L'Antagoniste Introduce
Nestled in the heart of Brooklyn's Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood, L'Antagoniste is a celebrated French restaurant that has captivated locals and visitors alike with its authentic cuisine and enchanting atmosphere. Far from a mere eatery, this establishment is a culinary destination that prides itself on creating a warm, cozy, and romantic setting, making it the perfect spot for a memorable date night or a special celebration with a group. The restaurant is known for its upscale yet inviting ambiance, which makes every visit feel like a special occasion.
L'Antagoniste stands out for its commitment to classic French gastronomy, elevated by a focus on fresh, high-quality, and often locally sourced ingredients. As evidenced by a wall displaying its local farm suppliers, the restaurant brings a farm-to-table philosophy to its classic dishes. The menu is a carefully curated selection of French staples, from delightful appetizers to impressive main courses. Patrons rave about the appetizers, such as the Moules (mussels in a flavorful broth) and the Planche de Charcuterie Et Fromage, a selection of cured meats and cheeses perfect for sharing. The "Le Cliché" featuring escargots, frog leg tempura, and beef bone marrow, showcases the chef's innovative take on traditional flavors.
The main courses are the true stars of the menu, offering a range of expertly prepared dishes. The Steak Frites is a standout, praised by customers for its thick, flavorful cut of prime NY strip steak and perfectly crispy fries. The Moules Et Frites also receives high marks for its classic flavor profile. For those seeking something truly special, the Le Canard à L'orange (duck a l'orange) and Poulet Aux Champignons (chicken with mushrooms) are excellent choices. L'Antagoniste also caters to vegetarian diners with its Plats Végetariéns, ensuring a sophisticated option for every palate. The kitchen's commitment to quality is evident in every bite, from the incredibly tender Zhee Hamburger to the robust flavors of the Butcher's Recommendation.
A great French meal is incomplete without a fine beverage, and L'Antagoniste delivers with an impressive and extensive beverage program. The great wine list is a major highlight, curated to perfectly complement the food menu. From a wide array of excellent bottles to a well-rounded selection of glasses, the wine list caters to both casual drinkers and connoisseurs. In addition to wine, the restaurant offers a full bar with beer, cocktails, and hard liquor, as well as happy hour drinks, making it a great destination for a pre-dinner cocktail or a relaxing drink with friends. And for the perfect ending to a meal, the great desserts menu, including a decadent Chocolate Mousse Cake and a delicate Passion Fruit Dacquoise, are not to be missed.
L'Antagoniste’s atmosphere is consistently described as a perfect blend of cozy, romantic, trendy, and upscale. The intimate setting, combined with exceptional table service and a knowledgeable staff, creates a memorable dining experience. ★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Excellent, cozy restaurant. Great for a date night. Romantic. Excellent wine selection and the food was divine! And these were just the appetizers. I forgot to photograph the actual meal. Service of course was great! You can’t have great food and poor service. They earned their stars! You should rsvp though!
February 28 · Gloria SandifordMy boyfriend and I decided to drop in without a reservation, and we were fortunate to be seated just in time for the busy dinner rush. The restaurant was fully booked, but the service was exceptional. Our waitress was fantastic—she provided clear and concise descriptions of the menu items, making our choices easy.I was starving so ordered the steak tartare since it would come to the table quickly since it’s raw. The presentation of it looks very pretty just when I scooped up some to put on a piece of bread the egg yolk popped and started dripping nice and evenly. I opted for the burger cooked medium rare, and it was incredibly tender, practically melting in my mouth. The burger looked substantial, a testament to its lack of added preservatives. My boyfriend chose the steak frites, and the steak was impressively thick and flavorful, showcasing the freshness of the ingredients. One wall proudly displays their local farm suppliers, which speaks to their commitment to quality. The frites, a nod to their French inspiration, were perfectly crispy and absolutely lived up to my expectations. You can truly taste the freshness in every bite. Don’t hesitate—make a reservation and experience this gem for yourself!
November 03 · Dayna ConcepcionI’ve been coming to l’antagoniste for half a dozen years now and they are consistently delightful. Atmosphere is lovely. Service has always been great. And the food is quality. It’s a special occasion place for me but I also have loved getting their whole chicken for pickup. Enjoy!
August 14 · Hannah DalportoOne of our favorite restaurants in Brooklyn! Classical French cuisine, all farm to table ingredients, served in a cozy environment. Our family comes here for all different kinds of special occasions and celebrations.
December 28 · Phil P.The food was good, the service was ok. Nice place to eat if you are in the area. I like the steak tartare but in my opinion the portion was too big, the burger was ok but didn’t have that special something to make it memorable, the salad was not special. But overall the flavors were on point.
