The atmosphere is distinctly trendy, classy, and vibrant, making it a perfect spot for special occasions, group gatherings, or a stylish night out.
Okaru is not your average neighborhood sushi spot; it is a fine dining establishment that brings the innovative spirit of Manhattan's top Japanese restaurants right to Nassau County. The menu, crafted by a highly experienced Executive Chef, is extensive and focuses on both traditional Japanese flavors and modern culinary artistry. Diners can expect a comprehensive selection that spans from expertly prepared sushi and sashimi to innovative hot and cold appetizers and substantial entrees. The quality of ingredients is a major highlight, featuring high-end items like Blue Fin Tuna, Hokkaido Scallops, Kumamoto Oysters, and the luxurious Grilled Mishima Ranch 32oz Wagyu Tomahawk, alongside more focused, seasonal specials.
The beverage program is just as ambitious as the food, featuring a curated selection of sake, wine, beer, and a deep collection of Japanese whiskey. Patrons frequently highlight the inventive, ingredient-driven cocktail menu, often noting the "Great cocktails" as a strong feature of the establishment, although, as with any high-end mixology program, personal preference dictates the reception of specialty drinks. The dining experience is complemented by attentive and professional table service, with staff and management often noted for going the extra mile to ensure a memorable visit, especially during busy evenings and celebrations.
The restaurant's design and layout are impressive, housed in a historic building that has been meticulously transformed to offer multiple distinct dining areas. These include a main dining room, a central sushi bar, a dedicated omakase and chef's table area for bespoke experiences, private dining rooms for intimate events, and even an outdoor patio for seasonal use. This variety of settings ensures that Okaru can cater to different moods and occasions, from a romantic dinner to a large family or corporate celebration. Dinner reservations are highly recommended, reflecting its popularity as a top-tier destination in the Roslyn dining scene.
The prices on the menu reflect the premium ingredients and upscale dining atmosphere, with offerings ranging from Soups and Salads in the $10 to $28 range, to Cold Appetizers like the Spicy Yellowtail Sashimi ($24.00) and Hot Appetizers such as the Japanese A-5 Wagyu Gyoza ($38.00). Sushi and sashimi options cover a wide spectrum of cuts and preparations, with specialized Makizushi rolls like the Spicy King Crab ($32.00) and the rich Blue Fin Otoro ($28.00) nigiri. Desserts are an equally important part of the meal, featuring creative and highly-rated items like the Japanese Whiskey Bread Pudding ($16.00).

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1We celebrated some big family wins at Okaru with a 5 PM reservation. Heads-up: they require a credit card hold, and there’s a $35/person fee for cancellations within 24 hours — fair, but worth noting. The space is stunning, valet is convenient, and service was friendly (shoutout to Bryant). However, the restaurant is very loud inside — they’d benefit from adjusting the bass for a better dining experience.Drinks were hit or miss. The Lychee Martini was funky (3/10), but the Lady 0 with sake was fantastic (10/10). Food-wise, standout dishes included the foie gras & tuna special (10/10), tuna crispy rice (10/10), and mushroom gohan (8/10). Sushi rolls, however, were disappointing — mostly bland and mushy.Desserts were solid, especially the summer berries kakigori and green tea mille crepe.Overall: 7/10. A trendy spot with some highlights, but for a $700+ bill, we expected more. Worth trying once, but better food/value can be found elsewhere on the island.
May 25 · Payton “Payton” MastWhat a great experience we had in Okaru, located in the heart of Roslyn Village. From the impeccable service to the food to the ambience, Okaru has made a leaping progression since opening.Food:We ordered four appetizers, love them all. Spicy yellowtail sashimi, steamed lobster gyoza, spicy crispy seabass is crispy yet melt-in-your-mouth tender (our fav!) and seared Hokkaido scallops were all perfectly cooked. For entrees we had mushroom rice gohan, red miso lamb chop, salmon aburi handroll, snow crab handroll, bluefin Toro Roll, spicy king crab roll, seared salmon aburi roll. Beside the lamb chops was a little to the bland side, everything was really great! Dessert didn’t disappoint either. We ordered four and love all four! Japanese whiskey bread pudding was the star!!!!Services:Compared to our last experience with Okaru six months ago, this time both the services and food have elevated a lot! The restaurant was packed as usual but we got seated in the main dining room in less than five minutes. Staffs are friendly, attentive and professional. The hostess, Flora, greet us with warmth. The manager, Natalia, came by our table making sure everything is good and that we have a good time. It was a surprise birthday celebration for my husband, who coincidentally also had an impromptu conference call an hour into the dinner. So timing was a little tight. Although the service was quick and our food came out pretty fast, my husband still needed to leave the seat and stepped out for a conference call towards the end of the dinner. I told our hostess Flora about this situation and she helped me coordinating with my waitress Ally, who’s very attentive and pleasant, as well as the kitchen staffs, making sure dessert and cake with candle will be brought out as soon as my husband came back to our table. This attentive service on a busy night def made Okaru stand out in this wildly competitive restaurant district. Will def come back!
October 01 · Shirley' MaThe restaurant itself is quite modern and elegant, the aesthetics here shine. The staff checked us in and brought us to our table with zero wait, I cannot stress how nice and refreshing that is. The hot towels were a nice touch. The drinks came quickly and the appetizers as well. The sashito peppers and the edamame were good and the salad although simple were excellent. The sushi rolls were properly presented and everything tasted fresh. The wait staff was excellent and very attentive. While waiting for the valet the manager personally came outside and reviewed our experience. In all my time, I’ve never experienced that level of attention, very impressed. I would definitely give Okaru a try.
September 13 · Vishal SharmaAs someone who lives in NYC, I’m always looking for restaurants with both great ambiance and great food - and that’s not always easy to find on Long Island. But Okaru in Roslyn completely exceeded expectations. The service was incredible. Our server was kind, attentive, and truly wanted to make sure we had a great experience. As someone with celiac, I was also so impressed by how seriously they took my gluten allergy - most of the menu could be made gluten-free, and I felt totally safe and taken care of.We started with the warm Japanese mushroom salad - such a good way to kick things off. The spicy yellowtail sashimi was amazing (next time I’m getting the king salmon), and the crab crispy rice, salmon tobanyaki, and mushroom gohan rice were all so flavorful and satisfying. Sushi was super fresh too - great fish quality. The biggest surprise was dessert: the summer berries kakigori. I didn’t expect much from something described as shaved ice, but it was infused with grapefruit?, yuzu, and berries and ended up being the table favorite - even over the chocolate dessert.Whether you're gluten-free or not, Okaru is a total standout - delicious food, great vibe, and an experience worth repeating.
April 17 · Chandni ChandihokTomas is an amazing waiter who provided exceptional service and amazing menu suggestions. He really made our dinner special. The food here is phenomenal and great quality. You will not be disappointed. Ambiance is luxury and beautiful, perfect for a date night! Highly recommended Okaru!!
June 13 · Donna GopieI ate here last night for the first time with a few friends, and we'll definitely be going back. Some of the dishes were downright amazing: Chicken Katsu Steamed Bun, Grilled Octopus, Seared Hokkaido Scallops, Mushroom Rice Gohan, and both the Tuna and Caviar Crispy Rice all are going to be things I'd order again -- or even go back specifically for.I also need to give a shout-out to two of the specials: The Wagyu Gyoza were amazingly crispy on one side and soft and tender otherwise. Fantastic texture and flavor. We rolled the dice with the Foie Gras and Seared Akami Tuna. Turns out those two things work incredibly well together! The dishes I'd give a pass next time were the Spicy Crispy Shrimp and Avocado Crispy Rice. Neither was bad, just compared to everything else they fell short. For dessert, the Whiskey Bread Pudding was excellent, and I got a Matcha Affogato which was delicious. We also ordered the "Omakase" option on the menu as well as some nigiri pieces and rolls. All of the fish was of high quality, and the rice was beyond reproach. If you like uni, then definitely get the uni here. They said it's from Hokkaido and I 100% believe them; it was some of the best I've had.(I put omakase in quotes above because that's what it's called on the menu, but presumably the Chef's Grand Tasting Menu and just the Tasting Menu would also fall under the omakase category. So it's a bit of a weird naming convention, IMO.)On the sake list we tried two Okaru exclusive bottles (possibly re-badged?), and both were great: Great Wave and Black Label, both Junmai Ginjo.Service was fast and efficient. No complaints there.Prices are high, but I feel like it was good value for money. They seem to be using commensurately expensive ingredients, and spending time on prep and presentation. The interior decor is beautiful, but the only downside to the restaurant comes with all the wood and hard surfaces. When we got there, the dining room was pretty full, and it was loud enough to make conversation difficult. But not a big deal considering how good the meal was otherwise; It didn't detract from our experience overall.
October 09 · Scott M. RosenbergUnparalleled experience, the flavors, and thoughtful presentation. Delicious all around and the waiters were seamless, didn’t miss a beat and felt very cared for! I sat at the sushi bar and what a treat to see the beautiful works of art they’re creating. Second time here and will come again! Plus the music and overall atmosphere is always a good vibe!
