You need to be a graduate student or specific faculty – or you know someone who is – in order to access to this spot. It is located inside the Graduate Student Center of Philosophy Hall. To the left of the entrance is where the cafe is located. You need an ID badge to enter. The inside the cafe was quite nice! Very high building, clean and modern. A good place for grad students to relax in peace and quiet. There is an ordering counter with baked goods nicely displayed. They also have sandwich, salad, soup, and few other items here.We started off with Hot Matcha Latte and Iced Matcha Latte, with pretty good matcha flavor. It was surprisingly good, we were happy with them both. For food, we Avocado Toast and few donburi dishes. The Avocado Toast didn’t look like much, but it was actually REALLY good! They have a few donburi, and we chose Tuna Yukke Don and Gyuu Don. It came out without poached egg. We took it back to the staff, and he said “yes, you can order these without eggs.” Ummm, well, we DO want to eggs with these. The older staff got a bit confused, went to the back kitchen, and then discovered they don’t have eggs brought in yet. What!About 10 minutes of wait, they brought in eggs, and made the poached eggs for our dishes. Needless to say, our food was staring to get cold, but not too bad… Finally, the egg was on the top with some seasoning, and the our “bowls” were finally complete. They were good and tasty. To finish our lunch, we ordered a cup of Mango from inside their refrigerator. They were all perfectly ripe and juicy!Overall, the experience was good. The price is a bit high, but then the quality of food and drink was really good too. If they didn’t have the egg incident, it would have been much better experience. - Foodlover Girl

Nous Espresso Introduce

In a city of millions, finding a quiet corner to focus, recharge, and enjoy a quality cup of coffee can be a challenge. Nous Espresso offers just that—a hidden gem nestled within the academic heart of New York City. This coffee shop is a unique destination, not just for its great coffee and food, but for the specific and serene environment it provides. Located inside the Graduate Student Center at Philosophy Hall on the Columbia University campus, it serves as a tranquil oasis for a very specific crowd: graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and certain faculty members. This exclusivity creates a calm and focused atmosphere, a world away from the hustle and bustle of the city streets. The space itself is described as clean and modern, with high ceilings and a design that encourages peace and quiet. For those who can access it, Nous Espresso is the perfect blend of a professional workspace and a casual cafe, making it an ideal spot for solo dining or working on a laptop.

The core of Nous Espresso’s appeal is its dual identity as both a coffee shop and a provider of substantive meals. While the focus is on a great cup of coffee and a stellar tea selection, the menu extends to a variety of delicious and well-prepared food items. From an unexpectedly good Avocado Toast to a range of salads, sandwiches, and even Japanese-inspired donburi bowls, the food offerings are a pleasant surprise. This breadth allows patrons to enjoy not just a quick bite, but a full breakfast or lunch, all in one convenient and comfortable location. The atmosphere, described as both casual and trendy, strikes the right balance between being a productive work environment and a relaxing space to take a break. It's a place where the quality of the food and drink is highly valued, with a professional and friendly staff dedicated to providing a pleasant experience.

Nous Espresso is located at Philosophy Hall, 1150 Amsterdam Ave, in the heart of New York City's Morningside Heights neighborhood, specifically on the campus of Columbia University. Its address places it on a major avenue, making it a familiar landmark for those in the area. However, it is important to note a crucial detail about its accessibility. As it is situated within a secure, access-controlled building, it is not open to the general public. Entry requires a Columbia University ID badge, specifically for graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, or certain faculty members. While this may limit its audience, it is precisely what makes the cafe a quiet and productive space, free from the crowds often found at other public coffee shops.

For those who have the required access, the location is highly convenient. It is a straightforward destination for individuals on campus who need a place to study, meet, or grab a quick meal. The area surrounding Columbia University is well-served by public transportation, including subway and bus lines, making it easily reachable for those coming from other parts of the city. For drivers, paid street parking is available, though it can be competitive in the area. The internal location within Philosophy Hall means patrons can enjoy a quiet space without the noise and disruption of a typical street-front cafe.
