★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Café Gitane in SoHo is a charming spot that blends French and Moroccan flavors in a unique and cozy setting. It has that neighborhood feel, tucked away but very much a local favorite. The service is warm and attentive, which adds to the overall experience. We tried the Chicken Parmesan sandwich, which was excellent — flavorful, hearty, and well balanced. The hamburger was just okay, not bad but nothing particularly special compared to other options in the area. The atmosphere is quite lively and on the louder side, with the space itself being relatively small, so don’t expect a quiet or spacious dining experience. That said, it’s part of the charm: it feels authentic, bustling, and very local.Overall, Café Gitane is a great stop if you’re in SoHo and looking for a casual place with character, good service, and tasty food that mixes French bistro classics with Moroccan touches.
September 07 · Francisco Simón VergerHad a nice meal at Cafe Gitane. I tried the baked eggs with tomato, which had a pleasant, light taste and were really good. My friend ordered the couscous and enjoyed that as well. Overall, a positive experience!
April 20 · Panhathai PongtongOnce upon a time, Café Gitane epitomized a certain Parisian-inflected downtown charm—half-earnest, half-ironic—a kind of insouciant chic that made it feel like more than just a spot for avocado toast (before that became a punchline). But time is cruel to institutions that mistake their own mythology for immunity. The NoHo outpost, in particular, seems to have become a caricature of itself. What was once casual has curdled into careless. The waitstaff, perhaps lulled by the café’s reputation or simply disillusioned by its stagnation, now appear more interested in maintaining their own social ecosystem than in extending hospitality. Orders feel like interruptions. Requests are met with a sort of theatrical impatience. You almost want to apologize for your presence. And yet, hope flickers. The relocation of the original Jane Hotel location to Vinegar Hill suggests that somewhere, someone still cares. The vibe there recalls what Café Gitane used to be—sunlit, slightly scruffy, a touch of irreverence without indifference. It’s a reminder that atmosphere, when curated with intention rather than assumption, can still matter. But until that ethos is rekindled across the board, Café Gitane risks becoming a cautionary tale of New York dining: a place trading not on quality, but on a faded sense of cool
April 12 · Weekend PosteThe place is old style. Good tables and good atmosphereThe coffee isn’t the best but I think that the place and history makes it a place you wanna be and visit again. You can not bring your laptop here and that is so cool. The only downside is that you leave smelling like fried food and smoke.
February 20 · Nicolás PagliaroStumbled upon this place and had breakfast. Very cool old school restaurant. Service was great and most of our food was amazing. Baked feta was pungent in the best way. Hummus was light and tasty. Overall we loved what we had to eat only dish that wasn’t a hit was the meatballs and rice, it was very under seasoned. All else was great and we will definitely return.
