Nonnas 1977 Introduce
Introduction / Overview: Nonnas 1977—Where Italian Tradition Meets Astoria’s Rock-and-Roll Vibe
In a city obsessed with pizza, Nonnas 1977 stands out not just as another slice joint, but as a unique culinary and cultural experience in Astoria, Queens. This beloved, women-owned establishment carries a rich legacy, drawing inspiration from a radical idea that originated on the Lower East Side in 1977: selling thick-crust, Italian-style square pizzas. Nonnas 1977 has proudly brought that tradition to Queens, specializing in what they affectionately call "Magic Pies."
The restaurant’s entire concept is built on authenticity and a fun, music-inspired atmosphere. They are committed to using top-quality, house-made ingredients—starting with dough infused with cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil, sauce slow-cooked from three different types of plum tomatoes, and their signature mozzarella pulled fresh in-house every morning. The square pies are baked in a heavy pan to ensure an edge-to-edge crispness with no soggy middle, finished with a generous sprinkle of imported Pecorino and Grana Padano cheeses.
Beyond the exceptional pizza, the menu is a celebration of Italian-American comfort food, featuring massive, two-hand "Bomb Parm Heroes," classic pasta dishes like Penne ala Vodka and Spaghetti Bolognese, and catering-sized Parms. The rock-and-roll memorabilia decorating the space, often accompanied by live jazz or rock music, gives Nonnas 1977 a cozy, casual, and highly distinct character that has made it a favorite among Astoria locals for lunch, dinner, late-night bites, and solo dining.

What is Worth Choosing Nonnas 1977
For New Yorkers seeking a pizza experience that breaks from the traditional fold, Nonnas 1977 is undoubtedly worth choosing. The main draw is the "Magic Pie" concept—a commitment to a unique, square-style pizza that focuses heavily on scratch-made ingredients, from the daily-pulled mozzarella to the slow-cooked plum tomato sauce. This attention to foundation elevates the entire pie, making even a simple 'Proud Mary' an exceptional experience.
Beyond the classic, the array of imaginative toppings on pies like the 'Angie' (stuffed artichoke, spinach cream) or the 'Sweet Caroline' provides a gourmet, umami-rich flavor that you simply won't find at every corner pizzeria. The culinary excellence is matched by the restaurant’s lively, music-infused character. The combination of savory Italian comfort food—including highly-rated heroes, pasta dishes like Penne ala Vodka, and giant Parms—with a cool, rock-and-roll ambiance and regular live music creates a truly memorable local experience.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Absolutely delicious pizza, umami flavor, fresh and a wide range of different options that are quite unique, on top of the delicious food the lady who was doing the cashier and ordering was super nice and welcoming it really added to the experience. I highly recommend the Angie slice it was so good the artichoke was cooked to perfection and the creaminess of the ricotta was a nice touch. Definitely try this place out!
July 20 · Nami AuroraGreat pizza and pasta dishes at Nonna’s 1977. They make their own dough, sauce, and mozzarella for delicious pizza. LIVE JAZZ on Wednesdays by the Larry Luger Trio and Rock music on the weekends in the patio behind the restaurant. Cool vibe with rock memorabilia on the walls.
June 12 · Teresa MAbsolutely positivity delicious!!!! it was my first time. I have no idea what I was walking into but I’m so glad that I went inside and tried the pizza. The type of satisfaction that I got from here!!!! Must try if you love pizza !
July 18 · Jamil JimenezI’ve been recovering from surgery and homebound so I treated myself to a pizza delivery for lunch today. I ordered a whole pie, the Gloria, with sausage, roasted peppers, and wild mushroom. I have had the slice in store before and really like it. When the pie arrived, I thought they had made a mistake. There was no sausage! My first slice literally had none. Then I had to look very closely and saw a few little dots of sausage. My guess is the entire pie had maybe a third of a link of sausage spread out. I was really looking forward to it, but I am really disappointed. I am attaching some pictures. (don’t mistake the mushrooms for the sausages. The sausages are the tiny dots of which I have a sample on my finger.)42 bucks with tip!**update: contacted Nonna’s the next day, per the owner’s response to my review. I just gave my information and order number and the young woman said she would talk to the guy who prepared it. I was hoping to maybe get a side of sausage to go with the pizza, but she said she would just talk to the guy. It’s OK, the pizza is still good and this place makes very good pizza otherwise.
December 21 · MartyTwo part review: the pizza is definitely good, we ordered here weekly at this point. My only complaint is the consistency. We’ve gotten the same pizza several weeks in row and I feel like it’s been slightly different each time. So my suggestion is to work on that aspect. We’ve also had delivery mistakes twice now in our order so more attention should be paid to orders as well. Overall we love Nonna’s and we’ll keep ordering but that’s my take.
