Japanese restaurant ★4.0 (133)·$100+

36 W 26th St, New York, NY 10010, USA

4.0
It has been one of most japanese restaurants as per my limited experience. Starting from the low visible sign and entrance, it gives the humble feeling in first place. The decoration inside and even the height of the tables were designed to give the feeling of being in Japan. The set menus are the good choices to taste almost all dishes but in much smaller portions of course. We picked two sets for 2 adults and 1 kid and added 1 edamame, 1 hot soba and that was more than enough at the end of the dinner. The plates were more than good but one pinh less than the wowww. One thing that did not fit into our setup was the availability of wasabi in the sushis so you don’t have any option not to add wasabi. Prices are reasonable. One last recommendation should be that the staff could tell a bit more about the food since most of them can be unfamiliar with the people who don’t know so much about Japanese cuisine. Enjoy! - Hakan Delibalta

TOWA is a Japanese restaurant that brings an authentic and refined dining experience to New York City’s bustling NoMad neighborhood. Stepping inside this hidden gem feels like a subtle journey to Japan itself. With a low-visible sign and a thoughtfully designed interior, the restaurant creates a humble and cozy feeling from the very first moment. This isn't just a place to grab a meal; it's a dining destination where every detail, from the decor to the table height, is curated to transport you to a tranquil and traditional setting. Led by a team with experience from Michelin-starred restaurants, TOWA focuses on traditional Japanese cooking methods and seasonal ingredients, offering a modern take on classics that appeal directly to New York palates.

The culinary philosophy at TOWA is rooted in the art of Japanese kaiseki, a multi-course meal that emphasizes seasonal ingredients and a balance of flavors and textures. While the restaurant offers a la carte options, the core experience is centered around its course menus and omakase, allowing diners to fully immerse themselves in the chef's artistry. The menu showcases a variety of cooking techniques—fried, grilled, raw, and boiled—which are all essential elements of traditional kaiseki cuisine. This approach provides a comprehensive and educational culinary journey, making it a great choice for both seasoned enthusiasts of Japanese food and those looking to learn more about the cuisine. The commitment to using high-quality ingredients, from fresh seafood to premium sake, ensures a dining experience that is both elegant and unforgettable.

TOWA’s unique atmosphere and focus on genuine hospitality set it apart from other Japanese restaurants in the city. While the food is undoubtedly the star, the service plays a crucial role in the overall experience. The staff, knowledgeable and attentive, are on hand to guide diners through the menu, offering insights that can enhance the appreciation of each dish. This blend of exceptional food, authentic ambiance, and attentive service creates a dining experience that is well worth seeking out for a special occasion, a romantic dinner, or even a sophisticated solo meal.

Why is TOWA worth choosing? For New Yorkers, it offers a refreshing and authentic Japanese dining experience that is distinct from the city’s many sushi bars. The focus on kaiseki-inspired cuisine and traditional cooking methods provides a unique and elevated culinary journey. While some customers have had mixed opinions on specific dishes or pricing, the general consensus is that the overall experience, from the authentic ambiance to the refined menu, is highly worthwhile. The recommendation to try the omakase over the course menu for a truly exceptional experience points to the chef's expertise and the quality of ingredients used.
