Sarge’s Delicatessen & Diner Introduce
In the ever-evolving culinary landscape of New York City, some places stand as timeless pillars, serving up tradition and comfort in every bite. Sarge’s Delicatessen & Diner is one such institution. For decades, this family-owned deli has been a beacon for New Yorkers seeking the authentic, hearty flavors of a classic Jewish deli. While many delis have come and gone, Sarge’s has maintained its reputation for serving up enormous, overstuffed sandwiches and a vast menu of comfort food that has made it a sentimental favorite for generations of locals. It's more than just a place to eat; it's a piece of New York history, a spot where the pastrami is piled high and the memories are just as rich.
The atmosphere at Sarge’s is as iconic as its food. With its lovably dated decor, including classic burgundy vinyl booths and Tiffany-style lamps, the diner exudes a "haimish" (homely) vibe that is both welcoming and nostalgic. The menu is a testament to the unfettered reach of a classic Greek diner, with an extensive list that goes far beyond traditional deli fare. While their pastrami and corned beef sandwiches are the stuff of legend, you can also find everything from fish and chips and barbecued ribs to an entire section dedicated to burgers. This comprehensive menu ensures that there is truly something for everyone, whether you’re craving a towering Reuben or a simple matzo ball soup. Sarge’s is a destination that delivers on both quality and quantity, ensuring no one leaves hungry.
Sarge’s Delicatessen & Diner is located at 548 3rd Ave, New York, NY 10016. Its address in the Murray Hill/Midtown East neighborhood places it in a highly convenient and accessible spot for a wide range of New Yorkers. The deli is easily reachable from major transportation hubs, including Grand Central Terminal, which is just a few blocks away. This makes it an ideal spot for commuters coming from different boroughs or outside the city to grab a bite before heading home.
The neighborhood is also well-served by several subway lines, including the 4, 5, 6, and 7 trains, with stations within a short walking distance. For those traveling by bus, routes running along 3rd Avenue and nearby streets provide direct access. Sarge's offers paid street parking for those who choose to drive, though as with much of Manhattan, parking can be a challenge. The restaurant is also wheelchair accessible, with an entrance and seating designed to accommodate all patrons. This ease of access ensures that this deli remains a go-to spot for locals, workers in the surrounding office buildings, and visitors looking for a quintessential New York dining experience without the chaos of some of the city’s more tourist-heavy institutions.

What makes Sarge's a New York institution and a must-visit destination is its collection of standout features and highlights.
- Massive, Overstuffed Sandwiches: This is arguably Sarge's most famous feature. Their sandwiches, especially the corned beef and pastrami, are legendary for being piled incredibly high, offering a generous portion that is often enough to feed two people. This focus on quantity, paired with high quality, provides exceptional value.
- House-Cured Meats: Sarge's cures its own pastrami in-house, a meticulous process that results in a unique and delicious flavor. While some prefer a thicker cut, the deli's thin-sliced, "silky smooth" pastrami is a fan favorite, often compared favorably to other famous delis.
- Extensive Menu Beyond Deli: Unlike a traditional deli, Sarge's also operates as a full-service diner. The menu includes a huge variety of items, from classic deli fare to matzo ball soup, burgers, and even entrées like brisket with gravy and fries. This broad selection ensures there is always something to satisfy any craving.
- Classic Atmosphere: The dated yet beloved decor with its celebrity photo-lined walls and classic booths provides an authentic, old-school New York vibe that is a key part of the experience. It feels like stepping back in time to a more relaxed, bygone era.
These features combine to create a dining experience that is both authentic and deeply satisfying.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Happened on this as I walked past. And I'm glad I did. I had the open brisket with gravy and fries to go.There was enough to feed 2. And the beef was fall apart tender. The fries are well done.Lemonade was nice and sweet.
September 08 · Gordon WatsonI’ve never had a cold cut sandwich quite like this before. The amount of corned beef and pastrami was a bit overwhelming for us, even for someone like me who usually enjoys meat heavy dishes. But for a cold cut, it wasn’t really my preference. If you’re into cold cut sandwiches piled high like this, you definitely won’t be disappointed as this place does deliver in both quality and quantity. My wife and I split one sandwich easily, and it was more than enough to fill us up. The flavor made it so much easier to enjoy and was the sole reason that helped me finish that generous portion of beef. All in all, it’s a solid deal if you’re planning to share.
August 23 · JonathanThis was my preferred restaurant experience during our 8-day trip to New York with my family this summer. We loved everything about this Deli, it was everything I was expecting. I had the pastrami sandwich (go for a half one with soup, that will be more than enough already) and it was incredible. The staff was very helpful and kind.
July 20 · Georges KöllerI don’t mean to disc Katz deli, it is really great. But it is so impossible to try to get in there. We needed to find an alternative. Sarge is definitely fit the bill. Food was fantastic. Service was great and friendly. Prices were right in line with what I expected. We didn’t have to wait we got seated. We got fed. We got comfortable. Awesome pastrami. What a great day. Thanks guys
September 16 · Joseph Coppola (Chip Coppola)Amazing pastrami, friendly service, and great vibes. Meat was tender, light, easy to eat. Didn’t need cheese or sauerkraut, but great with a touch of mustard or coleslaw. Fries were a bit heavy in the oil. Apple strudel to go was good but cold and might be better heated. Very busy place but got quickly seated for party of 2 on Sunday around noon.Among the better diners I’ve been to. Definitely will be back!
