La Gran Via Bakery Introduce
Introduction / Overview
Nestled in the heart of Union City, New Jersey, La Gran Via Bakery stands as a beloved institution, serving the local community and the wider North Hudson area with authentic, traditional Cuban baked goods for over four decades. As a dedicated Bakery, La Gran Via has built its reputation on maintaining the rich flavors and time-honored recipes of its Cuban roots. Since 1981, this family-owned and operated establishment has aimed to maintain the customs and traditions of its culture, creating a welcoming atmosphere for the entire Hispanic community and all New Jersey residents seeking a taste of genuine Cuban comfort.
The primary draw for many patrons is the wide array of classic Cuban pastries, particularly the famous pastelitos. These flaky, buttery delights—often filled with savory ingredients like beef or sweet fillings like guava and cheese—have become a staple in the lives of long-time customers. Beyond the pastries, La Gran Via offers a variety of breads, sandwiches, and rich desserts, making it more than just a bakery; it’s a full-service culinary stop. The establishment is perfectly set up for a Quick visit and is a popular spot for a satisfying Breakfast, where many locals start their day with a strong cup of Cuban Coffee and a fresh pastry.
It is important for new and returning New Jersey customers to note that while the bakery has a long history and a loyal following, recent customer feedback has pointed to potential inconsistencies in both the quality of certain long-standing products and the customer service experience. Reviews mention a noticeable difference in the taste and size of the iconic pastelitos and instances of staff being perceived as rude or dismissive. While the ordered items are still generally described as good, the community's passion for the bakery's history comes with a clear hope for the restoration of consistent, high-quality products and attentive, friendly service that matches the establishment’s four-decade legacy.

What is Worth Choosing
What is most worth choosing at La Gran Via Bakery is the opportunity to savor a genuine piece of Cuban culinary tradition right here in New Jersey. The primary reason to visit is the specific, authentic items that are hard to find elsewhere.
The undisputed must-try is the Pastel de Guayaba y Queso—the guava and cheese pastry. This is the item that generations of New Jersey locals have grown up with and for which the bakery is most famous. Even while customers express a desire for product consistency to return to its historical best, the core of the offering remains highly sought after.
Beyond the pastries, a great choice is to build an authentic Cuban breakfast or mid-morning snack. This means pairing a classic pastry or a savory empanada (Beef or Chicken) with a powerful, freshly brewed Café Con Leche or a shot of Espresso. This combination offers a perfect slice of Cuban life and a satisfying start to any day. The bakery also excels at specialty items like the Flan or a slice of Tres Leches Cake, which are excellent options for a dessert or a celebratory treat.
However, local customers are encouraged to visit with an awareness of the recent feedback regarding customer service. While the food itself, even with minor changes, is still good, the overall experience can be significantly impacted by staff interaction. Choosing La Gran Via is choosing a legacy of flavor and tradition, and New Jersey patrons are best served by focusing on the excellent Takeout or Delivery options for a quick purchase, and by being clear and direct when placing more complex orders, such as catering or custom cakes. The commitment to authentic Cuban tastes is what keeps this Union City gem a valuable part of the local food scene.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I’ve been coming to this bakery for my entire life, the pastelitos have been the same for at least 25 years but today I stopped by and I can definitely tell that the quality is different. They are smaller and the guayaba does not taste like guayaba, just sugar. I’d rather pay a little more to have the same pastelitos I’ve always loved.
August 23 · Tabitha YiI sent my mom a couple days ago to place an order for today and the staff was very rude and dismissive to her. My mother has never ordered catering items from here and she had a lot of questions and the person helping her seemed bothered by her. Today I went to go pick up what she ordered , I was ignored. A woman that seemed like a regular there cut the line and got her pick up order before me , once the attention was on me the staff went back to looking bothered and annoyed. Although the things i ordered were good , i probably won’t go back due to the lack of customer service , I’d rather take my money to another small business
June 01 · Y DSpoiled pastries brought home made a complaint and was told on the phone that I would be refunded and when I came to return the rotten pastries I was confronted by a very rude female manager or worker there telling me that there will be no refund ! Very angry with this place and will be notifing our health department on behalf of what they are selling here !! I would highly advise to all to be very aware of what you purchase here !!I HAVE recently spoken to the owner/ manager about my incident here and we have resolved our differences he is a gentlemen and I would like for people to know that this is being Resolved with the customer service here thankyou for hearing my side of this !
July 29 · Jimmy KatayamaThis bakery is geniusss!!!! I wanted a chess themed cake for my chess loving pre-teen son and this bakery absolutely rocked it. The attention to detail was impeccable. Given the fact I asked them to make it in a one day’s notice. Bouldering the cake with KitKat was a genius idea too. The cake tasted as yummy and as fresh as it looked. Hands down the best bakery in the neighborhood. You made my son so happy.
August 05 · Hemal TrivediWhat a wonderful local delight. As authentic of a baked sweets selection as you can get, this bakery is definitely a small gem in the neighborhood. Empanadas, bread pudding and bread with butter (pan con mantequilla) with a cup of Cafe Con leche, you're good to go! And they accept mobile payment methods (awesome).
