In a city filled with countless cafes, Sant Ambroeus Coffee Bar at Hanley distinguishes itself by bringing a touch of Milanese sophistication to the heart of the Upper East Side. This establishment is part of a celebrated Italian brand that has been a favorite among discerning locals and international visitors for decades. While the name may evoke a sense of high-end exclusivity, the location at 1136 3rd Ave functions as a high-quality cafe and coffee bar that offers a beautiful space to enjoy a meal, a coffee, or a drink. It's a place where style meets substance, offering an extensive menu of authentic Italian fare in a refined, yet welcoming, environment.
Sant Ambroeus is known for its commitment to classic Italian quality and craftsmanship, a tradition that began with its first location in Milan in 1936. This heritage is evident in every aspect of the coffee bar, from the design elements inspired by the original location to the freshly prepared pastries and food. While some may find the pricing to be on the higher side, a closer look reveals a value in the quality of the ingredients and the meticulous preparation. The coffee is celebrated as "great," and the baked goods, such as the cornetti, are a major draw. Beyond coffee and pastries, the menu expands to include a full selection of savory dishes, paninis, and even a bar with Italian wines and cocktails, transforming it from a simple cafe into a versatile dining destination for any time of day.
The atmosphere at Sant Ambroeus is a notable feature, often described as casual, cozy, and trendy. It's a space designed to be both intimate and elegant, with design elements that transport guests to a European cafe. The establishment is a popular spot for breakfast and lunch, attracting a clientele that appreciates its sophisticated setting. However, it's worth noting that its popularity can sometimes lead to a crowded environment, and the policy regarding laptop use may be strict during busy periods. Despite these points, the cafe's overall appeal remains strong, with a large crowd of loyal customers who value the quality of the food and the beautiful ambiance it offers.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I have often walked by the Sant Ambroeus Coffee Bar on Third Avenue but always had the distinct impression that it was overpriced and seemed to attract a certain clientele that didn’t mind spending more because it limited the kinds of customers who might prefer a cheaper cup of coffee. I was shocked that a large latte cost over $8 and probably should have headed to the door but wondered, is it possible that their coffee would be worth the price? While trying to decide, I checked out the prices of their salads and sandwiches, that actually looked reasonably priced but regrettably, I just ordered the latte and after a few sips, tossed it in a garbage can! In my opinion, their coffee is indeed overpriced but their salads and sandwiches might be worth buying! I might return to sample their other menu items but I really was disappointed with my overpriced latte !
November 04 · Arthur GlaubermanI’d like to share some constructive feedback, especially for the owner of this place. I came in planning to enjoy a meal, have some coffee, and get a bit of work done on my laptop. However, when I went to order, the staff member told me I couldn’t stay too long using my computer because the space tends to get busy.I understand if there are internal policies, but at that moment the café wasn’t crowded, and I was planning to order and support the business. It felt like future potential customers were being prioritized over someone ready to consume and enjoy the space.Because of this, I decided to leave. I truly wanted to spend time there, but the experience left me disappointed. I hope this can be taken into consideration to make the space more welcoming for all customers.
June 09 · Marosky GudinoAbsolutely terrible experience. Couldn’t use my laptop—was told “we don’t allow that” in the rudest possible tone, despite plenty of open tables. Staff was dismissive, cold, and borderline hostile. This isn’t a café—it’s a museum of overpriced coffee and attitude. Don’t waste your time or money. Plenty of better spots nearby that actually respect customers. Avoid.
July 10 · KonstantinI’ve been coming to this café consistently for the past month, using my laptop to work while always purchasing drinks and food to support the business. It’s a cozy space and had become part of my daily routine until today.Out of nowhere, I was told that using a computer is against their policy. There were no signs posted, and nothing was ever mentioned during the many visits I’ve made. It felt especially frustrating and frankly discriminatory, considering other patrons seemed to be treated differently or allowed to stay longer without question. If this is truly a policy, it should be made clear from the start not selectively enforced. I used to feel welcomed here, but now it feels like certain people are being singled out, and that’s unacceptable.A coffee shop should be a community space, not one that makes people feel excluded.
July 10 · JuliaA cute coffee bar with big flavor. The grain salad was elegantly flavored, refreshing and also filling. Perfect for summer days. The hot chocolate is not particularly dense, in terms of texture, compared with other Italian hot chocolate in the city. However I found it soothing, not too rich/sweet, and easy to drink. The barista made a small cup for my little one - a super kind and thoughtful move. A pleasant option within walking distance of Central Park. Can't wait to go back next time.
