OKONOMI Brooklyn Introduce
In the bustling landscape of Brooklyn’s culinary scene, OKONOMI stands out as a true gem, offering a deeply authentic and intimate Japanese dining experience. This unique establishment, located at 150 Ainslie St in the vibrant neighborhood of Williamsburg, seamlessly transitions between two distinct concepts throughout the day: a serene spot for a traditional Japanese breakfast and a lively destination for delicious ramen and seafood. For New Yorkers seeking a break from the ordinary, OKONOMI provides a peaceful and culturally rich escape.
The atmosphere here is a perfect blend of casual, cozy, and trendy. The space is small and intimate, with only about 12 seats, primarily at a counter. This limited seating capacity creates a personal and exclusive dining experience, allowing guests to watch their food being prepared with meticulous care. It's a setting that encourages a sense of calm and appreciation for the craftsmanship behind each dish. The welcoming environment is also a major highlight, as OKONOMI is an LGBTQ+ friendly and transgender safe space, making it a comfortable and inclusive destination for all members of the community.
This restaurant is a testament to quality over quantity. The menu is focused and deliberate, ensuring that every dish is crafted to perfection. This is particularly evident in their famous traditional Japanese breakfast, known as "Ichiju Sansai." While the portions may be on the smaller side, they are designed to be a complete and balanced meal, not just a way to fill up. The focus is on the experience—the delicate flavors, the fresh ingredients, and the quiet ritual of a traditional Japanese morning meal.
For lunch and dinner, the focus shifts to their acclaimed ramen and seafood dishes, with a menu that includes Mazemen (broth-less ramen) and a variety of seafood-centric donburi bowls. The rave reviews for their fresh and clean fish speak to the high quality of their ingredients, a feature that is essential for any reputable Japanese restaurant. The menu is also thoughtfully designed to cater to a variety of tastes, offering comfort food, vegan options, and vegetarian options, as well as organic dishes for the health-conscious diner.
OKONOMI is conveniently situated at 150 Ainslie St, Brooklyn, NY 11211, USA, in a great part of Williamsburg. The location is easily accessible, and for those who drive, the availability of free street parking is a significant advantage in a neighborhood where parking can be a challenge. The restaurant's popularity means there's "usually a wait," so planning ahead is highly recommended, especially for the breakfast service. Guests can make reservations to secure their spot for a guaranteed experience, but the wait is often worth it for the quality of the food and the uniqueness of the atmosphere.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Food 4/5Service 3.5/5Ambiance 3.5/5Okonomi serves a traditional Japanese breakfast for $30-$38. The experience is intimate, with only 12 seats, so reservations are a must.Don't expect to leave completely full, as the portions are on the smaller side, but it's definitely a unique experience.I enjoyed the miso salmon, but found the pollock a bit dry and underseasoned. It seems the fish quality can vary, as my friend's pollock was juicier.
September 13 · Cecilia LeeLiterally writing this before we’ve even left. DO NOT MISS WHEN A RES POPS UP HERE. Unbelievably delightful, start to finish. No decision fatigue, you get to watch things being made (sit at the counter 😌), great sake, and service attentive and kind but nowhere near overdone. If you’re hungry, do the large platter. And if they have a sashimi app, DO IT. You won’t regret it. Some of the freshest, cleanest fish I’ve had in a while. Such a beautiful experience in the chaos of a rapidly changing Williamsburg. 12/10!!!
August 22 · Deniz Sonmez-AlpanTucked away in a cozy little space, this Japanese eatery feels like a hidden gem. Every dish is crafted with such care — not only delicious but also a feast for the eyes, each plate like a small work of art. The warm smiles and thoughtful service make the experience even more memorable. A place that lingers in the heart — I’ll surely find my way back again.
April 25 · YuHsuan YehDelicious food in a serene atmosphere, particularly delicious on a rainy day! I really loved the scallops with the house soy sauce, and the presentation of each dish was stunning. I could eat a million of their little tamogayakis!
June 14 · Maria Serach Alexandra LemireThis cosy restaurant is a gem. The food was simple, fresh and prepared beautifully. Every details was well thought out - from the tea leaves to the different wasabi for the appetizer (sashimi that melted in our mouth), to the exquisite black cod. We could have asked for their playlist as well, which added to the cosy vibes, great service. My friend described it as being a guest in someone’s house and being pampered with delicious food. The chef threw in a slice of cantaloupe and a zesty, refreshing iced ‘thingy’ at the end, on the house.Though the place was small, it wasn’t loud or too quiet. Just really comfortable … we’ll be back.
