★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Shinn West is a nice budget-friendly omakase option in Hell’s Kitchen — $69 for 13 courses is definitely a great deal in NYC, and the fish quality was decent for the price. They had a few cocktail options, but beer was limited to Kyoto IPA (original, yuzu, or matcha). The overall experience, though, felt a bit lacking. There was a strong fishy smell when I walked in, the space felt cold and not very welcoming, and the restroom really needed more care.Out of the omakase places I’ve tried, this one felt a bit rushed — not much interaction or explanation between courses. Personally, I’d rather pay a bit more to have a slower-paced, more engaging dinner in a cleaner and more inviting setting.
July 22 · Yuri ChoiWe came here for their limited BOGO deal as a result of Shinn EAST being under construction. For $75/2 people’s worth of omakase I’d say it was a pretty good deal. The fish quality was definitely above supermarket quality but still not what I would consider “high quality”. Nevertheless, the sushi was still delicious. While I was satisfied with the bites, I still left the restaurant hungry. I don’t think I could recommend anyone come here if they prioritize value for your money.
July 19 · Victor ChauLuckily, we managed to find an open reservation for 2 at Shinn West for the next day, so we jumped on the opportunity. They were still doing the BOGO omakase deal so for about $40 a person we were able to have a nice little omakase meal. I think every dish was good, but not exceptional. I think the quality matched the price range, however if it were more expensive it would not be worth the price. Regardless of the food quality, service here was top notch. Hostesses constantly refilling drinks and water while the sushi chefs in front were constantly monitoring the pace of their diners. Due to being only 1 hour, the meal did feel a little short, but everything was great and at the end of the courses we were allowed to chill. Joey, our chef, even hooked it up with extra rice, which was one of my favorite parts of the meal. He said that they throw out any excess rice between seatings so he offered us a whole baseball sized ball of rice at the end of the meal. For the BOGO price I would definitely recommend this place for quality and variety. However, I would be a little more hesitant if it was for the whole price.
July 02 · Anthony GiangGrabbed a last minute reservation on the last day of their BOGO free deal. It felt a bit rushed compared to their normal set that we tried a few years ago. It was good for the price though. Sizes of pieces varied a lot. Sometimes the person next to me got almost double the fish portion
July 08 · Kristy CI came here for their BOGO deal and had a great time. The interior of the omakase spot is spacious and there are two bars going on. You definitely need to get reservations here as it was full when I went. Service here is definitely very fast as it's a more casual omakase experience. The omakase experience includes 13 courses, consisting of all nigiri and one handroll. All of the pieces that I got were delicious and the portions were good. Fish quality was solid and I loved the pairing that they did. Favorite was definitely the miso cod. Overall, great omakase for the price and I loved the experience.
