What is Worth Choosing
For those new to Indo-Caribbean cuisine, or even seasoned veterans of the Queens food scene, Sonny's Roti Shop offers a deep and satisfying dive into flavor. The menu is expansive, but a few items stand out as essential choices for the full Sonny's experience, reflecting the unique blend of South Asian curry techniques and Caribbean ingredients.
The undisputed champion and first recommendation is the Doubles. This iconic Trini street snack is elevated here, with customers raving about the intense, on-point flavor and the perfect balance of pepper and tangy tamarind sauce. Beyond the classic channa (curried chickpeas) filling, Sonny's offers unique variations such as the Boneless Chicken Doubles, Shrimp Doubles, and Tripe Doubles, providing a satisfying variety for all palates. As one satisfied customer noted, the doubles are "bussing!!" and worth a long drive across the city.
For a full meal, you cannot go wrong with any of their Roti or Rice and Dhal platters. The Curry Chicken with Roti is a perennial 'Most Ordered' item, featuring tender chicken and potatoes stewed in a rich curry and paired with your choice of roti (Paratha or Dhal Puri). Similarly, the Curry Goat with Roti is a hearty and flavorful choice for those who enjoy a more robust meat. The meat curries at Sonny's are celebrated for their tenderness and depth of flavor, making them ideal for soaking up the flaky, soft roti.
Another highly popular and recommended item is the Rice, Dhal, and Chicken Curry. This plate offers a comforting, complete meal, pairing the chicken curry with fluffy white rice and a side of creamy dhal (yellow split pea stew). For those seeking something beyond the standard fare, be sure to explore options like the Stew Oxtail with Roti or the Curry Duck with Roti, both of which showcase the slow-cooked, rich complexity that Caribbean cooking is known for.
Vegetarian and vegan diners have an exceptional array of choices that move far beyond simple sides. The Phoulorie, deep-fried spiced split pea balls served with tamarind sauce, is a popular vegetarian starter. For a main course, options like the Roti and Pumpkin, Roti and Channa, or the combination of Four Veggies (Pumpkin, Channa, Potato, Spinach) provide nutritious and exceptionally flavorful alternatives that are a hallmark of the Indo-Caribbean diet.
Finally, to complement your meal, be sure to inquire about their array of homemade beverages like the Peanut Punch or Coconut Water, and don't forget a West Indian dessert like the Milk Fudge or Coconut Drops to complete this authentic New York-Queens culinary experience. Sonny's Roti Shop is a pillar of the South Richmond Hill food scene, offering a culinary journey that is both authentic and incredibly delicious.

April 05 · brilliant smilesSonny’s is bussing!! Try the doubles and be sure to get extra pepper and tamarind sauce!!! Love the food and flavors. The staff are well… West Indian so they are very to the point, no small talk! The shop stays busy so maybe they’re just to busy trying to accommodate everyone to speak. Great food!!

July 21 · Daniel PinoI bought two Guyanese chicken fry rice from Sonny’s today. It was the worst fried rice I ever had in my life. They made the rice with brown rice and it’s so hard and tasteless. The food has no flavor and it taste like mint. I would never ever buy from them again. While waiting for the food the cashier and the staff was arguing with each other. Before you guys fight amongst yourself use that time to make your food better . 😡😡😡
