Bar Centrale Introduce
In the effervescent and often chaotic heart of New York City's Theater District, Bar Centrale stands as a hidden and soothing gem. Located discreetly at 324 W 46th Street, this upscale and cozy bar and restaurant is a must-visit destination for anyone seeking a refined and intimate atmosphere. Identifying as a women-owned business and a transgender-safe space, Bar Centrale cultivates a welcoming environment for a diverse and discerning clientele, including the vibrant LGBTQ+ community. Its unique, speakeasy-like vibe makes it a sought-after destination, especially for the after-theater crowd looking to unwind in a classy and comfortable setting.
Bar Centrale is known for its warm and inviting ambiance. The decor, with its black-and-white photos of famous actors and a general sense of timeless elegance, transports you away from the bustling streets outside. A key feature that sets this bar apart is its "no standing" policy at the bar, which ensures the space never feels overly crowded and conversations remain easy and pleasant. Patrons consistently praise the friendly and welcoming staff, with some mentioning the bartenders’ perfect balance of professionalism and small talk. This personal touch, combined with the bar’s sophisticated yet cozy feel, makes it a favorite among both locals and Broadway insiders.
While many love the bar for its atmosphere and the professionalism of the staff, it’s worth noting that opinions on the cocktails can vary. A common thread in some reviews suggests that while the bar is known for its great cocktails and offers a list of classics like the Sazerac and Manhattan, some purists feel the preparation might not be traditional. However, this is a subjective critique, and the bar's general reputation for great cocktails and a superb wine list remains a major highlight. The menu of small plates, which includes a variety of upscale options from oysters and caviar to more comforting choices like grilled cheese and shrimp quesadillas, also receives positive attention, making it a place where you can enjoy a full evening of drinks and light fare.
Bar Centrale is situated on W 46th Street between 8th and 9th Avenues, a stretch famously known as Restaurant Row. Its location in the Theater District makes it an exceptionally convenient spot for theater-goers. The bar is a short walk from numerous Broadway venues, and it’s easily accessible via multiple subway lines at the Times Square-42nd Street and Port Authority Bus Terminal stations. Its entrance is described as being "hidden," located up the stairs of a brownstone between two well-known restaurants, Joe Allen and Orso, which adds to its exclusive, "in-the-know" appeal. While the bar does not have a publicly available accessibility statement regarding physical features beyond general amenities, its presence in a bustling urban area with well-maintained sidewalks and proximity to major transit centers means it is generally accessible for most visitors.
Bar Centrale offers several services designed to provide a premium dining and drinking experience.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1we had two good times in this bar last week. the atmosphere is warm and cozy. the boss is very welcoming. The first night we sat at the bar, and had a great time. special mention for the bartender who is extremely friendly, and who served us very good cocktails. we came back just for him the next day, and we once again had a very pleasant time. so thank you from two French people who enjoyed discovering this hidden and soothing place in a neighborhood with an effervescent atmosphere
March 26 · Chloé CaronI've been here twice. The ambience is perfect. There is a no standing policy at the bar so it never feels crowded. The noise level makes conversation easy. The bartender had just the right amount of small talk for me both times I went. I haven't tried the food but it looks great.I am writing this review because the bar gives big speakeasy vibes and they do not seem to know how to make basic cocktails. They have a list of classic cocktails available! Aviation is on there, Sidecar, Sazerac. If you have these listed on your menu I'm going to assume you can make them. The first time I visited was 15 years ago, I ordered a Manhattan. The bartender shook it like it was a Daiquiri. I was disappointed. I didn't come back for 15 years and then last night I wanted a quiet classy spot to have a night cap and read a book. I order a Sazerac, bartender shakes the hell out of it. *sigh*If you want real cocktails head to Dutch Fred's or The Rum House.
August 14 · Colin MaxwellStopped in for drinks before a show. Very easy walk to most theaters. Place is very nice inside. Decor is tasteful, not flashy. Small bar area and booths. A few tables.Entrance is unmarked. Just walk up the steps and enter.Martini/Manhattan style drinks were served with a carafe on ice and a second small glass. See picture. Cool! We didn’t eat there so can’t comment. Friendly service. Prices are not too high. Usual bar prices, $16-$18 or so for cocktails.
September 23 · Al BunshaftOverpriced for the most basic cocktails. Worst espresso martini I ever had. Better off at a dive bar near by!
September 18 · MubinStopped here after watching a show. Drinks were great! Food was delicious! Service always spectacular
