night to keep the bugs away.- Waiters seem unhappy or tired from the face looking.
June 21 · sOur friends insisted on taking us here while my husband and I visited the city this past weekend. We usually don't frequent places like this; they're too trendy, usually too loud, and the decor is all the same. Track lighting in the kitchen, along with tables that are too close together, and a server with RBF? Dime a dozen. Despite this, I went with an open mind (pinkie promise, I did), and I still left disappointed. The food was alright, some of it was really good, but it was dampened by the mid service. Our table didn't feel very welcomed by our server nor did we feel like we had an exceptional experience overall. If a restaurant charges this much for such small plates, I expect top-tier service. Who's in charge here? And more importantly, why are they okay with guests leaving feeling like they’re just another check to clear?
August 19 · Brett CarterThe restaurant backs up its reputation with actual quality. Worker care was remarkably impressive! We celebrate our discovery of Ernesto's! They clearly spend more for better ingredients. You'll leave without a single complaint.
