What is worth choosing
When navigating the extensive and intriguing menu at Alshaibani, there are certain dishes and elements that consistently stand out as worth choosing for an authentic and satisfying meal. For first-time visitors, or even seasoned veterans of Middle Eastern cuisine, the lamb and the bread are non-negotiables.
The Lamb Haneeth is widely considered a must-try. This slow-roasted lamb, seasoned to perfection and served over fragrant spiced rice, embodies the mastery of Yemeni meat preparation. The result is a piece of meat that is both tender and richly flavored, a true representation of the cuisine’s best.
Another high-impact choice is the Fahsa or Saltah. These are traditional, bubbling hot stews—Fahsa includes shredded lamb—served in a clay pot. Eating it with the accompanying fresh-baked bread is the intended, authentic method, using pieces of the crackling bread to scoop up the rich stew, which often features a distinctive fenugreek froth on top. This is an interactive and unforgettable dish that showcases the communal and hearty nature of Yemeni dining.
The Fresh-Baked Flatbread itself is a highlight and should be part of any order. It is described as being directly from a 'blast-furnace oven,' arriving charred, crackling, and as fresh as possible. It serves as the perfect utensil for everything on the table, from the main stews to the dips like Hummus and Baba Ghanoush. A customer review highlighted that the bread alone is addictive and a reason to return.
For chicken lovers, the various preparations are excellent, such as the Chicken Mandi (with its characteristic smoky flavor from the pit-style cooking) or the Chicken Zurbian (spiced rice, tender chicken, potatoes, and yogurt slow-cooked together). For seafood enthusiasts, choices like Oujda Fish or Fahsa Salmon offer a unique Yemeni take on fish preparation, seasoned with traditional spices.
Finally, for a complete cultural experience, conclude your meal with a traditional Yemeni dessert like Masoub (mashed bread mixed with cream, honey, and butter) or a glass of Adeni Tea. The desserts offer a unique sweet finish that goes beyond the standard fare found in other regional restaurants.
While a small number of reviews suggest minor service inconsistencies, such as new staff occasionally forgetting side dishes, the overwhelmingly positive feedback centers on the quality, authenticity, and profound flavor of the food, especially the lamb, bread, and the warm service provided by the hosts who make an effort to educate newcomers. Alshaibani stands as a highly recommended culinary adventure in the vibrant Bay Ridge neighborhood for New Yorkers seeking authentic, unforgettable Yemeni food.

We ordered fish. It was tasty, but not made fresh for us...They brought it 5 minutes after we ordered it and it was just warm. The waitress didn't know the menu and when she brought our plates it was missing some sides that were supposed to come with the fish. When we asked for them she said if we wanted the sides!Duh! Of course we want them.Bread was good though.
November 18 · You RaAl Shaibani is the new Yemen kid in town, not too far from Bay Ridge's classic Yemen Cafe. But everything here is different, and deliciously so. I don't know too much about Yemeni food, but the host put our group immediately at ease, telling us about the history of the dishes and their preparation. It was a great way to get to the essentials of the cuisine. And the essentials: Great, addictive flat breads from the blast-furnace oven, charred, crackling and fresh as possible. Branzino came out equally delicious. The soups and stews were tasty and subtley spiced, the plentiful lamb dishes featured gamy meat that fell from the bone. The room was more pleasant than the lighting and plastic forks initially suggested. As delicious and fresh as the food was, we'll come back for the service which was so warm and attentive to a group of neophytes.
