Magela's Haitian Restaurant is an excellent place to dive into the savory world of Haitian cuisine, and several items are absolute must-tries for local New Jersey diners. The Griyo (Fried Pork Shoulder) is a national dish of Haiti and a standout on the menu, praised for its tender interior and crispy exterior, often served with the essential Fried Plantains (Bannann Peze). Similarly, the Tasso Cabrit (Fried Goat) is a flavor-packed experience that is truly worth choosing for its robust seasoning and texture. These fried meat platters, known as 'Fritays,' are a core part of the menu and are perfect for sharing or a truly satisfying individual meal.
Another highlight is the selection of Entree Meals, which are a full plate experience. Diners frequently choose the slow-cooked, richly sauced dishes. The Oxtail, whether the Medium or Large portion, is highly recommended for its melt-in-your-mouth texture and flavorful sauce, though customers should specifically ask for extra sauce (gravy) to soak up all the rice and beans, a common piece of feedback that helps maximize the dish's enjoyment. For the vegetable stews, the Lalo and Militon Legume offer a comforting, hearty option that pairs perfectly with White Rice and Sos Poi (Haitian bean sauce).
For a side, the Black Rice (Diri Djon Djon) is a unique and sought-after Haitian delicacy—rice cooked with dried black mushrooms that impart a distinctive earthy flavor and dark color. For an appetizer, ordering the Akra or Marinade fritters, served with a side of spicy, pickled vegetable relish called Pikliz, provides a perfect start to the meal. While a note of caution, especially for those with allergies, is to always confirm the specific type of meat (beef or pork) used in stews like Legumes when placing your order, as the default preparations can vary. Overall, Magela's provides a genuine, flavorful, and filling taste of the Haitian islands in the heart of East Orange, making it a valuable addition to the Caribbean dining scene in New Jersey.

August 06 · tonie cadetI ordered legumes (with beef) for the first time on DoorDash last Friday. It was delicious! I loved it and left me and my coworkers wanting more. Then on Monday, we decided to go back and order the same thing only to find out when we got back from the restaurant that the legumes was made with pork which I’m allergic to. I called explaining what happened and was told that the first time I bought it wasn’t from them and they don’t make legumes with beef. I told the lady they should have specified what it came with because I never knew legumes was made with pork. None of the staff I talked to really apologized. We couldn’t even eat the food since my coworker doesn’t eat pork either and they wanted to argue with me on the phone and be in denial. I’m deeply disappointed.
July 30 · Leika Mondesir-OnabanjoWill not be going there matter of fact will not be going to any Haitian restaurant. one time I ordered diri sos pwa I got sent only the rice when I called they told me they didn’t have any sos pwa. Yesterday I ordered black rice I got sent red rice it’s like a pattern when they don’t have something they will not call to let you know, they don’t care if you might be allergic if you do not like something they not gonna communicateI ordered a black rice/ diri djondjon and got something different and the rice wasn’t good it wasn’t well presented. Why have a restaurant when you don’t know how to serve people I ordered that because I know for sure I’ll get macaroni on the side, salad, and all the good stuff when preparing food on a Sunday in a Haïtian household.🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️ keep opening restaurants without knowing how to cook or serve peopleMy last time.
October 19 · Belinda BelotThe fish isn’t cook at all with all the epis inside ,i think you guys need to pay intention to what you sell in the name of haitian cuisine.
July 05 · Guerlanda CasseusIM SORRY BUT THE FACT THAT YALL PUT THE PRICE UP IS RIDICULOUS. FOOD IS NOT EVEN GOOD FOR YOU TO DO THAT. Legum taste sour. Rice HARD!!!!!! PUT THE PRICES BACK, you have no rights to put the price up when the customer service is TERRIBLE!
